  1. Glad you didn't damage the engine. I hate those cheap plastic oil lines that come with those gauge sets. Braided stainless steel line is the only safe way to go in that hot environment. Or switch to an electric sending unit and gauge. At least if you burn a wire off you won't wreck the engine.
  2. On my second unit. Started having trouble with the first one and replacing parts and the last time I had a problem the service guy said "well, the life expectancy is only about fifteen years". I was ready to pull it out and put a gas furnace in but with the government incentives I was able to put another, newer and better geo unit it for only a bit more than a gas unit so I did. Hope I'm out of here before this one starts to cost $$$$. But I really do like the way they work when they're working.
  3. A longer spring or a shim behind it should work. Ball could be worn a bit too.
  4. I have no experience replacing the clutch spring on the RSV but I did a Barnett conversion on my Road Star. Everyone recommended replacing all of the original bolts due to them being very soft. It's been a while but I think stainless steel bolts were recommended and that's what I got. Just an FYI.
  5. Well, I tried. But I can't seem to get both maps to stay for some reason. Still have to add South Dakota too. If I counted all the States I've towed the bike through I'd just about have them all, but that wouldn't count would it.
  6. Home Sweet Home Now I get to clean the Shuttle, the bike, the trailer, change oil in everything, replace burnt out headlight, cut the lawn, trim the hedges, pull the weeds, sort through my mail, and pay bills. It was a great trip.
  7. Well this adventure is all but over. Just have to pick up a few groceries this morning and we should be home sweet home this afternoon. Other than Mary's one week stay in the hotel Red Deer it's been awsome. Can't even complain about the weather. Only had two or three days of rain and nothing we couldn't ride in. The trip was amazing.
  8. I left from home on the sixth of June and I'm still not back. Wouldn't even think about doing this trip in three weeks but then I don't have a job to worry about. We spent a month in Alaska once we got there and really didn't do it justice.
  9. Had a great ride today. Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Needles hwy. and Crazy Horse monument. They sure have some great bike roads here. Mary did very well. It was her first good ride since she was sick. We were only out for about five hours because it was very hot. The thermometer on the bike was right at 100*. Cycle therapy must really work. Back in the Shuttle headed east tomorrow.
  10. The fellow who lost his wallet returned my call while I was out of cell range so I called him back this morning and he was very thankful. The police contacted him and are returning is wallet.
  11. Is that true Brad? ..... You're as old as Don? .... Never would have guessed that. I thought you had a couple of years on him. Wouldn't have thought of doing anything but trying to get it back to him. I had a hard time sleeping just knowing I had it.
  12. The journey continues. We left Red Deer Alberta Saturday morning and today we are at Mt. Rushmore. We stayed at Devils Tower last night and drove up on the bike and had a up close look this morning. Mary wasn't up to the hike around the base. This is the middle of bike week (Sturgis) so the campgrounds are all full and the roads are too. Never seen so many bikes. Hope to do a little riding around tomorrow but probably won't get too close to Sturgis.
  13. Thanks for the advice Carl. Heaven knows I'm already in their computer for trying to smuggle a wedge of lemon into the country. I get the third degree every time I cross the border now. Sure don't want to give the fruit and vegetable cops any more ammunition.
  14. Done. And happy to be rid of it. Hope the guy gets it back and pays it forward some how.
  15. We stopped in Sheridan Wy to do a little shopping and pick up some groceries and gas for the space shuttle. I was just coming up to the intersection to get back on the I-90 and a guy pulls out of gas station with a boat on a trailer and lucky for him it was me he cut off. Just as he pulled out I put my foot on the brakes and I see something fall from his vehicle. It was his wallet, full of cash, credit cards and ID. I stopped right on top of it and Mary went out and gathered up as much as she could without getting run over. She is sure she didn't get all the cash. By now the guy is booting it up the on ramp and way out ahead. No chance to catch him with the shuttle, even with the Ultra Power upgrade. So what should I do? By the time I got on the hwy. he was out of sight. I pulled over at the first opportunity and went thought the wallet looking for a phone number and all I found was a personal check with a phone number but the last two digits couldn't be read. There was a business card for a county parole officer (don't jump to conclusions) so I called the number but the women didn't work there any more. The guy I talked to did some digging and came up with a cell number. I tried it, no answer, but the recorded message was by the guy so I left a message with my cell number. Haven't heard anything yet but we're at Devils Tower tonight and there's no cell reception. If I don't hear anything tomorrow I guess I'll just pack it all in an envelope and ship it back to him. My dilemma is that I have no idea how much money might have blown away and I don't want him thinking I stoled it. We found one, hundred dollar bill but who knows how many there were? I was in the middle of the road holding up traffic and wasn't too worried about a few that got away.
  16. Mary got out of the hospital yesterday evening and is feeling and looking better all the time. Going to let her rest up for a couple of days at least before we head out again.
  17. Mary is looking and feeling much better today. The doc said she could start eating some soft foods (no more gourmet Jello ) so they gave her some nice fish for dinner tonight and she enjoyed it very much. Should get some lab tests back tomorrow and hoping to get out by mid week. I've moved the space shuttle closer today so it's only a couple of miles to the hospital. I can get on the internet at a local grocery store on the way home.
  18. Well our trip has come to a screaching hault. We're at Mary's brother's place in Red Deer Alberta or at least I am. Mary became very ill a week ago when we got here and Thursday I took her to emergency and she was admitted. Found out today that she has a severe bowel infection. Doc figures it was probably something she ate. She's on IV fluids and drugs and will have to stay there until the infection gets cured which might be up to a week. She was starting to feel a little better this afternoon. She never had a chance to visit her brother so we'll probably hang around for a few days once she gets out. I want to be sure she will be up to the trip home.
  19. Thanks Don. Sure wish I would have waited a few months to buy my Zumo. Oh well, win some and loss some. Glad I had it on this trip.
  20. Well Bob, that was an unproven rummer started by someone on this site, who does not like modulators by the way. Yes the girl said I had my signal on, which I didn't. She was a 16 year old inexperienced driver, making a left turn at a T intersection at rush hour. Yes, she may have confused my modulating headlight for a turn signal, but I doubt it. I find it hard to believe how anyone could confuse a modulating headlight for a turn signal. There's nothing I can say here that will change the outcome of this debate and we'll never know whether not having one on my bike that day would have changed anything. I don't think so, and I continue to use one.
  21. Well, we made it back to the Space Shuttle parked in Edmonton. What an adventure we have had. The last couple of days we saw lots of wildlife between Watson Lake and Fort Nelson. Lots of beautiful country too. We'll stay here a couple of days in order to visit some relatives and catch our breath before we start heading home. We may meet some friends at Sturgis on the way. The bike looks like crap but I'll fix that. The headlight cover I installed did it's job. I noticed a crack in it, right in the centre. I know exactly when it happened too. Over 4500 miles and so many memories I can't count them.
  22. VR Member Gary Brown, "Black Ice" is in Penticton BC. I know Gary would help if he can.
  23. The Show Chrome short, wide shields are under $100 and you shouldn't have any problem getting one before the end of the month. I don't remember where I bought mine but it was $89 for the tinted one. JC Whitney used to have them in their catalog too. Maybe Ebay.
  24. Still in Whitehorse. Yesterday we took a bus/train ride to Skagway on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad. This is a narrow gauge RR built in 1900 to help get the gold miners over the mountains and into the Klondike. It was also used during the war to help supply the building of the Alcan hwy.
  25. Good ride today 300 miles down the Klondike Hwy. to Whitehorse. Good road except for a few sections under construction. The last construction zone was the worse due to the water truck just making a pass ahead of us. Avon tires suck in mud. I kept it upright but just barely. Swifty, you would be real happy to see my bike right now. I got to find a car wash first thing in the morning.
