  1. So I was naive enough to think that plugging in the new relays and rewiring my bad connector for the headlamp might resolve my shorting of the 15 amp ignition fuse. Silly me. I'm going to redo the connections that I made using crimp connectors when I replaced my fuse box fuses with soldered connections. I practiced soldering wire ends together so I'm better at it now. Maybe those are causing an issue. I know my mechanic kind of poo pooed my repair for using those connectors. So anyway that's where I'll start before I tear into kill switches and other things. That 15 amp fuse controls the tach the digital information center my neutral switch and who knows what else. I'm glad I don't have the class system or cruise control even if my wiring chart does. So there's my little update. Today I get my new clutch slave to replace. You know that was one of the first things that I ever talked about having to get fixed on that bike and the shop didn't do it for some reason. I'm happy to tackle it myself now, but wonder why why it wasn't done when we talked about it 5 times

  3. I haven't had my bike very long, but since I picked it up I've wanted to put a better audio system in. Just checking in to see what everyone's using and looking for a little guidance. I definitely want to replace the amp/speakers/ cassette/radio setup, have people gutted the cassette/radio put a smaller bluetooth receiver/radio in with room for phone storage (or amp storage instead if needed)? I'm gonna go ahead and guess nothing's really plug and play that I could buy and stick in.
Bluetooth from my phone with Tone's headset. It's easy to control the Bluetooth from the tones controls laying on your shoulders. I haven't figured out how to be able to use it to make calls yet because of the noise but for listening pleasure it's hard to beat.

  4. Might as well wipe it off and paint it with hi temp black. It'll make your bike faster :rotfl:

    Good luck.

I'm waiting for the next post that says: While you're in there, you might as well ............

Something tells me the guys are going to want to be around to see the night that we finally meet!

  5. So I've been kicking around the idea of maybe adding a second Gen to my Garage. I love my 83, but it's an 83, and Before I start throwing $$$ to make it inter-state safe (all rubber, hoses, etc etc updated), I've been thinking of just adding a newer bike. I absolutely love my feet under 83, and adjusting to feet forward would definitely be a challenge.

With that said, a couple questions on RSV vs RSTD.

Do you guys feel much of a difference in wind between the fairing and the RSTD windshield?? I tend to like the RSTD look, but also like a fairing, and I really like my 83 fixed fairing.

Also I recently read that the whine, went away in 09 ??

    Opinions?

Anyone that has ridden all three, I'd love to hear your pros / cons. I'm a big guy, 6'2", 275, so I like the height of my 83.

    Thanks

Any thought of selling the 83?

  6. That will make it leak a little. First thing I would change.
Yeah I had some oil when I pulled the cover off. But what's dripping out of the thing as hydraulic and it's running down the back side of that case from where the push rod goes through. The wiring up front is pretty oily though. We did upgrade the cooler on the stator so I wonder if that might be coming out where those wires go in. Also is that drill hole normal?0a83ac16ed4247169d33bbfd9bf1ffa4.jpg9b573c0001fac16aafdc0eddc61537f9.jpg0a3c1681a9352543053a7e521e0d6f5a.jpgf9d79cdb0dcb170587661cb153c5e22d.jpg

  7. Yup! The difference is the angle of the slots! I think the JIS has a bigger angle and that is why the SAE rounds out the head...
A friend on here explained to me that the JIS are square-cut inside curve between the teeth versus an American metric which is rounded on the inside of the teeth. And the angles are different. I've still been trying to find some on the Shelf locally. I need to just order some I guess.

  8. I have a daughter at Purdue, graduates in May, offered a job at Hormel Foods in Fremont, she is moving to the west outskirts of Omaha. I'm going with her in March to canvas the area and apartment hunt, along with a plant tour. I keep hearing great stories of the area. With you not far, I'll have to trailer my Bike once she settles, and we'll go riding. That way if my 83 breaks down, you'll have parts :happy34:
At the worst, we could get one bike running out of the two and take turns riding! Fremont's actually a pretty nice town. 15-20 minutes from Omaha. It isn't Papillion though.

  9. You'll again need to remove the slave,,, well now that was a statement you didn't expect I bet,,, yep, remove the slave and then remove the push rod. NOW, in behind the push rod is a ball bearing, it may come out and may not, but there is one there, so watch for it, without it you will be clutchless. Now is a good time to have a long handled needle nose pliers and a new seal. The old seal will come out, so you can drill a small hole in the metal part, one on either side of the seal and then insert a screw into the hole. You now have something to grab onto to work the seal out with those long handled needle nose pliers. Once it's out insert the new seal using a proper sized socket and an extension. Take your time, enjoy the work, put the push rod back in with the dimpled end going in first and then reinstall the rest of the components.
Does the oil level need to be lowered or drained for this?

  10. I ain't ready for that next stage yet.......:Avatars_Gee_George::Avatars_Gee_George::innocent-emoticon:
I had kept my youngest son's address at his mom's house on my bulletin board for 8 years. Cleaned up the bulletin board one day and decided what I don't need that anymore he's off to college. Threw it out. One little piece of paper gone! Not three days later my sister-in-law called wanting Mason address to send something to make sure he'd get it!

The other item was a thing for work. Thinking I don't need to move this thing around all the time anymore after 10 years, I threw it away. 2 weeks later I had to buy a new one because I needed the exact thing I had thrown away.

  11. (sorry if this offends anyone but....)

If I can't take most of my stuff with me I'm not going ! Wherever I may end up !

That's interesting. Two such varying perspectives. And I'm not claiming either is better than the other, but there just isn't any Thing in this life that I wouldn't shuck today. The souls that I might stay for (having made decisions of they're own) will be there anyway, eventually, so that's no biggie. Don't take this as a death wish it's just I'll happily leave it behind, I got nothing left to prove.

But don't get me wrong, no matter how long I get to/have to be here, there's a whole lot of stuff ain't nobody taking from me!

  12. You know, I kind of wonder about this 'eternity' thing. What if you could take it with you? Does God have unlimited storage space or do we really need to have a pyramid built on earth in our honor to stash everything?

How many motorcycles would fit in Pharoh Ramses pyramid?

Somehow I think that once we move to that Eternal life, we will be so overwhelmed by the presence of the One True God and His Son, is that none of the junk we think is so important now will even be missed. Prepare to be astounded by pure love, pure Justice, pure Truth, forever.

  13. As a newlywed I carried a a picture of my beautiful wife with me in case I was ever tempted. When I got older, I took a picture of all my s*** and carried half of it with me in case I was tempted.

  14. I wonder if you could retrofit a radiator from a 2nd Gen on there
I've got a line on a good radiator. Sometimes I just get crabby. Been cleaning my office all afternoon evening. Little dog's looking at me like that's enough. I hate when accreditation time rolls around. Operating a home health care business isn't as easy as it used to be. The good thing is, the rules are spelled out, and all you have to do is comply to the standard of the rule. No points for being over and above, just penalties for not meeting the standard. You've probably all had prostate exam by now... with the benefit of lube.... all so I can get reimbursed 25% of what we used to get paid 20 years ago.

Ah crap, I'm whining again. Buddy's right, it's time to go home.

  15. If you can not find someone local to repair it cheap, IF it is just a pinhole, you may be able to solder it yourself. But you do have to get the special solder and flux for aluminum. I would at least try to do my own repair before spending for a replacement that is of unknown history and condition. The worst you can do is to mess it up and have the buy the one you were gonna buy anyhow. You can practics soldering thin aluminum on some soda or beer cans.

Google "aluminum solder" there are a lot of how to's.

    Same old story...

You could save a lot of money by doing the work yourself. All you have to do is buy $179 soldering setup. That you're going to use three more times. Ever

  16. My 83 called to me for about three months before I rescued her from the P.O.. He was a neighbor that wasn't tall enough for it. He dropped it on it's side in the yard one day and left it like that beside house for a year and a half. Finally he got her picked up and moved it next to his shed, which then made it visible to me for the first time. One stormy day the tarp blew off and for a few month I'd see her sitting there every time I looked out my kitchen window while doing dishes. At first she just smiled shyly, flipped her hair a couple times to let me know she was interested and then one day, she tired of my not picking up her signals, lured me down the hill to get a closer look at her. When I finally laid my hands on her, a shudder shot threw us both! Sort of like a shelter dog who's facing the gas chamber, I rescued her! We've been frustrating and loving each other for a year now.

Without the folks on this site, I might have tossed her out, but these guys are awesome with tips and videos and parts and experience! They've even inspired and coached me into doing the work myself which has been very rewarding.

You're starting out in a much better place and I wouldn't be afraid to jump in on that 2nd gen.

Me and "Farm Truck" had a rough first year while chasing down her issues and nursing her back to health, but the entire time we've been sharing our dreams and visions for life together on the road. Spring's coming and we're both getting a Little giddy about what it will bring.

    Good luck.

  18. Have you determined where the pinhole is?

Is it the tank, middle of cooling fins, where the fins meet tank, fill neck, ? Etc Etc

This will play into whether it's easily repairable or not, lol

This is all I know for now.

The picture of the top left corner where the fill tube is is spillage from the Overflow having been broken off. I've repaired it three times. It tends to come back from my mechanic with it broken off.

The top right corner is the leak I'm concerned with and I haven't gotten close enough to be able to tell where it is exactly. from4ce2d60fa3903611e67a4fff6e54fd45.jpgb99a0083b526f1cd7a9264a82b4eb8b1.jpgdd61b43661be88b23fc5370970ffe4ed.jpg

  19. Why in the world would a motorcycle need a robot driver or why would a robot have any interest in a motorcycle at all? That's just too weird for me to even contemplate. Does it have a cooler in its torso that you can get into while riding behind it? Then I might let someone drive me
