I would like to put together a ride for next year for riders in and around southern PA. I have two teenaged kids that I will trust home alone for one night so this ride would be a two day with an overnight somewhere. Being new to the touring world, what do you consider to be a good ride? Do you like to just hop on the scoot and ride? Or, do you like touristy stops along the way? I was looking at a ride that would go from York, PA through Gettysburg, PA through Catoctin Mountain, MD to Harper's Ferry, WV to Luray, VA on Skyline Drive. Riding with no stops that's an easy 175 mile ride. With stops in Gettysburg and someplace like Charlestown, WV it could be a full day. What makes a good ride for you?

I used to travel extensively. When I would get back to my hotel room in the evening I would always throw my change on the desk. When I left, I would throw all the accumulated change in a compartment in my suitcase. The $3 or so that I would have at the end of the week of travel would get tossed into the change jar at home that would get emptied out a couple of times per year. Well, I had a consulting job in Toronto for over a year. I would end up coming home with $20 in change cause the loonies and twonies would all get tossed in with the regular change. On my last trip to the client in Toronto I brought all my Canadian currency with me so I could use it or exchange it. I had over $200 in "change" that I needed to convert. Now that you have had dollar coins for several years, do you prefer that to paper?

A couple of related stories... I was in Hammonton, NJ a few months ago. I stopped at a convenience store there and picked about $5 worth of various items. The clerk actually counted back my change! It has been years since anyone did that. I would guess many people would not be able to do that if they wanted to. Story two...many years ago my friends and I would hang out at Bob's Big Boy in Montrose, CA. They had a cashier who was not too bright and this was before computerized registers. We would end up with a tab of say, $18.42. We would hand her some random amount like $31.16 and then watch her try to figure it out. Always provided some entertainment!

And...stay off of the front brake at low speed! The front brake will take you down! Oh, and practice.

Dan - I shoulda let you take my 2nd Gen for a spin that day in Baltimore. Maybe you would've been converted!

Don - I want to say thank you for putting out the capital to buy these bells. I look forward to getting mine! I told the kids when they see something come in from you to hide it from me since it is supposed to be a surprise. One of 'em will give it to me for Christmas and I'll pretend I'm surprised. Thanks again!

I have been an XM subscriber for three years. Love it. Would never go back to terrestrial radio. There are SOME commercial channels. Most channels that I listen to are commercial free. The only channels I listen to with commmercials are CNN and one of the country channels my daughter likes. The MLB channels carry the home team broadcast so you hear the home team advertisers. If the increased revenue allows XM/Sirius to keep subscription rates down and I still have commercial free channels to choose from, I'm all for it.

My wife won't let me ride in the house.

I don't log into chat because usually I'm at work. I really shouldn't be logged into the site at all! I dropped in once just in time to see everyone say good night. Usually when I'm home I with wife and kids and not on the pooter. I'll drop in one of these days though.

I have gently laid my RSV down twice. First time, with wife on the back, I was coming out of a driveway. Driveway was banked to the right and I was turning left. Came to the top of the driveway, stopped and started to fall to the left. Put my foot down but the ground had eroded away, nothing to put my foot on. Bike went down. Wife went down. I was left standing. A couple of guys came over and helped get everyone and everything upright again. No damage at all. Second time I was backing into my little bike garage. Ground was a little muddy and she went over to the left. Saddlebag hit the side of the garage and put a little scratch in it. My kids had a good time watching me try to stand it up again by myself on that one. but hey! I got 'er up again!

I guess I owe $10.00 to the kitty. I dropped her once on each side. Fortunately both times were at a complete stop. I have a scratch on my left saddle bag. My kids enjoyed watching me try to get 'er back up the second time! $10.00 coming your way Don.

Yeah, I'm in York County PA - home of the largest HD plant. This county knows some things about jobs leaving the area. Pfaltzgraff went to China, York International went somewhere, not sure where. Caterpillar went to South Carolina which can be like leaving the country (gonna catch heck for that one!) York Peppermint Patties aren't even here anymore. I think HD is secure for awhile as they just built a huge addition and visitors center. There's a thought - would it be sacreligious to have a group from VR show up at Harley for a tour?

Not true. Hershey's is a publicly traded company. Annual report can be found here: http://www.thehersheycompany.com/about/profile.asp The word Heinz does not appear anywhere in the annual report.

I have similar thoughts and sentiments about buying raw materials from offshore. I am the purchasing manager for a materials handling equipment manufacturer. In order for us to be able to compete I source many items from overseas for a variety of reasons. There is a large bearing that I buy. I can buy it domestically (though in reality the "domestic" supplier is European). It has a nine month lead time and costs almost $1900. I can source a virtually identical bearing from China for $1200 and have it in three months. There are wheels that I buy that can be made domestically for about $9.00. From Taiwan, I pay $1.10. When I buy 10,000 at a time, this is a considerable savings. We sound good and patriotic if we go into a prospective customer and say "American Made" but when that adds $1M to the price tag, it doesn't mean a thing. If I had my druthers I wouldn't spend a dime overseas. If we're going to stay in business though, I must.

As my late father-in-law used to say, "put them all in one place and blow 'em the h*** up!"

I wish more drivers not only knew about it but would actually take the time to go through the program!

I am a very good tipper. With a dinner, I start the night at 15%. Friendly, timely service and the number goes up. Crappy service or a lousy attitude, the number goes down. A couple of weeks ago I left a 0% tip for dinner. That's the first time in years I stiffed anyone. But when everyone at the table has empty glasses and we've been waiting for 15 minutes or more to order dessert, and THEN - I see the waitress sitting at a table talking with some friends, well - my tip reflected my satisfaction! But typically I leave around a 20% tip. When my twins were little and made large messes at a restaurant I left even better tips. Back when I had more hair, I tipped the barber well. If I have a lot of bags, I will tip a bellhop well. I refuse though, to leave a tip in one of those jars that are popular now that have the sign "Tips Appreciated".

Just as an aside Mariners Fan...I am a huge baseball fan. One of the items I collect is Seattle Pilot cards. I went to a card show one day and asked a dealer if he had any Seattle Pilot cards. He said, "No. I just carry baseball cards." Were you around in '69 for any games?
