New Owner - Best and most critical mods?
Gary N. replied to jimtxas's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Gerbings heated jacket. Best accessory I ever bought. -
Hi Alex, I have a similar but older model that's only 35000 BTU in my 2 car garage and it does a great job. I think the unit you're looking at can be vented out the wall instead of up through the roof like mine. Plus this one is more compact and can be mounted higher off the floor. Does it have a standing pilot light or electronic ignition? Gary

OH yes! Leslie made those too, every Christmas. She put them on a big cookie sheet in the shape of a Christmas tree to bake. She decorated them with green and red cherries. It's no wonder I weighed 260 lbs.

Hey Tom, I'll have to take you up on that offer. So you never had meat pie EH? It's feel good comfort food. Especially on a cold winter night. Here's a recipe that sounds close to what we used. Except we used 10 lbs of ground pork, 10 lbs of ground beef and I can't remember how many lbs of potatoes. We had to use every large pot we owned and my job was to keep stirring until cooked so the ingredients wouldn't stick to the bottom of the pot. This usually took about 3 hours. http://new-brunswick.net/new-brunswick/recipes/recipe64.html

I'm home alone tonight so I looked in the freezer to see what was in there and I swear we could eat for a year without shopping. I found a few meat pies (Tourtière) that Leslie and I made so I put one in the oven. Boy did that hit the spot and bring back lots of memories too. When my mom died in 1995 Leslie took on the job of baking the meat pies every Christmas. Last year (2006) we made 30. A lot are given to family and friends but I still have a couple left. When they're gone they're gone but I will enjoy every bite and think of the time spent with Leslie stirring the pot while she made the pie shells. I need to look a little more and see if there's any fruit cake left in there...LOL. We made that every Christmas too. I have never had any as good as her's.

Just a quick note to let everyone know that I finally got released from the hospital today. I still have to go for therapy but at least I get to sleep at home every night now. Thanks again for all the prayers and good thoughts. Also for all the cards, phone calls and hospital visits. You folks are the best. Gary

Thanks Tom, It's good to be back, even if only on the weekends right now. I sure hate having to go back to the hospital on Sunday night. The better I'm feeling the longer the days get in there. They're getting me up to 3 hours of therapy a day and I have to say, it sure is tiring. It's amazing how weak you get from laying in a hospital bed for too long. I've lost a total of 80 lbs. in the last year (back to what I weighed in high school) so I'm glad I don't have to move all of that around during my work outs. When they put 5 lb. weights around my ankles it feels like 50. I was amazed at how heavy the pot of coffee was when I made some this morning. I don't recall having any trouble carrying it before. When I went down in the basement this morning to check things out I had no problem going down but coming back up, well lets just say it wasn't pretty. Getting stronger every day. I just can't wait to get back to where I was before. Gary

Hey Everyone, Jeff here again. A few people mentioned sending cards. You can send them to our home since we don't know how much longer he'll be in Akron. The address is 247 Rd 11, RR#2 Woodslee, ON., N0R1V0. Thanks for all the support. ~Jeff

Hey guys. This is Jeff, Gary's son, again. He's still in intensive care in the hospital. He's breathing on his own, talking, and started to eat today. He wanted me to put a message from him up here. "Life has changed during the last two weeks in ways that I thought it never would. I don't know if I'll ever ride again and I don't care. If I walk again I'll be happy. Thank you for all your heartfelt messages. Hopefully I'll do this myself in a few weeks, sitting in front of the fireplace at Christmas time if I can find someone to haul the wood. I'm not up for visitors. We'll let you know ASAP." Thanks again for all of your support. ~Jeff Nantais

Hi everybody. This is Gary's son Jeff again. I wanted to let you know that we have created a blog to post messages to our family. Thanks again for all of your thoughts. The website for the blog is http://memoryofleslie.blogspot.com/. ~Jeff

Thanks to everybody for their thoughts and prayers. This is Gary's son Jeff. I read about this thread in an article with the Windsor Star and thought I should check it out. I just wanted to thank everybody and give you an update. My dad is in intensive care. He's banged up pretty bad but everything important is still working. He's on a lot of drugs and sleeps most of the time. We haven't been able to have a conversation yet, and he won't be able to remember anything at this point anyway. As far as the accident itself goes, the girl did not actually run the stop sign. She stopped, saw the bike, but thought she saw the right turn signal on, as well as the modulating headlight. She turned left and my dad didn't have enough time to stop. She wasn't on a phone or drunk or anything like that. She just made a very terrible decision to make the turn. He is getting better and my family appreciates all of the support. ~Jeff Nantais

Hi Tom, We are just out for a week or two this time. We won't be flying south for the winter until after Christmas. Tell Debby we're thinking of her.
-
Well, we launched the shuttle again this morning and are currently camped in Berlin OH. I guess we'll explore Amish country for a couple of days before heading further south. We're hoping to get to the Roanoke Valley and see some fall colours and do some riding in the mountains.

Is there a lawyer in the house? Maybe Reinyrooster knows, he's a prosecutor. -

I installed risers now this....
Gary N. replied to Maritimer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I had the Genmar risers on my '03 for a short time and was able to get a little slack in the cables by snipping one or two zip ties behind the fairing. You may be able to gain a bit more slack by re-routing the cables too. Had to go with 2" over cables when I went to the Flanders G2 bars and I think that would have been the best fix for the risers as well. You have to split the throttle box on the handle bars to disconnect the top side of the cables and to get at the other end the tank has to come off and the junction box for the cruise control cable has to come apart. BEWARE, there's one of those "OH SH**T" springs in that box. If you can take it apart without the spring jumping out make sure you take a digital picture of it so you can remember how it goes together. If you just want to re-route the cables just take the top apart. It's easier then the bottom. -

Mike, These are definitely LEGAL in Ontario and I've got a print out of the law to prove it. I tried to find the link for you but I can't put my finger on it right now. To answer your question though, yes, I have been pulled over twice in the same small town, (local L.E.O.s)on the same day, ten minutes apart. I showed the copy of the law to the cops each time and they let me go. I've never had a problem with the O.P.P. or any others. -
Good luck with that. I called Yamaha Canada customer relations about the run around I'm getting trying to get my CB fixed (not from the dealer) and all they would do is pass the buck on to Clarion. I didn't buy a Clarion bike, I bought a Yamaha bike.

A bit of advice I was given about buying a new TV that sounded pretty smart is to go to the local TV repair shop and find out what they actually fix before you buy anything. They don't always work on every make. Most of the big box store do not handle any repairs at all so if you do have problems down the road it's nice to know that the model you have is one that you can actually get fixed. Also you may be able to find out what models have the least problems.

I had an old IHC 1 1/2 hp engine that looked very similar to that one but mine wasn't an actual "hit and miss". It was fun to watch and hear it run but after having it sit around for about 15 years I decided it should go to someone who would appreciate it and maybe show it off. I sold it to a fellow who belongs to a local gas and steam engine club and he hooked it up to run a small reciprocating wood saw. Now I get to go and see it work at their show every summer.

If You Have Not Done This, You Should Try It!

Great pics Tim. Leslie and I did part of the Skyline Drive about 30 years ago after a trip to Washington DC. I seem to recall a very slow speed limit (30 or 35 mph). We were using a '66 Chev pickup with a 9' slide in camper back then and owning a bike was only a dream. I'd sure like to make that trip again and do the Blue Ridge too. We're planning a fall trip in the next week or so and maybe we'll get over that way again. -
I'm looking for stock exhaust...cheap
Gary N. replied to juggler's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Nothing to it. Just drill out the rivets that hold the tips and baffles in. Pull the tip and baffle out. I had to use a sharp chisel to get the tips to start moving. It was a bit of a chore to get them apart the first time but not too bad. Wrap the packing around the baffle as many times as will fit back into the muffler. Use some masking tape or light wire to hold the packing on the baffle and reassemble. You can rivet everything back together or get some nice stainless screws. Most bike shops will have the exhaust packing available but maybe not for $10. I bought two rolls but ended up only using one. -

Let us know if it starts dripping oil from being over filled. Most have found that anything over 1/2 way between the two marks on the sight glass causes oil to get sucked into the breather and then out to the floor. Also, is that Lucas additive compatible with a wet clutch? -
Thanks Hal. I can almost smell the turkey cooking now. Have a good trip. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Here's what I used to repack my Bub's. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/20-x-38-MOTORCYCLE-EXHAUST-MUFFLER-PACKING-WRAP_W0QQitemZ140148216528QQihZ004QQcategoryZ35573QQcmdZViewItem It made a big difference, especially with the whine coming from the back seat. As for the bad looking aluminium tips, it's not hard to adapt some HD tips to the Bubs. I used their fishtail tip on mine.
