We made it from Tok to Dawson City over the Top of the World Hwy. yesterday. We lucked out. It was dry and real dusty but it rained last night and we just heard the the road got closed today. We were advised to not take it if it was wet. Almost 100 miles of gravel and the Alaska side from Chicken to the border is real rough. The Yukon side is much smoother and better with some paved sections but mostly gravel. I guess it was a beautiful drive but I was too busy watching the road to notice. Spent today doing touristy stuff in Dawson City. I am having a hard time down loading pictures here so I'll have to try again.

Wow, we've been busy. When we left Valdez we saw a mother grizzly and 3 cubs playing near the bay. Spent the long weekend in Anchorage. Quite the urban village in the vast Alaskan wilderness I must say. A very viberant and busy downtown area. Had a couple of real nice sea food dinners and even tried a reindeer hot dog. Went to the ULU factory even though I had never heard of an ULU. Thanks Condor. On July 4th we road out to Whittier and went through a 2 1/2 mile railroad tunnel. Monday we headed for Fairbanks. Almost ran out of gas heading up the Park Hwy. The RSV took 5.7 gallons when we finally got to a station. We took an all day guided tour up to the arctic circle on Wednesday and Thursday just toured around town on the bike. Found a real nice '39 or '40 GMC cab over engine truck with factory 4WD. I sure wish it wasn't so far away or I'd be trying to buy it. Not a speck of rust or a dent anywhere. We took a ride out on the Chena Hot Springs road and saw 13 moose. Two crossed in front of us within about 100 feet. Yesterday we down to Tok and today we are heading for Chicken and the Top of the World Hwy. Over 20 hours of day light up here now and it really messes with your head. Between that and the four hour time difference, eating at odd times, sleeping when we're tired and all the sight seeing.....MAN we're having fun.

You're welcome "Son". Always willing to help a fellow member spend their money. But in this case I think it would be money well spent. I've had trailer brakes fail in a panic situation and it's not fun. The stock brakes on the RSV leave a lot to be desired, just stopping the bike without a trailer. Let me know if you need any more advice. For you it's free.

Good for you Brad and Rhonda. Good idea on the trailer brake upgrade too. Princess Auto sells a surge brake coupler that should do it.

Don, I'd be interested in the antenna if someone else buys the Zumo but doesn't want the XM antenna.

Well thanks for that offer Dan. We have already met the Alaska State bird so we have decided to stay at the Howard Johnsons.

Yesterday we left Beaver Creek Yukon and continued on the Alaska hwy. north. The rain stopped during the night so we left early to try and get through the constuction before the traffic picked up. It wasn't too bad until just after the US border inspection station. From there we had to follow a pilot car through about ten miles of snot. We had one close call but we made it. Sorry no pics of this area. Mary was too busy holding on. From there to Tok it wasn't too bad. Just some more frost heaves and a few spots of broken pavement. We turned south on the Richardson hwy. to Valdez where we stayed last night and tonight. The Richardson is the first hwy. built to reach the interior of Alaska and it goes through some of the nicest country I've ever seen. Canyons, glaciers, waterfalls. Here are a few pics from yesterday. Some show how the frost heaves the road. Tomorrow we're off to Anchorage.

Dave, this one is just for you buddy.

We took the ferry from Juneau to Haines last Friday and spent two nights there. Yesterday we headed out on the Haines Hwy to Haines Junction. What a beautiful ride. At 3400 feet we were above the snow line and driving in the clouds. We made it as far as Burwash landing where we found the "Possum Lodge". It was clean and cheap (for up here) and the only place around. Today we headed north for the Alaskan border and we had heard the road was bad and to not go too fast but I wasn't ready for what we got into. The perma frost heaves the road and leaves pot holes the size of Smart Cars. The first few miles wasn't too bad but then it started to rain and I couldn't see too dodge the holes and woop dee doos so we stopped in Beaver Creek to wait for the rain to stop. Talking to a couple who came south and they didn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about the next 30 or so miles. Road contruction and rain has turned that section to soup. He said he almost lost it three times. He was pulling a trailer and thought it may have added to the problem. His mufflers were working like pontoons. Wish me luck.

They say it rains 2/3's of the time in Juneau. I think they are right. Went to visit the touristy down town area the other night. NOTICE....if your S.O., wife, or girl friend likes bling..... don't go there. Every other store is selling jewelery. And talk about high pressure. Mary found rings in three stores that she "loved and just had to have".... Yes dear, but there are several more stores to look at and you might find one you love better. After about the fifth store and listening to all the pitches I think they finally wore her down. But we haven't left town yet. We are staying out by the airport and it was raining pretty hard the other day so I went for a walk and found the coolest hardware store I've ever been in. They had everything from jack hammers to 12' (foot) X 1 1/8" all thread rod. I found some real nice fingerless, deerskin leather gloves (made in USA) for $7.00. Yesterday we went for the Tracy Arm Fjord glacier tour. WOW, is all I can say about that. It was cloudy when we got there but it did stop raining for a couple of hours. We saw lots of seals and quite a few whales on the way back. I've also discovered that they make pretty good beer here. I really like the Alaskan Amber. We're moving on the Haines this afternoon for a couple of days. I've included a few pics of the glacier tour from yesterday.

How do I get my riding lights on?
Gary N. replied to Sandbagger's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Also, check the in-line fuse to the passing lights located behind the fairing. -
You might just get your wish Dave. Made it to Juneau this morning and it was raining and they are calling for rain for the next several days. We had a nice relaxing ride on the ferry. Watched the sun set on the top deck last night around 10:30. It was still light enough to see at 11:30.

Well, while everyone was busy maintaining their bikes and having a good time yesterday, we were busy flying over the Rockies and hiking in the rain forest.

We're in Kitimat BC tonight. I remembered learning something about this place in elementary school. Maybe it was the funny sounding name that made the info stick with me but I recalled that smelting aluminium was a big deal here so thought I would come and check it out. So far I've learned that they have lots of electric power due to a damn they built somewhere near here and they need lots of power to make aluminium. They also have a beautiful deep water port to ship it out. Pulp and paper mill that was here has closed.

Trust no one, front axle.
Gary N. replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I think somebody is trying to cover their a$$. Sounds to me like they tried to get the axle out without loosening the pinch bolt first. You don't need a whole lot of grease on the axle. Maybe just a little to help it slide into the bearing races but that's about it. Nothing turns on that axle. I wouldn't be changing out the bearings unless they got damaged somehow when they tried to pull the axle. Just turn them with your finger with the wheel off and if you don't feel any roughness they should be fine. -
Made it to my friends place near Edmonton last Saturday. He is the fellow who bought my '46 Chevy truck two years ago. All I can say is, it went to a real good home. This guy has over seventy, (70) finished street rods and antiques. I couldn't believe my eyes. Word can't describe his property, house and garages. I'm not using my regular lap top but I'll try and post some pics. It was nice to see my old truck again and he even let me take it for a ride. Here's a link to his web site for some pics of his collection http://streis-streetrods.com/ We left there Sunday morning and headed west on the bike. As we entered Jasper National Park we were greated by a young moose standing guard just inside of the park. We also saw some mountain goats and sheep. We stayed in Jasper last night and headed out this morning and saw three elk along the way to Prince George where we are tonight. The weather was been pretty good so far. Started warm and sunny yesterday but got cloudy and cool last night. Had a couple of rain drop over night but this morning it was partly cloudy when we left and about 50*. It didn't warm up much today. Only about 60*. We drove through about 14 rain drops all day but when we were three miles from the hotel it started coming down pretty good and it started to hail. Man them little buggers hurt when they hit your face. It only lasted for a couple of minutes and it was all over. Not much go'n on here so we are going to continue west tomorrow. Looks like we'll be ahead of schedule so we'll get a chance to explore a bit before we get on the ferry Sunday.

Well, our "Bucket List" trip to Alaska has begun. Got a late start this morning and got held up at the US boarder again by the fruit and vegetable police. Had to detour around some street flooding in Dearborn and we really got tied up in some heavy and slooooow traffic in Chicago. Finally made it into Wisconsin where we stopped for tonight. Our plan is to leave the Space Shuttle at a friend's place near Edmonton Alberta this weekend and then head out on the bike for Prince Rupert BC where we catch a ferry for Juneau Ak on 6/20. After that we have no set plans and will just go with the flow. Will update when ever I can get a conection.

I don't know what the law is but for the National Street Rod Association safety inspection, Nothing on the chassis can hang below a line drawn from the bottom edge of a wheel rim to the opposite side wheel rim. The idea is that if you get a flat tire nothing on the chassis will drag the ground.

Hey Tom, I've got a Honda power washer so when you get your new bike dirty bring it on up here and I'll show you how it works.

Kreg, just curious. What do you use that old Case for? I have a couple of old tractors. A '52 Harry Ferguson 2085 and a '53 Massey Harris 33. Neither has live PTO but both have 3 point hitch. Only use I have is for pulling out bushes or pushing snow. So they are mostly just barn ornaments.

Me too. I've had six or seven sets of D404 WWWs and consistently get 12000 to 14000 miles. Only had cupping on the front one of the OEM set on my Road Star.
