Wire.... What to use ... and how to join...?

Western Union Splice! Got it, thank you. It surr makes it easier to pull the shrink tube over it. The fuse box idea mentioned by djh3 is really important. I have a pretty modified Suzuki Samurai and had to find a fusebox worthy of exposure to elements like water crossings, heat, anger and mud. I went with a marine fuse box and this is no place to cheap out because of the currents and cost of failure. For something small a good USA or Japan made one like this is nice and has a decent firm fitting lid. There are lots of good ones but I cant stress enough to get a quality box. Buying a $9 Chinese box and having it fall apart really sucks! ask me how I know. The Blue Sea stuff is nice but maybe bulky for a bike. I saw some really nice 1-in 4-out little ones but cant find now. http://m.ebay.com/itm/Fuse-Box-MOTORCYCLE-ATV-Marine-scooter-CUSTOM-Fuse-Box-Universal-4-fuse-custom-/231139455775?nav=SEARCH This is like the one im going to use for driving lights, GPS, charger and heated grips on the mighty Venture. Its nice if the lid fits over the input and output terminals to protect from shorting. -
They have an aweful lot, and OEM too. I use boats.net and revzilla. I dont trust a shop to work on my cars/bikes with the love that I do, It sounds like they have a focus on the customer and thats cool. Good techs are fairly tough to find.

That is awesome. I vividly remember when you got here and very pleased you got to this point. We'll see this fine machine at one of the gatherings hopefuly. I thought the big rally was in WV, I guess I better look it up. Im hoping for at least a couple rallys this year. Mine is almost back on the road with my wish list complete and like you I'm really jazzed!

He told me I was the only one to respond, Ill still offer him a fair price as he seems like a straight up guy, but a fair price may be less than he wants. When I see it I will know if its a nice bike that needs a little love or if its a well used bike that needs lots and lots of love. Ill update Wednesday for sure, I wont be able to actually pick it up until Sunday because im still working. Unless its pristine I'm probably topping out at $500-600. More if its decent and not in a deep state of disrepair, less if its a straight up parts bike. Ill see if I cant get a better pic of it when I see it. Thanks again for the guidance.

Maybe unplug suspect things to rule them out as the culprit, you can always plug it back in later after the issue is found. -

Reaching here, but if you have a trailer hitch and plug maybe check the integrity if the harness modification around back. Dont the lights come on with the key? Only other thing, and I saw this on mine, there was a cobbled battery tender or gerbing type plug along side the OE cables on the battery. I removed it before it could cause trouble. Im not sure where else peopl commonly modify stuff. Maybe try removing the stereo and looking around in there to make sure nothing is pinched and to RO the unit itself. Maybe check along the rear of the upper fairing where all the wires ce out and join the harness and make sure it looks right. There is a cable routing section toward the end of the service manual. Like I said, its reaching but hope you find the issue. Electrical stuff sucks! -

I have buckets of bulk wirr, new and previously enjoyed. When Im doing a project I reach in and grab what looks right. You need less wire to signal a relay than to provide juice to a horn compressor or headlight. I get nutty about neatness, I solder. When I ride I dont allow rain to ruin my day, bike often gets soaked several times on each tour. Crimps are mostly reliable but I have had trouble. I dislike the looks of a crimped fitting and electrical tape is a sin. Here is what I do. For joining wires I strip a lick over 1/4" depending on gauge, smaller is less stripped length, twist them together end to end. Not twisting them together and bending them over. Ill link my COPs below to illustrate. I soldier using 20/40 watt iron ($30) on the he 40/watt setting, lots of heat fast helps the solder flow sweetly through the wires. To long and insulation can burn or it can start to close up your heat shrink tube if that isnt far enough up the wire away from the soldering heat. When I was learning I got jumbles of scrap wire and practiced. So anyway, when I join two wires OR place a terminal I use heat shrink tubing. 1/8" works for most and you can buy it dirt cheap at local electronic suppliers or where you get the iron. Before you join wires you must slide a length of heat shrink tubing onto one end, once the solder is complete and cool pull the shrink tube over the solder joint and hit it briefly with a lighter and watch it suck down amd make a neat tight joint. When I place a terminal I strip ~1/8" off the end of the wire, slide the heat shrink tube over the wire then place a crimp style terminal (with the plastic sleve removed from said terminal) over the bare wire and gently fold the tabs over the wire so it holds, hit it with solder than slide the heat shrink tubing over that, lighter, done. You will have connections virtually impervious to weather and being accidentally pulled or yanked on. Its very neat besides being highly reliable. Im a DIY guy, not a pro but this has served me very well. Im sure a pro could add to this or correct me. Anyways I hope this helps. One of my pics show my iron, got it on ebay for $15 shipped IIRC. I should clarify that 40w is a decent amount of heat so you wont hold it on the joint long before the solder flows nicely, 40w is also to much heat for soldering close to electronic components, it can sizzle a semiconductor in seconds but it does work great for wires/terminals. Im going to guess you could fi d some good tutorials on youtube. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?102440-Run-for-it-it-s-the-COPs!/page4. Mine is the last post. -
carb, plugs, gas, exhaust issues?
CaseyJ955 replied to tntviper1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Try what Marcarl suggested first, very sound advice IMO. Here is a writeup on the "shotgun" cleaning method performed on a Vmax (virtually identical carbs). Like I said Ive had to do it a couple times to light her back up after sitting a while. Not this spring though, pure gas and Seafoam seemed to work great for storage. Its the last stop before carb removal, assuming that the issue lies within the carbs in the first place. Here and most states I have been to they have to label the pump "may contain up to 10% ethanol". Or " pure gasonline, no ethanol added". Guess which one I get whenever possible. I had ethanol in my mower and the following spring I had to pull the carb and when I opened it up it was full of yellow corn squeezings/jelly. I despise ethanol tainted fuel and everything that brought it to the fueling stations. http://vmax.lvlhead.com/tips/shotgun.htm Assuming you checked plugs and HT leads, plug caps, sometimes they can get crusty after sitting, I have used downpipe spit sizzle test to make sure shes hitting on all cylinders. These bikes run well on only three pots -
I counter that by never riding in anyones blind spot. It can be tricky in town but I manage. If I see a phone I know there is a much greater chance they will do something stupid. I waste no time passing either. Oh well, those that do it will tell you its not an issue (denial) haha. So I spotted this in the paper and thought I would share it to bring se levity to an otherwise serious problem http://www.kotatv.com/content/news/?article=417808103. I got a chuckle out of it. Better them than us, right?

carb, plugs, gas, exhaust issues?
CaseyJ955 replied to tntviper1's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have my idle set to 1050 but it will idle at half that. When you parked it last fall did it have pure gasoline or gasoline with ethanol? Is it popping and/or missfiring or just lacking power? From just sitting I would not suspect plugs or synch (although I'm big on keeping a good synch). The gas is most suspect when sitting. Pure gas can take a season of sitting but ethanol probably not so much. Depending on symptoms I'm wondering if the Shotgun cleaning might not clear things up. Ive had to do it on my VMX a couple times after it sat awhile to get it running right. The CVs really dont like to sit, esp w/ethanol -
How to use Seafoam
CaseyJ955 replied to MattK's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I leave the Seafoam treated fuel in mine all winter so I doubt it will hurt yours in 10 days. Maybe if theres some gunk in the carbs a nice bath in treated fuel could loosen things up. Its a pretty straight forward bike so my guess is you will be able to do a lot of the stuff yourself, "ish" gets you through the door. There are lots of folks here willing to help and plenty of forum info on about everything that can go wrong with a Venture. These are damn decent bikes but I'm going to bet shes due for some love. Let us know how the ride goes. Your kinda-sorta close to the N Cascades! I love that ride! Oh yea, welcome to the forum. -
The first Venture I bought was way out there in Mitchell, it was a shakey ride with the hammered neck bearings and tired forks. The one Im going to see Wed is a 10 minute ride from my house so if it will move and stop I'll probably see if I get her home. I live in Harley country so I must know someone with a trailer if it comes to that. Ive got my eyes on those passenger arm rests for my main Venture, I think wifey will dig that. Ideally it will still be a decent solid runner with a little love. I hope to have time to check diaphragms and some other points of expensive repairs. The number I have in my head is $500 which is less than what he said but Ill have to see. I guess for this to work I should be into it for under $800 before its safely ridable. If its worth $2000 everywhere else then I might be lucky to get $1500 here. Worst case for $500 I get a cache of parts and a 1300 low end for my vmax. Im glad to know the aprox value, I was hoping it would land around the 2k mark, I would rather someone get a solid Venture for a fair price than turn it into parts. My son has shown interest in my Venture so maybe Ill see how he does with this one.

How to use Seafoam
CaseyJ955 replied to MattK's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If the fuel is bad it may have that varnishy funk. If it fires up and runs its probably ok. I would ad 3-4 oz to your half tank and let it run long enough to get the treated fuel into the carbs. When I winterize mine I run a few oz to a full tank and park it. This spring it lit up like a champ so allowing the Seafoam to sit in the carbs seems to have done no harm at all. Avoid ethanol tainted fuel, carbs dont care for it but sometimes there is no choice. I use about 1oz Seafoam every other fillup just to try and keep things clean and an oz after I get stuck with ethanol. If yours runs rough it could need some tuning and tweaking, no telling what the PO did or didnt do so not bad to get the maintainance current. How comfortable are you with basic maintenance and minor repairs? The V4 has an inherently lopey idle when compared to a flat six or inline 4. -
Yup, but it has to be said. Hard to believe how many folks place their convenience above public safety. With all the traffic and bad drivers all over the US I would hope that any thinking adult would choose not to add factors to make themselves more of a road hazard, yapping on the phone is while sailing down the road for instance. Texting and driving should be an immediately jailable offense like drinking and driving. For the last couple years I was doing recovery I saw more fatalities over phones than alcohol. Scary stuff for those of us on bikes.

What the Heck
CaseyJ955 replied to SpencerPJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
^ what he said. In my experience an immediate fuse pop is a direct ground where there shouldnt be. Maybe a good visual inspection of the harness. It could be a pinched or frayed wire somewhere touching a ground. Im not sure what component if fried would cause a ground issue like that. -
The Carbtune is great, I love mine but maybe its not old enough for the sliders to stick, it still works as it should. This might be a good time to point out that carb synching is a part of regular maintainance, carb racks are not really a set it and forget it deal. Periodic adjustment is ideal to keep that solid idle, snappy off idle performance, super easy starts and optimal MPG. Not that there couldnt be other factors to interupt this. I throw mine on once or twice a season or any time I touch the carbs and theres usually room for adjustment to get it spot on. These great bikes will actually run okay on only three cyl so it might be easy not to notice as it gradually falls out of synch. Im sure a VMX or XVZ could go years without a synch but Im OCD about making multiple carbs behave like EFI so take this with a grain of Na. If a bike could experience being manic this is when it would happen

I saw the hat story out of TX, no idea why hes not in jail for 13 counts of vehicular manslaughter and careless driving. He should be facing life. Maybe this will spur some changes in the law. So texting is really bad, we know it now, it rivals drinking and driving. When I was a towtruck op I cleaned up plenty of fatality collisions over just talking and driving. Notice I did not say "accident". Seems most times I have to do something colorful to keep from being run over there is an idiot with a phone stuck to their head, often they dont even realize that they almost caused a collision. Stupid! Texting is even stupid beyond that. Any phone use and driving is just a really bad idea. I guess working a scene left an impression on me. There is something unique about the potpourri of blood, petroleum, road flares, piss and s&$t while sweeping up teeth, chunks of skull and brain matter. Seriously, please just put the phone down and pay attention. Its no joke.

Awesome! I have had two mothers-in-law and neither of them spoke a lick of English. One spoke Tagalog and I he other Ilonggo.Oh yea! Authentic cooking! Sounds like shes a great version of a mother-in-law! Sounds lile you are going to have a great couple months. You may not get so lucky with the English speaking ones:rotf:

#2 job of cameraman, get excellent coverage of the guy staggering around in circles babbling incoherently and slipping in and out of consciousness. My wife HATES snakes, I guess in the PI they are pretty serious business.

Thanks for the responses. Ill check the brakes for oil contamination and see how the forks feel. When I bought mine the seals were weeping but didnt get to the brakes yet, rode her home 300 mi and by the time I got home I knew she would need fork overhaul, brakes and steering bearings. The bike in question is maybe a 10 minute ride from my front door. If the brakes are soaked I wont chance it, even for a few minutes. If it is what he says there is a good chance I can gimp it home. I have so much love into my current Venture that Im sure this one will either be for parts OR if its too clean to part Ill put some love into her and maybe find her a new home. Maybe ill let my son roll it around for a season or two. I dont need this bike but it would be a shame for it to fall into the wrong hands or end up as scrap. I would even be fine with someone that wants a Venture buying it out from under me. I cant really walk away from it if its an easy fix or has many valuable/useful parts. Its blue! I cant ignore that, now can I?

https://rapidcity.craigslist.org/mcy/6064367682.html Thanks for the fast comeback. According to owner it starts but wont stay running without throttle. I figure a fair chance I could shotgun it and ride it home. He threw out a number well under 1000 that sounds good so I know were on the same page. I dont want to rip the guy off but I have to buy it right. I will see it this coming week and if its in the condition mine is in ill snag it. I let him know that the plastics have to be good and the accessories operational to approach the number he said. Even if I service it and pass it along I need to remember that nobody in SD gives a squat about Ventures so local buyers may be nil. If its a parts bike I was thinking 500 or less. I guess I just want to make sure I dont make an unfair offer, I'll inspect it Wednesday and formulate an offer or pass. I guess I was just fishing for what something like this running might fetch. I know what you mean about pics being deceptive, I told a story of a pristine red one with 9k that ran like new, I drove all the way to IA to buy this fantastic machine. When I got there I rode a machine with 109k that needed lots of maintaince and repair, many cosmetic issues and a noisy engine. The owner did not intentionally misrepresent the bike, he really didnt know. I accidentally found my current Venture on the way back from this trip. I paid $2050 for mine and its very nice but I still ended up dumping quite a bit of $$ into it to make it just right.

Recently I stumbled across an 89 Venture for sale, non running but clean and complete. I know it will need a battery, fork seals or more and some carb futzing to get it running. Im sure there are other things it will need as I get into it. Its a blue 89 Royale with under 40k on the clock. Im going to see it in person this week and fairly likely buy it. What I would like to know is what you seasoned Venturers feel a good price to pay for a bike like this would be, and what it might be worth if I service her and get her going? It is also possible that I will simply part it out, use the lower engine/trans to convert my Vmax into a 1300 and get better gears, then I would have some correct color fairings and such for parts and some resellable stuff. I put a link to the ad in the link section several days ago before I started to think about it. Thanks.

Yamaha did a BW350 a while back but these look like they predate those by a few years. Cool though, are you picking these up? Thinking about it?
