We should be in Roanoak from the 2nd thru the 7th. Staying on a lake near there. Not sure what the name of it is. Maybe the one south. PM me your contact info so we can call you. thanks
-
I like the 65 south out of Branson and then the 412/62 east.... and that will take us to Memphis where we will look to spending the night or maybe up the road in Jackson. This is totally new territory for us.... we've added the Shanondoa Valley to our trip. Did that quickly by car years! ago and want to see more stuff there this time... long as we are in the neighborhood... so to speak. thanks for the input.

We have been known to do rides! but this is going to be a real Ride!. Leaving out June 20th from SLC, Ut. to a nice lake in Roanoak, Va. where there is a cabin and sailboat waiting. Taking about 3+ weeks. Our trip route, right now, is as follows: - SLC to Steamboat Springs, Co. (done this run and it's nice) - Steamboat Springs to Colorado Springs using the mtn roads (of course) through Breckinridege and coming in the back door to Col. Springs. Great BBQ place in Manitou Springs and across the street is a drop dead, cardio disaster fudge shop. Mmmmm. - Col. Springs to Dodge City, Ks. I teach film making at a university, bought the rights to a book, author lives in Dodge.... business meeting you know.... - Next stop, Branson, mo. to visit the daughter who is the Media production manager for the Dutton family Theater. I think this will be a 2 day run. I see toll roads in Ok, and Ak. not sure about those... everything out here is 'free'ways ya know. We are actually going south out of Wichita to the 412 to Tulsa. Maybe staying there or Siloam Springs before heading to Springdale then NE to Branson. Some twisty roads there that are calling me.... - From Branson it will be west and south to Roanoak. Not sure on the route here.. up for suggestions. I think we are leaning towards getting to Roanoak but wandering when we leave heading back... so maybe catchin 64 might be the best? Route back--- - We are liking the idea of Knocksville and Nashville. Have not spent time in the country music capital of the universe (maybe 'cause country and us don't get along... personal issue of course).... but the city seems full of fun stuff to see of a day or so. Up for suggestions here as well. Or we could take a northern route back to Utah. Not really interested in pounding 70 or 80... done that... been there. So that's our adventure this summer. Input, comments welcome. We pack light, travel just fast enough to see the sights and live by the code "all destinations are subject to change if the mood strikes us".

Question on wiring XM radio
Trimster replied to WIKD's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I just mounted my XM (skiFi2) and here's what I did: 1- split the fairing 2- went to radio shack and got an 1/8" stereo headphone splitter (allows 2 people to listen to the same source) Also got a aux cig. lighter kit. 3- pulled the aux audio input from the back of the cassette player head and put the new splitter in line. There is a tutorial in the tech area I think. 4- I spliced into the existing cig. lighter plug wiring for the new cig. lighter plug. 5- plugged the XM cig lighter power adapter in the new plug, taped it up with electrical tape and zip tied the stuff to existing framework in there so it would not move around. 6- I got this mount for my XM.... and there is a bent metal plate that holds the antenna. This worked super. If you fish around the site enough you can put together the pieces in chrome.... 7- coiled the antenna cable in a coil the size of the underside of the antenna mount plate and zip tied it in place. Super clean install. Everything works great. listen to tunes with key on ACC. XM unit is in a perfect position on the right handle bar. My 2 cats worth. -
For A different take on vests... I have been using the Tech Niche, battery powered vest this season. Nice! Fleece inside, wind proof outer shell, nice design, well built. 4400 mah battery with 9 power settings. 3 is pretty toasty on 30 degree morning... 5 is hot. Have not had the guts to try 9... It seem to run for 6-8 hrs on 5. Nice thing... NO current draw on the bike and you walk into the cafe taking your heat with you. LiPoly battery. Downside is there are 3 heater pads... two over the chest and one mid back. Keeps your core temp right on, but the wife does not like the hot back pad right in the middle of the back when in the queen seat. If your jacket is drafty, then this vest might not cut it. I wear a long sleeve turtleneck, the vest, a leather jacket with liner and, so far, have been very comfortable during the 80 mph blasts to work here in Utah. Pads and wiring are removeable so you can throw the jacket in the wash. I got mine through this distributor Acehighleathers.com under the link 'other cool stuff'. The photo shown is the old version of the vest. The new one is much better and stylin enough to wear in public.

Paul: looking for a CarbTune device to use. My 2000 RSV is sucking gas. Know anyone in the SL area that might have one I can contact? thanks Bob Trim, Tayorsville.

Ok, I give up... where's the fuse located for the 12 v cigarette lighter plug? Interestingly enough the fuse box itself is not mentioned in the official Yamaha manual. What's up with that..... thanks

Avon Venom-X MT90B16 won't fit
Trimster replied to Trimster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Happy ending.... They did the wrachett strap thing and wonder of wonders... it seated. So tire is mounted and on we go. They are a pretty good shop, just not use to thinking outside the box. Soon as it stops snowing... I can give it test. Love having Avons again. Thanks again for all the input. -
Avon Venom-X MT90B16 won't fit
Trimster replied to Trimster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for all the input.. fast. latest info. Southwest Moto got back to me in about 5 min. via email...WOW... that is service. They said..."tuff tire... use a bead blaster..." cool thing that wraps around the tire... inflate it and it will squeeze the tire onto the bead area. Kinda like a mondo rachett strap. Called the shop, they have one, just don't use it. Doh! who is smartest... the tool on the wall or the tech leaning against the wall. Mmmmmmm. We'll know tomorrow. Stay tuned. -
Argh. Got the new Avon from Southwest Moto Tire (great price, fast delivery, fresh stock... just no way to phone them)... Front Avon Venom-X AM41 MT90B16 74H Now the shop can't mount it. It's more than 1" narrower. they can't get it spread enough at the bead to have it seat. Was there other, wider, rims available for an 00 RSV? Mine look like everyone else's I have seen. thanks

Engine won't turn over
Trimster replied to Trimster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
OK... new news and it's good. Pulled the plugs and put a wrench on the crank via the left crank cover plate, and spun the engine and... wait for it..... no bad noises. That rules out the valves. So I'm putt'n it back together and will spin it over with the starter. The other good news... is that we have angles looking out for us. When I put the bike on the lift, I found a rather nasty metal screw in the front tire. It had not been there long. Maybe the day before. I blast to work and back in the fast lane, feet away from the concrete divider wall. Front tire blowouts at 80 do not have good outcomes in most cases. So what ever jammed up that day in Nov. saved my bacon. I'll keep you posted on what's up from here. Thanks for the input. -
Engine won't turn over
Trimster replied to Trimster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I think I can rule out moisture in the cyl. I was driving it daily to work. Soooo... I'll fire up the garage heater to get things tolerable in the shop and start wrenching. More posting to come.... Thanks folks, you are great. -
Engine won't turn over
Trimster replied to Trimster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Battery is fresh. When you push the button... it's the sound of every amp possible trying to move the starter. Everything dims. It's not the weak sound of a dying or low battery... it's the sound of lots-of-amps trying to move something. -
Just before I parked the bike for the winter I went to start it. It cranked about 1/4 of a rev, there was metal breaking sound and what sounded like a spring or something under tension releasing. Push the starter button now and nothing happens accept the starter trying... dead electrical load. The engine will not spin over. Where do I start looking and testing? My thought was to pull the left side center cover and try to turn the engine crank over with a socket and breaker bar. I'm hoping to eliminate a broken valve I think. If that proves to be good, is there something in the starter gear train I should then dig into. TIA

thanks for the input. I think we can arrange trip reports on the road. That would be kind fun actually. I'll have to check the software that came with my Magellian 4040. Not sure if this is a get there fast trip or smell the roses, checkout the sights trip yet. We tend to check stuff out. We'll keep all posted as various legs of the trip start taking shape.

The wife and I have a loooonnnnngg run planned late June. Salt Lake City to Roanoke and back. 3 weeks riding. My idea of a great time. Now... we need guidance. Out of Utah, down through Southern Utah, through south Colorado and then south down to Hyw 40 is pretty much planned. The rest... we have no clue. We just need to be in the Roanoke area in 5 - 6 days. We're open for input. Thanks bob & Lisa

There are windshield LED lights that cause the plastic to glow around the edges. Wingers like them for their 'light shows' at rallys. If you edge light the lower, clear plastic, it will glow, but only the edges. Which might look pretty cool at night. I'm looking at these for additional rear turn signals. They will mount right on the lower part of the trunk shell, just under the lid-lip. Winter project. bob

Big list for my 2000 RSV: - flip the front tire rotation direction (dealer put it on backwards... doh! that's why they put arrows on the tires) - Upgrade the horns - add trunk LED break light - hide trailer lights wiring under fender - change out front break pads - add XM and GPS mounts (stay tuned. I have a plan others might be interested in) - add Turn signal LEDs to the trunk - Add arm rests for the queen seat - totally reshape the passengers backrest - put on HD pipes - re-set bag rails so they are level - wire bag side reflectors so they are lights - driver crash bar foot pegs ... I think I will be living in the garage. Bob

I can tell you right now that they are way better than stock. They will sound louder than stock because they are more efficient speakers. They will sound cleaner because they have real tweeter. I put a smaller version in my VW, same mgf., same line, and they are great.... for smaller speakers. I'm not sure how many of you know about car audio pricing and quality, etc. $29/pair brand X and $100/pr. Polk (brand name), they are made in the same factory in most cases. For the bike application... Save the $70 bucks for safety chrome and go... cheaper. Bob
-
I put a set of Pioneer poly cone ones on my 1st generation and the sound was substantially better. I am going to change out my RSV's this winter. Here's a good source for all things audio for us DIY'ers. Car speakers here Ones I'm looking at here

I sold my '87 Venture Royale and bought a 2000 RSV in the last month. The RSV is a bit of a pig by comparison. It's top heavy, front end heavy... just heavy. But it cruzes nice! I freeway fly 40 miles each way to work at 80 and it purrs. I had to move my sons '87 Venture and it felt like a toy. I just played with tire pressure and shock pressure. Made a big difference. Tires are fresh by the previous owner but I can't wait to change out the front. It's a different bike. bob

Not so much a low threshhold of pain as my hearing is part of my living. I teach multi media production which includes critical sound mixing. I also consult on acoustic modifications to critical recording/mixing spaces. I've lost enough hearing to age and a few (well many) loud concerts. Got to hold onto what's left ya know. It use to be that in our riding group, the HD's could not fire up until the metrics did (we are pretty quite and you could not tell we were running with the HD's throbbing)...No I have to wait with the HD's. Oh well.

I'd actually like to put 2 stubby antennas Like the HD's have. Any idea where I can score those shorter, rubber-like antennas?

Did the same thing tonight myself. OK, here's my take: 1- BUBs stock are to loud, even w/earplugs 2- re-packed BUB's are still to loud... better but loud 3- BUBs construction quality is really good... 4- Getting the tail cones off to repack was a pain. Parts fit tight! which is good in the long run. If you think that repacking will tame these babies, thinks again. Sell them and move onto HD pipes or modified stock. My two cents as I search for some HD pipes.

Lots have spoken to the seat change-out issue... anyone done anything with the passengers backrest on the RSV? The wife wants something more like the 1st gen (which we just sold) or a Wing. Taller, more wrap around. Not seeing aftermarket customizations like this. Any ideas? bob
