  1. That sounds reasonable, I think TCI replacement is a good place to not cheap out considering all the other work going into it. Besides I may very well want to be able to alter spark curve and timing which I guess I cant do with the OEM box. I have an 85 Vmax TCI but I think the Ignitek would be best also, I could run resistor free COPS then also. The Vmax vboost controllers are pretty iffy also, they can often be fixed with re-soldering the input beads on the PCB but I would just as soon integrate the better tech and more tunability. I'm going to have to agree with you here. I should be just fine after I sell the Vmax boost controller, TCI and the TCI off the Venture. I thought about the cable to but I would like it to work as a stock Vmax would in that regard. I have most of what I need to do the conversion except this and the air box.
  2. I have a general question about brake calipers. I have been servicing my own brakes/clutches for a looong time but I have never taken one apart and reassembled without kitting it. I have read a few posts about guys "cleaning the pistons" and I'm feeling around to see if anyone has had real luck pulling the calipers apart, cleaning internally and resembling without honing and new seals? Assuming of course lack of significant wear which would obviously require the above mentioned kitting. I just hung R6 calipers all around and after bleeding they seem to drag a bit to, but the pistons seemed to move ok before install. Maybe I need to pull them and do some cleaning, or just put a few miles on them to see what happens since I just slapped them on with the old pads and all (I plan on the HH pads later on). Any input welcome. Normally I would have just kitted them and installed the new pads without pissing about but $ is all tied up elsewhere and the pads/calipers seemed in very good shape, so figured I would roll the dice. It seems counterintuitive that a caliper can be disassembled, cleaned and put back together without leaks but if some of you folks have been able to do just that I would love to know. If I pull the calipers I'm putting new pads in but I would really rather not spring for the kits if I can avoid that $200 expense, also if I do need kits are there any other than the spendy OEM kits that are quality and not from China? I have rarely had good luck with non-OEM items on Japanese vehicles. BTW they are the blue dot calipers from an R6, not sure that makes much difference. Thanks for input!
  3. Please forgive me for beating the dead horse, It recently started getting cold here and I noticed AF pooling up under the bike. I read through all the posts about the O-rings getting old and leaking when cold but it looks like that coolant manifold is fairly easy to remove so I'm going to go ahead and pull that and replace O-rings. My question is do I need the OEM O-rings are am I likely to find some in the vast assortments of new O-rings I have. Just want to check and make sure they arent shouldered, beveled or anything that will preclude me from being able to reassemble with the universal assortment I have, or can easily buy in town. Thanks folks.
  4. I would have to note that the whole powersports market has been really soft for awhile now, and that it's the season that makes bikes even cheaper. I see he's asking $2500 on CL and $1500 here. I would say for the lower price it's well worth looking at. I rebuilt my forks with new OEM bushings, seals and covers for $155 in parts from boats.net , plus $85 shipped for progressives, which it turns out I didnt need because it already had a set installed. I put the new ones in anyway but if someone wanted to try out a set of used progressives they could have them quite cheap. For $1500 with no major problems, and carbs reworked already, not sure how you can go wrong unless there is something the pics dont show. I paid $2050 for my 89 and proceeded too throw more money and time into it, still feeling good about what I got for what I paid, probably went overboard on getting it ready for touring. If I were still on the market and near it I would go check it out.
  5. Aaawww at least you dodged that creepy old guy thing then and get too be cute.
  6. Really glad your taking steps in the right direction. I'm sure your taking it better than I would. So how long will you be incapacitated?
  7. Awww I just LOVE 2 cycle and Rotary engines, either of which perform admirably well. Whichever way it goes, pneumatic, hydraulic or electric it should be very cool. My guess is you could use any of those. I wonder what spring pressure vs a conventional camshaft engine. I also wonder what happens when these things wear and need to be replaced, how labor intensive would that be. On my current car the intake has to be removed to replace the starter since it resides between the cyl heads in the valley. I wonder if any service of this system would require pulling apart the top half of the engine or just the VC. Abolishing the venerable timing belt service intervals would sure as hell be nice though, wouldn't it?
  8. Thats a good looking jacket, I dont ever recall seeing one like it anywhere. Nice acquisition. I think my riding jacket was around $250 from Triumph.
  9. I havent though of that for years, like wow! For bonus points you can do a "like totally". Throwing in a "Radical" might be overkill, but hey, why mess around with half measures brother? Snyper, you can come out of your corner and rejoin us at the grown-up table, just let us know you identify as a Valley Girl and all is good. Is there anyone riding a Venture, especially a 1st gen, that wont remember these times? In the times we live in now they dont release the cellphone long enough to form a coherent sentence.
  10. +1 To bad it sounds so taboo to cut regs and taxes on businesses. If I had a company I would not hesitate to move it offshore if it meant higher profit. After all, its a business, not a charity for the government.
  11. Not to be inappropriate but I heard a story on the New Normal about some of the absolutely insane tech going into, well, synthetic adult companions. I'm not in that demographic but I guess the technology and automation is creeping into every aspect of life. I'm still most excited for self driving cars, think of how much safer we'll be on two wheels.
  12. I stopped going to McD's a long long time ago just because the price went up and the quality remained substandard, even by fast food standards. That and I cant recall last time I went there and got what I ordered instead of some distant variant haha. The kiosk is necessary for them to survive in the face of employees demanding $15/hr. I know these employees were warned they would price themselves out of a job, and now it's happening, this was very predictable but logic and reason are no competition for youthful entitlement. I think there are perks to a kiosk, although I have not experienced one yet we know they will evolve and become more intuitive. I avoid self check out stations and try to go to a cashier because I want these entry level jobs to stay open for students folks who need them. Once they ask for $15/hr I'll be at the self check out as well. Autonomous cars, all electric cars, solar, kiosks, AI, robotics and all fashions of automation, it's all coming. I'm pretty sure that anyone that starts wanting more money then they are worth to do a job can rest assured that some priority will be given to technology being used to replace them altogether. I'm not saying this is a bad thing at all. There was no min wage push here so kiosks are not common at all, I look forward to trying it out and seeing how they streamline the whole experience. I dont think it will be long before you can order and pay with a smart phone app or just slide your card into a slot and push a few buttons and get your food, and with much higher probability of getting your order correct. I was in Devils Lake ND a couple months ago, at a Chilli's and like any Chilli's they had waitresses and servers but they had something new, they had a tablet at each table and when it was time to pay we would slide the card and pay the bill right there while seated. Their system was pretty far from intuitive and it was enough of a hassle that I will probably not eat there again. More work is needed, there are still some growing pains and I suspect some places are trying to integrate automation where it's really not necessary.
  13. Whats funny is as soon as I closed the window I realized that I had blown the chance to go in that direction. I'm sure we can make said snow person feel comfortable. I'm not looking forward to building yet another restroom for snowpeople or those that identify as snow people. It's birth gender will be determined by whatever produce is available on the date of manufacture haha.
  14. 30", wow. I only got a dusting of 2" the other day. Thats enough for a significant snowman!
  15. Thats to rich to even be true, even the IRS ones were reportedly allowing victims to pay it using gift cards. Now if that doesnt raise a read flag then I would suggest that the victim is better off without money than with it. Wow! If you get anyone from the IRS or city/state making claims just give them your lawyers phone number, if it's real then you will know soon enough.
  16. It's not just this one, but there are a couple others that seem to work. "Hello, I can see that you have some problems with your computer, luckily I can fix it over the phone", "This is the IRS, we're commencing with a lawsuit against you, to prevent garnishment and possible arrest you must call this number immediately to satisfy the account." I dont get these calls anymore but I have an elderly client that gets several a week like these. It's heartbreaking that someone can prey on the elderly like that. I have on a couple occasions had scammers want to overnight me a check. I let them do it at their expense, then I just hand it off to the sheriff. At least that way I could cost the scammer some $$. I think it's costs around $20 to overnight a phony check. I told one scammer that I would overnight the difference if he slipped a $20 bill in with the check, and he DID! All I had to do was play along with my dummy voice. I play with all the scammers that call, thats why I believe they dont call me anymore. I've allowed them to hold indefinitely while I "go to my car and get my credit card". I used to get mad but now it's a sport, the annoying ones are the robocalls, cant play with those.
  17. Congrats! I know a happy marriage is a rare and elusive feat, especially over that period of time. Heres to 40 more
  18. I do a fair amount of buying and selling over CL. I tried to sell my modified 88 Samurai and got a lot of lowball offers and trade offers for projects, I still have it. I sold several cars pretty quickly though. I just deflect that part of the game where people want to call and try to negotiate a price before they have even seen the item, lowball or try to trade junk. I found that the best way to combat the douchebaggery that goes with CL is to choose words carefully and give a fairly detailed description in the ad along with a few good pics. It's hit/miss but I still do it. I think $2500 for the Voyager + trailer is a fantastic deal, no matter how cheap you make it there is always someone that will lowball. I would keep that ad up, my guess is someone is going to jump on it, sometimes it just takes a little time for the right buyer to see it, and you may have to wade through some flakes before that happens. It's imperfect but locally here it's the best thing going and free is fine too.
  19. On a cage, feathering can be camber or toe in resulting from any number of issues, inside or outside shoulder wear or feathering can tell some real stories about a cage. On a bike feathering is the result of under inflation in my experience, assuming forks and shocks are in decent shape there should be no excessive cupping or feathering. I believe the Metzlers are just really crappy tires, looking at them and their compound next to the Dunlops, it's night and day. The Metzlers on my Venture were so badly feathered the bike would howl with any lean angle. I had never heard of that happening until I learned about it on this forum. It was so bad that by the time I got the bike home after purchase (300mi) I thought it had a tattered wheel bearing or something. For squaring off, it's sort of expected. I do a lot of open roads with 85+mph and that takes a fair amount of torque to keep a bike moving at that speed, it erases the tires vs. doing 65mph. I'll have to watch the circles and see how these Dunlop E3s wear
  20. Ive had the Metzlers on both my Venture and Vmax and not only did they square off but they all show severe feathering. I just hung E3s on my Venture with 0 miles so far. I'm optimistic that they will wear better.
  21. The battery is coming inside, and the seat. If I leave the seat outside when it thaws I'll find chunks of it packed under the intake manifold of my LS400, where they love to nest, and eat knock sensor wiring harnesses, where it's virtually impossible to reach without removing said intake manifold. So not only the cold but the critters. Still a small price to pay though. I faced her the other way so she wouldn't have to see the Vmax inside. She will be jealous fur sure. I know she will forgive me when we ride! The places she will go, very little traffic, lots of scenery, and yes, some HDs to snack on occasionally.
  22. Thanks to all. I'll go get some more gas to top her off. I still have to get the rear caliper on and lube the cables. Throttle is pretty stiff so that was going to happen anyway. I put her on the center stand already, those tires with 0 miles barely touch the ground, unloading the progressives with 0 miles. I guess winter is the price I pay for rural living. The wall to the outside is glass, I'll have a great view of her outside freezing while I'm inside by the wood stove drinking coffee. Darn, I'll make it up to her in the spring with some real mileage.
  23. I found a few posts and most were entertaining. It occurs to me that I cant get this giant pig through my front door, it will not be joining my Vmax for a toasty peaceful slumber this winter. She must be an outside dog this season, just nowhere she can go but right where she is on my deck. I'll make sure the AF is safe at the bitter temps I'm expecting this winter in Western South Dakota. I plan to bring the seat and battery inside and keep the battery tender going. Non-ethanol tainted fuel with sta-bil, Is there anything else specific to the gen 1 that I may have missed, besides covering it? What do you guys do that have to leave your loved scoot outside in the bitter cold/snow/ice? I'll have a garage next year when I buy a home, no more of this. I dont care about the cars as much but the bikes belong indoors. Thanks for any experience.
  24. Oh crap! Very sorry to hear, broken bones are no fun but a the ability to recover is sure a positive outcome. Keep em' coming with the opioids and let us know how your doing. Your in my thoughts.
  25. I was going to buy a set for my Venture as well. The seller that makes them in the UK has them for $99 for a full set of four and said he would go cheaper for group buy. I'll throw my hat into the ring for a group buy, I was going to get them anyway.
