  1. The idea is to be able to make/take phone calls thru the helmet sets plugged into the bike. Right now the only way I know to do that is with a Garmin and a splitter cable. With having kids and running a business I can't take off for days without being reachable all the time. I have a hardwired Bluetooth receiver in it for music.
My bikes too loud for talking on a telephone, even in my full coverage helmet. I'm old, kids grown, I don't need to talk on the phone until I want to talk on the phone. Plus having voicemail to text from Verizon means if there's no message left I didn't need to pick it up. Never was a slave to this thing except when on call for work. 24 hours a day 7 days a week for 23 years. Course in the old days it was a tape recorder to the phone, then there was the pagers that just gave you a phone number, then a pager that would allow up to 126 characters. My first cell phone was in a bag with handset like the old home phones. But, if I'm calling someone I expect them to pick up by the second ring! Hahaha!

For a second there I was :dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool::dancefool: right along with you Ty!!!!!! RATSssssss

Dont give up though,, you are DEFINITELY on the right path!!

Yeah I read my closing quote on one of these post and reminded myself that eventually Job was blessed for his faithfulness. (Old Testiment Job for those who may not get the reference)

  3. So my family doc advised me a couple days ago to get plenty of sleep, take my drugs and to keep my head down and give my immune system time to catch up. Staying out of the cold, away from adults with colds and runny nose kids ain't that difficult when ya sleep as much as I have been doing BUT = a lop eared 1/2%er VR MOTORCYCLE club member varmint's gotta have some kind of fun - right??

WOWZY WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So light and nimble right off the kick stand (like standing there nockin a MX bike between your knees - DOUBLE WOWZY WOW WOW WOW) that I almost tossed it over onto its right side when I stood it up = had not it been captured between my knees I just may have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :scared: My gosh what an amazing piece of game changing world class RnD.. I used to go to the big rally out in Sturgis just to hang out all night with the builders and always got :178: over ground up builds.. This was right out or front door, good night,, is it a genuine work of motorcycling art.. Truly,, IMHO, if your any type of a bike gearhead or into custom builds at all and havent taken a moment to stop and admire the new Wing you really should do so!! To all you folks at Honda = :clap2::clap2::clap2::clap2:[emoji106]

I would love to see you pack that sucker up! There goes all those gorgeous lines! Where in the world is the trunk?

  4. I picked up this Bluetooth adapter for a buck and a half or so on a website called wish. I plug my favorite no microphone headphones into the Bluetooth adapter for music while I can do anything else I want with my phone. But I'm not trying to hook to a GPS system on my 83.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180328/a66e2b2ea1c001cf7bc32d99de7ca9ed.jpg

The Bluetooth adapter will play music for about 2 and 1/2 hours per charge. I bought three of them and they recharge in about 25 minutes

  5. I have an electronics guru friend working on a new Bluetooth set that may possibly let us link the phone in without using a GPS. The idea is start with a Bluetooth adapter like those that plug into a car stereo with a remote mic. In my simple mind I'd think a plug could be connected in place of the mic so the Buddy Rich cable could connect there. Sounds simple to me but I know squat about electronics. Has anyone here tried it? Would there be enough interest in it for him to produce them? If the test works we are looking to make it able to be hard wired inside the fairing with no batteries to deal with.

I like the idea of getting rid of the GPS and cleaning up the bars. I use my phone app anyway and only have the Garmin for the phone interface.

  6. I would say forget the ride tomorrow and get a new fuse panel installed, checking all the wires as you do it. one of our members sells a kit to replace the fuse block with a modern blade type fuse, http://www.venturerider.org/forum/photopost/showproduct.php?product=59&title=first-gen-vr-fuse-box-upgrade-kit&cat=17 . A lot of us here have upgraded as over time the spring clips for the glass tube fuses will break or crack and not give you a positive connection.

Taking you time now will save you time in the long run and trouble when out on the road.

    Rick F.

First thing I did when I bought it was to replace it. I'm going home. Tonight I repaired those melted wires and put the dash back in. I plugged everything in, turned the key, blew the fuse. Sent a few choice expletives in the air, thrashed my arms wildly because I don't throw things anymore , stamped my feet a few times, and now I'm leaving. This silly thing has frustrated me at every turn. I will crate it up. Who wants it? 3778c0177f657eb794ca7d8d3b411c07.jpg

  7. All of the things you have wrong all share two things in common, they are all powered by the signal fuse and they all have the same ground.

Do you have a good fuse in the signal position?

Do you still have the test light in the signal fuse position? All of that stuff will not work with the test bulb in place.

Do you have both ground wires connected to the battery?

That was with the light in place. 30 seconds before that I tried another fuse and it blew as soon as I turn the key passed accessory.

My office neighbor just opened his transmission shop and he checked all my ground from battery and said I was fine. He hasn't had any time to help me for 2 weeks. I hate to ask him as he's busy getting his business going and staying quite busy by the way. He mentioned three or four times while we were going through it how much he was impressed with the electrical wiring drawings that we have for that 83. He couldn't remember seeing any of that were as easy to follow and use and complete

  8. Here is a website out of New Zealand that has a lot of information on the 1st Gen Ventures. Even though it is in New Zealand Venture were not that much different from ours and the information works for us also.

They also have a copy of the service manual and owner manuals that you can down load for your use.

    The link is https://www.yamahaventure.nl/xvz-1300.html

    Hope this helps you out.

  9. Following Puc' s advice...

"Ty,, I've been down for long enough now that this simple little suggestion has probably already been made and I missed out on seeing it but,, maybe not so I will toss it out here.. If you are talking about popping a fuse (proving you have a short to ground somewhere) - if you pull the faulted fuse, then build a pig tail (or use a 12 volt test light but I like doing what I am telling you with the pig tail cause it stays in place better while I am fooling around with the harness) for the fuse panel where the fuse plugs in.. Simply use two male spade terminals crimped onto a piece of wire so you end up with one spade touching one fuse blade connector and another spade touching the other connector = basically ending up with a fuse with no fusable connector to blow - get it? Now attach a 12vdc light socket with light in it to that two wire pig tail = a tail light off an old bike works fine but so will anything holding like an 1157ish - dont use a headlight though as it will draw to much.. Now when you turn your key on, if that circuit is gone to ground the 12v light will light up as it has a source and its grounded somewhere = get it? If its not grounded and you were not blowing a fuse - the jumper wire your light is hooked to would only have a source - it would not be grounded. Now, with the key on and the light shining away, start unplugging devices associated with that circuit.. Everything is suspect.. You could looking at running light on bike having lost its element to ground internally = still working but shorted out.. Ya just keep fiddling till the light goes out.. Dont be afraid to move harnesses around some - sometimes just jiggling wires will cause the light to blink and instantly hook you up with the source.. Also dont forget to test the leads heading down to the stator - its not impossible for shorts to occur there...

Any of this make any sense?? Hope so!! If I one of the clubs actual electronics guru's now come on here and tell me I am nuts and correct my idea we will both gain [emoji23] so consider the "source" of your logic here too :hurts:"

Ok. Pigtail and an old tail light from a trailer is working fine. I have unplugged and replugged every connector coming from my Brown Line out of the signal fuse.NOTHING CHANGES, BLINKS OR CHANGES IN ANY WAY when things are unplugged!

Are the rear turn signals supposed to be on as running lights as well? They only turn on when the hazard lights are turned on. Also, no turn signals now. Moving the turn signal switch does nothing but the hazard switch and lights work when activated. Time to tear apart the the switch? What do I look for in there when I take it apart?

  10. Update 10.19.17 The unending hell...

So, now back to working on the bike. I cannot get those carbs our. I've got the stack off the manifolds, but managed to break the holder for one of the carb throttle cables. Yet another problem of the unending hell that doesn't stop.

My biggest issue is that I have no friends so I have no one to help. Gets so lonely working on this bike and I've still yet to even see if it runs.

I was talking 2 a guy that fixes bikes and he wants me to stop because he just fixed a V-max and no issues getting the pack off. I'm so pissed about this I've started to remove one side of the manifolds but of course that's a new hell since I've got the stack in the way.

I'm sorry to vent. I'm really being nice in this posting as I'm not adding all the f-bombs this bike so richly deserves. I'm just sick of yet more unending stuff that looks like I've got to remove to get a SIMPLE CARB PACK off an engine!!!!

Pic is of the part I broke. Can it be TIG welded?

Again, sorry for the venting. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171019/e9c74c992fafd31666fb3aa0fc7a97d7.jpg

I bet my 83 with electronic issues has had more f-bombs dropped on her than yours has! Thanks to this site and all the advice, I'm going to try to tackle it again today. Supposed to be mid 60's mid-week and thunderstorms are moving the winter gravel and sand off the roads today. Hoping that today is the day! I'm rested, focused and enthusiastic! I need to ride!

Thanks Puc! Gonna work on this today while it rains. I have an old trailer light that should work. Don't know how to get a spade for a mini fuse connected to the wires but hoping I can jam the pigtails into the fuse holder.

  12. Hi Tyler, I was reading through the thread and kept asking myself what in the world prompted you to restore this bike. The list of things you have had to deal with is significant. I realize finding a good condition 83 might not be easy but finding a well maintained 87 or later is reasonable.
I got excited by the 83 reputation for speed and comfort. P.O. did transmission rebuild, front tire, rebuilt fork. What P.O. didn't tell me was that she had played on her right side in the yard for a year and a half. He dropped it, turned it off and walked away. Thought she just needs a battery and carb rebuild. Now, for three weeks I've made no progress because of this dang short somewhere in the harness. All wires going through the triple horn to the dash and bars are fine.

  13. Good Evening! and Happy St Patrick's Day!

I haven't been around for a while and it's been an interesting couple of years here in Georgia. My wife has had several surgeries during the past few years that kept me busy looking after her, and then in December 2014 I had my first surgery ever. I fell in November and suffered a complete tear of my right supraspinatus tendon.

Doc said it was a bad tear and I had apparently had a partial tear for some time before the fall. She warned that it might not be repairable, but she was able to get it back together in surgery on December 14. Eight weeks in a sling, three months of physical therapy, three months more of extended therapy, and a little over a year later I've got about 75% of my range of motion and wondering whether I'll get any more.

The good news is within the 75% range of motion I have no pain and good strength! I have tried riding the dial sport bike last fall and was able to take some short rides before winter. It still bothers me to hold my arm out and steer the bike for long, but I'm hoping it will get better.

However, I've come to the conclusion that I don't feel safe on the Venture and I'm going to put it up for sale. Sadly, it's sat for over a year and it's going to need carb work before it will go on the street again. I'll probably drain the tank and put some fresh fuel in it to see if it will crank, but you all know what happens to a bike that's been sitting. I can't do the work myself, and last time I had it done at the dealer it was expensive.

I'm going to get some pictures and post it in the classifieds here first and will let it go to a Venturerider for a good deal either way. Thinking maybe someone with mechanical ability might want a project. It's a pretty nice '01 with low miles. If no one here wants it, I'll post it on the Atlanta Craigslist and let her find a new home there.

What do you think I should ask for it needing the carbs gone through?

    Thank You!

    James

Sorry to hear of your challenges. I hope you're both continuing in good health now. I'd ask, whatever you want, OBO. Price it where you can live with it and let her go and love the memories

  14. Something else you can try, is to take out the faulty fuse and hook a trouble light between the 2 posts of the fuse. Leave the fuse out. Now when you go to use the circuit the light should come on, so you can now fool with the wires while keeping an eye on the light. You'll know you hit the right spot when the light flashes or stays on.
I like this idea. So I just strip the plug off of any cheap-ass work light or maybe I should go China and make 2,000,0000 of them with mini fuse inserts that do the same thing? A mini fuse with a flashlight bulb on a string

  15. The 2 places I would look first would be in the triple tree and under or around the trunk rack.
Everything looks like new but dirty. The trunk rack and rear signal lights are removed. Those wires seem fine. The wires going into the dash test fine. Oh, and I have good ground back to the battery. Do I have to unwrap my harness?

Update. I've replaced the radiator. That main drain has a drip a week. Seems like a janky setup, IMHO. Replaced the clutch slave and that cover's no longer dripping. because I torqued to the wrong setting. 1 tech resource said 5.5 foot/pounds and the other said 7.2 foot pounds. Torqued just a whisper past 86 inch/pounds and hope that stops any drips.

I'm working on my 15 amp signal fuses blowing. I'm good from the handlebars down to the connection at the front, so it's not in the switches or the blinkers., I've got a short somewhere in the main harness I'm afraid. Chasing the green and brown wires. They also are shorted at the rear signal lights to.

If there's any electricians within the sound of my voice I'd sure love it if you'd drop by. ;-)

  17. Yamaha is the only place you will find a new one from unless someone has one on Ebay or somewhere that they purchased new and didnt use and is looking to sell it. You can find the rebuild pieces at Yamaha and I believe some of the aftermarket suppliers have them also.

No matter what you will need a new gasket for the cover as you have to remove it to access the slave cylinder.

  18. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea several years ago (maybe 10?). I got a cpap machine and went through half a dozen different masks and straps and other various medieval torture devices till I found a combination that worked relatively well and did not keep me awake more than the apnea did. Unfortunately, my insurance no longer covers the supplies so I have been sleeping without the cpap.

I have found that my weight has a huge impact on the apnea. When I drop down to 180lb or less, I don't snore and the apnea disappears. I'm about 220 right now and I snore a bit but I'm still sleeping OK.

I'm actively working on dropping another 20 lbs(at least) but It's very expensive to live on a very low carb diet, which is what it takes for me to keep the weight off. Forget about my love of craft beer and cheese doodles!

I haven't snored since my divorce 15 years ago. (That I know of...)
