Be careful what you say if you do to the doc. I have a 5ft spring steel pry bar I was using overhead when it slipped and popped my melon bad enough to stitch. When I told them it was a pry bar it was an automatic assumption somebody assaulted me. I finally talked them out of calling the police but it wasn’t easy. I did admit there are probably people out there who’d love to crack my head but I did that one myself. Second warning: if they want to put staples in your head make sure the nurse doing it is strong enough to squeeze the stapler without using your skull for leverage. She hurt me worse than the pry bar. Good luck with the headache.

2008 Royal Star Venture headlight
RDawson replied to DP57's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just plugged it in and use it. No extra mods or any problems at all. I made sure all wires are tied up and away from it. I do a lot of night riding and like it. -
Ha I’m in KY. I understand the language. Got called out in NY for my accent, told em I didn’t have one they did.

Gonna do my best to make this one. We’ve been to Don’s and WNY a couple times each but haven’t been able to catch one down south.
-
We get a little, I was just yanking Joe’s chain. There’s a month or two we get cold enough to park em. It’s usually not over a couple weeks at a time.

Riding season??? We have deer season, turkey season, etc around here. Rest of the time we’re riding. :stickpoke::stickpoke::witch_brew:

I hate seeing this. I too never met Dale but admired his knowledge and creativity. After reading his obit it hit me that his inventions keep my crew safer ever time we crawl into our fire engines. RIP Zag.

Went on a group memorial ride yesterday, got in 150 miles two up and got to try out the new FJR final drive with a new Nexen rear tire. We made the first 30-40 miles with the group before I had to split off and do our own thing for a while. We rode the West Tn dragon 3 times (39 miles in all) and rejoined the group. As with most rides around here the HD snobbery was pretty heavy, they left me alone but put down a 1st gen 87 Blonde for being slow. You should’ve seen the looks I got when told them that if that bike is running right there wasn’t one in the group that could keep up to it.

Best rain gear I ever used was the frame mounted 1st gen fairing.

Same as you I never met Dan in person but had fun jabbering back and forth here. His brother ended up with 5 years, sentenced in 2017 with credit for time served he should be out soon.

I didn’t read back thru the whole post but have you checked swing arm bearings? I did mine before the Nexen because I’d read a post about that issue. I tightened my head bearings too tight and it really kicked in the wobble behind big trucks and speeds over 85-90. I replaced the Head bearings this year and it has a whole new disposition now. I replaced the Nexen with another last week and swapped to the FJR pumpkin at the same time. Gotta be careful with the bugs in my teeth with all the smiling now.

Gen 1s are a blast on local rides and I love it in the twisties, I just can’t stay in the saddle all day with my legs tucked under me. The gen 2 stretches me out and the seat fits me better for long days. Several 5-800 mile days and my record of 1100 in one day is easily doable on it. I have back issues (2 crushed vertebrae when I was young and invincible) and something about that seat I feel better after a long days ride than I do before it.

A post from the past. The first reply on the last page was our old buddy Yammer Dan.

More mounting space
RDawson replied to Papabird's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I used a Ram mount with a master cylinder clamp base for the phone, the phone is also my gps. I have an Edsets Bluestreak to Bluetooth music, directions, and integrate phone calls into the bike audio systems. My Amplirider and Bluestreak remotes are Velcro mounted on the master cylinders. Cup holder on the bars and USB ports in place of the cassette. No camera as of now. Trying to clear the bars and de-clutter. -
Got home from the fire dept and finished installing the FJR pumpkin and new Nexen tire before getting called back to work for guys getting sent home with Covid symptoms. Got in 20 miles for a test run before the call.

Question on the VMax pumpkin swap
RDawson replied to RDawson's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I finally got around to doing the swap. A local machine shop milled out the speed sensor and I installed it this week. I ground down the “deck” where the sensor sets as it was thicker than the OEM casting and made 1/4” spacers behind the acorn nuts as the studs in the FJR final are longer than the venture. Took it for a test run and yeah I like it. I never checked rear gear temps on the OEM but it’s running 155* which doesn’t seem bad to me. I did lose cruise in fourth also. -
The idiot jab is a joke from back in my construction days, I was always the one willing to work up high and took all the jobs up there. In the beginning there was some exhilaration but soon became normal and comfortable. We’re in a small town with only 4-5 college buildings tall enough to stretch the ladder truck all the way out. I don’t get that high very often anymore so some of the normal feelings are gone and the older I get some nervousness does set in. Careful movement and safety belts are becoming normal now, the younger me scoffed at the idea. Somehow I lived through those days. As far as super human nerves I think most of us do things we’re comfortable doing that scares others to death, motorcycles for one. I’ve watched linemen climb power poles in a storm to get power back on, not for me. I talked to a woodland firefighter once and told him no way in hell I’d do what he did, his response was you structure fire guys are nuts. It all boils down to what we’re trained to do and can be comfortable doing it.

Working up high has its advantages, fewer idiots up there to deal with. :whistling:
