  3. At first glance I thought it was an old Mosin Nagant 7.62x54 but the mag looks wrong. All the shops around here had a barrel of them in the corner for $79 back in the 80's.
  4. I prefer to use the KISS method of troubleshooting (Keep It Simple Stupid method) before diving deep. Seeing the jug and head will reveal if there is catastrophic damage or not causing compression loss. Knowing the dependability of these V4s I wouldn't overhaul one with cylinder damage. The cost of parts and labor of overhaul vs the cost of a low mileage used isn't worth it to me. If there is internal damage I don't waste my time further checking the bad one, time is short therefore expensive to me. I hope my engine building days are behind me, I just don't enjoy it anymore. Back to the KISS method I will admit to learning that the hard way on occasion. There was a time I'd tear down a bad engine just to see why it went, I'm just not that curious anymore unless it just did something very weird.
  5. I use a local tire shop for all my cages that doesn't sell MC tires but will mount anything I ask him to. I bought the Nexen from him mounted and out the door for $60 if I remember correctly.
  6. Nope. I don't know the wrenching experience of the OP so start with basics to get the brain moving in the right direction for troubleshooting. 1st step is never assume anything and get the head around the problem and consider all possible causes starting with the most likely and/or easiest to test moving toward a solution. There are multiple possible explanations but seeing in the cylinder and head will give insight for base line troubleshooting.
  7. I'm running the 777 on the front. I did the swing arm bearings the same time I did the CT. I did get some crazy stuff coming back from NY but tracked it to the steering head bearings. I had gottem them too tight and it would pick up an aero wobble. Keep in mind all these things have to work together and it doesn't take much for it to be off enough to wobble. I've read of some hating the CT but later figuring out it was the swingarm bearings loose. I recommend checking it all when installing a CT.
  8. I've locked it a few times now. With the wide contact patch it doesn't feel as squirrelly and while I don't like it I don't feel out of control. Once at 80 on the slab trying not to get run over I could see the smoke in the mirror but it straightened up as soon as I got off the pedal.
  9. All that usually fails is the points. $30 part and one solder joint. OEM pumps are hard to beat, none of the ebay cheap pumps are worth using.

  11. Before going all in for an engine swap I'd take a look in the low cylinder with a borescope. The problem could possibly be in the head with valve issues. Take off the valve cover and look for a stuck valve or broken valve spring. Bad engines and valve issues are both pretty rare in these engines so I'd make sure what is going on. If it's a piston or ring problem with that low compression it should be smoking pretty bad and have some serious blow by pressure coming from the crank case.

  13. Well since this thread showed back up I'll update. After the shoulder surgery I figured out all I could do was to ride while healing up. Everything else hurt me, so ride I did. I did an 1100 mile saddlesore ride, 2200 mile trip to Niagara Canada and Don's MD two up with the trailer, 1700 miles to the WNY rally and back, and lots of local miles. I've put over 10,000 on the tire and still looks good, no I haven't measured tread depth. I couldn't be happier with the tire and will put another on when this one is done.

    Saddlebum, I gave all my useful(???) advice to Jim on the shoulder. I don't have any experience with major knee injuries so all I can say is good luck and heal well. See ya up the road.

    Jim I know not all shoulder surgeries are the same but I had mine done this past March. They trimmed up the frayed rotator cuff, took out all the bone spurs, and repaired a full thickness labrum tear. Surgery was March 5th, to the dismay of my therapist I was riding locally in early May. I went on a Saddlesore run May 17th covering 1100 miles in 18.5 hours, and went on a 2200 mile round trip up to Niagara, met you at Bob's, down to Don's, and back to KY in June. The shoulder felt better on the bike than in any of our cages. It's pretty accurate on the weather forecast but I'm glad I had it done. I had gotten to the point of not being able to work between the weakness and the pain. I will suggest you have a good recliner, it was the only place I could sleep for a few weeks. After that I had a chair by the bed, I'd prop my arm in a pillow there to sleep. Good luck.
  23. That's why I was so disappointed with them. Either they aren't offering full service or not doing the whole job. I find it hard to believe no one was bringing bikes back for scheduled maintenance.
  24. It really depends on what his collection has at the time. My problem was that none of the dealers around here knew what a 25mm shim was. I used Skydoc's kit and he had most of what I needed, another member sent me the two not in the kit so the kit grew by two more. I was really disappointed in the dealers here evidently not checking the bikes they serviced or they would've known what I was looking for. I had one that told me I must be working on an antique bike to need them, he looked at me like I was crazy (no need for comments here Carl) when I told him Yamaha had them in the 2013 bikes.
