  1. Well I don't need heat shields.. I rode about 180 miles today and I stopped a couple times leaving the bike in natural and still running, I jumped off and quickly felt the side of the trunk next to the exhaust and heck, it was only warm to the touch, not hot at all.. So the "Eck" with the heat shields........ Looking at a spring latch to lock it in place, but still not sure what I want to use. I used a small bungee cord today just to hold it in place so I could try it out. Im not sure what I will carry in it. Maybe my rain gear and rain boots or maybe my tools and air pump...Have no idea yet..
  2. I have given that some thought before and after I mounted it. I am thinking of adding two heat shields / diverters to both forward corners of the trunk, which is a small piece of aluminum plate held on with a couple standoffs / spacers. I will be looking at it more closely today. I spent 8 hours yesterday on it looking for spare parts and making angle braces, match drilling holes and aligning it. I was wore out yesterday. That getting up and down from the floor was killing me..
  3. First let me say that I don't know/remember Shawn's VR.O site name, but his name is Shawn Costley. I tried to find him here, but could not find him. Anyway, Shawn gave me a small trunk from a scooter that he was going to toss out about three months ago. I decided today that I was going to install it. The lid opens towards the rear of the bike, and to mount the trunk to where the lid would not hit the rear fender, I would have had to mount it about 8 to 10 inches back from the rear of the bike and that, (to me), would look like heck so I decided I wanted to make this trunk "slide" backwards on the mount to where I could open it, and then it would "slide" forward and lock in place for traveling. As seen in the pics, it is close to the rear fender when slid forward, but I have plenty of room to open the lid once it is slid back away from the bike. The only thing I have to do now is come up with a simple locking device to hold it in place when I travel... I'm thinking of one of those rubber "T" handle locks, but may come up with something else. I have to sleep on it tonight to see what I can come up with. Then I have to take it all apart to add electric wires and LED's for lights and paint it to match the color of my wing. Check out the pics:
  4. Glad to see another post from you Dan. Hope you heal up fast and get your life back to that normal state once again. You will beat yourself up every time you think of that accident. I still beat myself up for not paying attention and becoming complacent. Get well soon buddy.. Eck
  5. I read this post a while back, but one thing caught my attention as I read it again this time. The 2nd to last sentence in post #1 above states: you must insert your key and turn the ignition switch to ON before you take the bike off the center stand or it will immediately kill. How can this be for there are no electronics what-so-ever (a switch) associated with the center stand? How does taking the bike off the center stand kill it? I can see inserting the key and turning the ignition to the on position (as the last required step to set up the auto start programing), but taking the bike off,or even putting the bike on the center stand doesn't make any sense to me at all, but I am willing to learn more about this.
  6. in 113k miles I have changed my air filter twice and only had to replaced both low beam bulbs since I owned mine.
  7. Just had to post this on my FB page.. Thanks for sharing!!
  8. Let's see, Goldwing 1800 failures.. The listed failures below are the main ones that I persistently hear about. Presently there is an open recall on every GW out there for the rear brakes locking up. Root cause unknown and Honda does not have a fix yet...(temp fix- take to dealer, or loosen rear bleeder to relieve pressure and keep riding..) Alternator failures range anywhere from 80k miles to 200k miles. (You can get a spare - rebuilt Alt for around $175.00 and carry it with you on long trips if you want or have on a shelf ready to install) Starter Relays A and B tend to fail with no warning. Failures begin around 100k miles and up.. (I have heard of some failing on bikes with50k to 70k but very unusual). I brand new ones in my side bag at all times. Cost is around $14.00 ea Several of the switches stick, like the 4-way flasher switch, cruise switch, and reverse switch, but all are very easy to fix. The fix may last a year or two and then begin to stick again. These problems all depend on how often the bike is parked or rode in the elements. I have several links and pictures on how to remove, take apart, clean and reinstall each switch if anyone needs help here. Just contact me. The front fender is a two piece fender containing a front and rear section. The rear section has been known to crack only on those bikes where the owner has installed the rear fender extension. If anyone decides to install a rear fender extension, I have a simple fix that you can do BEFORE you install the rear fender extension so it wont crack. Most any of the known problems with the GW are easily fixable as is on the Ventures. One only needs to know where to go or who to contact to get this information same as the ventures. I am not at all trying to lead anyone away from the Venture for they are very fine bikes and I truly miss my old Venture, but I will gladly offer my help with how to questions anytime to anyone, just feel free to contact me. I have tons of tech articles (some contain great pictures) and I have some know how that I have learned and if I don't know how, I do know where to go and or who to contact with most any problem on the GW 1800's. Here is mine:
  9. Don or Patty, In this article they speak of a new type of motorcycle that may be of some interest to your son. http://news.yahoo.com/shatner-travel-across-us-three-wheeled-motorcycle-214043946.html

SO glad to hear another one made it through an accident...Its good news in one way that the person is OK, but bad news every time I hear of one happening.
  15. Happy Birthday !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:
  16. Mike, I have to agree with what Ragtop69gs is trying to convey to you. You state the bolts are aligned up correctly. That I would have to agree with you on because the "entire" headlight assembly has been attached prior to the outer (front) fairing being put on. However, What ragtop69gs is trying to say is: The two upper mounting bolts (for attaching this "entire" head light bucket assembly), have ONE rubber spacers / grommets / bushings (whatever you want to call them) on each of the two bolts, and each grommet must have a flat washer. To install the entire headlight assembly correctly, each of the two mounting bolts first, MUST go through the head light mounting bracket, "THEN" secondly, each bolt MUST go through a rubber grommet/ bushing, THEN one must align the mounting holes up to these two bolts and tighten in place. The "distance" of spacing that I see between the headlight and the faring is such "the same distance" as the "thickness" of these two rubber grommets and flat washers, so with that said, I have to agree with Ragotp69gs in that the rubber grommets and flat washers MUST be missing. The only way to verify this is to remove the outer /front fairing and visually look to see if the two rubber grommets and washers are behind the headlight bracket assembly. One can not see these if the fairing has not been removed. Oh and I also agree nothing is bent
  17. The price sure changed my mind.. I don't want to go find a job just for a seat..But man that thing is nice!!! Very nice!!.:happy34:
  18. I would go ahead and perform the ignition switch "by-pass" mod now before being left on the road some place you might not want to be... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?75398-By-passing-the-Ignition-switch
  19. I really wanted to go to MD this ear too Randy. Had all the plans of going and then the rains that have been bashing TX decided to head our way, and stretch from gulf to the great lakes. I cant get my wife to ride on the bike on a sunny day let alone ride for hours in it to Ohio and back. I took a ride yesterday up to Tims Ford Lake which is only 1 1/2 hour ride from the house.
  20. Two police officers responding to a domestic disturbance with shots fired arrive on scene. After discovering the wife had shot her husband for walking across her freshly mopped floor, they call their sergeant on his cell phone. "Hello Sarge." "Yes?" "It looks like we have a homicide here. "What happened?" "A woman has shot her husband for stepping on the floor she had just mopped." "Have you placed her under arrest?" “No sir. The floor is still wet. “
  21. Dog gone Lewis. You and Charlene are floating in bad luck lately. I'm glad your heart attack didn't happen on your vacation and you waited till you got back home to have it. Glad Charlene and the grandsons are all ok too.. We can have lunch some other time when you get back on your feet..
  22. Wow, as already mentioned by Venturous Randy, this was hard to read first thing this morning. It's definitely a "wake up" call.. Dan, I wish you well my friend. Prayers are on their way.
  23. VERY NICE!!! I like the colors too. So where is this Ricks custom seats located? I have a GW seat I may consider having done as long as I don't have to go back out in the employment world to do it.
  24. I heard on the news that TX is mandating that 400 homes be evacuated tonight.. Man I hate to see this happen to anyone.
