Speedometer Compatability
DevilDog replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for all the help guys. I picked up an 86 model and will see how it goes. If the console won't line up, I'll just swap out the speedo. Thanks again. -
It looks like my speedometer finally gave up the ghost. Anyone know what speedometers are compatible with an 84? I find everything from 83 to 91 but no 84s. I figure it would be easier to replace the whole instrument console than the speedometer itself but wanted to make sure everything would play well together before I buy a part from a different year. Thanks.

Carb Sync Screw?
DevilDog replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I am not quite sure how I managed to do it. I think I assumed a previous "condition" and pushed it over the edge because it is stripped almost the whole length. I know I wasn't cranking on it that hard. Anyhow, good point on checking the rest of the component. Thanks woz -I will see if I can find a screw local first. If I can't find anything I may take you up your offer. -
I got too rough with the carb sync screw for #3 and stripped it out. I was looking at the parts fiche on Flatout but can't seem to identify the screw I need. Anyone know the part number or the screw size I need? Thanks. Carl

Awesome job Skydoc! Talk about perfect timing! I am well past due on this project myself and got online specifically to search for JB's instructions on his install. I love this site! I'd definitely like to hear about your experience, and tips, and where you got your supplies. Thanks! Carl -
Congratulations JB! All the best to the two of you. Carl

Side Stand?
DevilDog replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I just put mine on this afternoon as well. I don't have any side to side play in the hole but how snug should the stand pinch the bracket? I have the bolt tightened about as much as I dare but the stand still seems to be pretty loose. I can put it in the vise to close the gap some more but I am not too sure what "right " is suppose to look like and I don't want to risk breaking the stand. Any ideas? -
Side Stand?
DevilDog replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have the replacement stand but I haven't got it put on yet. I am still waiting for the new bolt to come in. Should be here any day now. I ordered the bolt and some other parts from Flat Out. Is that who you ended up using? I wonder if the replacement stand you are getting is made out a different type of metal other than the cast iron. I think Condor was thinking that Yamaha went to investment grade metal for them for later years but I am not sure if that included the replacement parts as well. There is probably not an easy way to tell. -
I happy to donate and thanks for all your hard work Don. I haven't had a chance to meet any of the great folks on here yet but without all their help I would still be trying to figure out my bike's "issues". Every day I look forward to checking in on what's happening with the cast of characters that frequent here. Yep, I am addicted. Thanks again!

Side Stand?
DevilDog replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Here are a couple of pics of the sidestand hole. Without a rule on it and from an angle the hole does look like it is oblong. It is just an illusion though (at least in my bike's case). It actually measures about a 1/2 inch consistantly all the way around. -

GW - I will take a look at the hole on mine tomorrow and will post up a pic or two with a ruler to help show the size. Now you have me wondering if mine might have enlarged itself since it looks like a loose bolt is the cause of the problem. Dave - Appreciate the info. Fortunately the Muffins have taken care of me. -
Side Stand?

I have attached pictures of the stand. Not only did the cast iron break it also sheared the bolt. When I bought the bike I went around and checked all the bolts but I don't specifically recall if I ever checked the side stand. In any case it looks like the bolt worked itself loose which probably caused both the bolt and the stand to fail. Either that or it was just a catastrophic failure. It's probably worth everyone taking a minute or two to check their stand just to make sure everything is nice and tight. I ended up with a few minor scratches on myself and the bike. Could have been a lot worse (and expensive) if it had failed in a parking lot and fell into someone else's bike or car. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/vbpicgallery.php?do=view&g=1693 -
Anyone have a spare side stand for an 84 that they want to sell? I took the bike off the center stand this evening, kicked out the stand, heard a snap, and immediately took a slow trip to the floor as I watched my broken side stand slide across the room. Luckily this happened when I was in the garage and not in some parking lot. No warning and I am not sure what caused it. They look to be made of cast iron so I guess it just had enough pressure to finally give out. Anyhow, let me know if you have an extra that you want to get rid of. Thanks.

Can the copper exhaust gaskets be reused? I thought I saw somewhere on here a thread about reusing copper washers, etc but you have to anneal them first. Of course, I can't find the thread now. Anyone have any experience with this? The story is that I had to tear the exhaust apart on my 84 to repair a hole in one of the headers. The old gaskets look to be in good shape so I figured I'd try to reuse them if possible. Thanks!

Removing Rear Header
DevilDog replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Jeff. Good thing I asked the question. I was about try to remove it out the right side by moving the rear brake master cyl and associated parts out of the way. Lot less work to pop off the valve cover. -
I think I may have a hole in one of the pipes on the rear header so I need to take it out to take a look. What's the easiest way to remove it? I have removed the collector but didn't want to start needlessly disassembling the top half of the bike before checking to see if someone found an easy way to get it out. I have checked the manual and the site but haven't ran across anything yet. Thanks for the help.

It was pretty clear to me from the very start that I was buying an aftermarket aluminum fork brace not a "SuperBrace". I've compared both and besides the 4 holes they look quite a bit different. No way I would ever confuse the two. Condor is simply aggregating a group buy order. It has absolutely nothing to do with patent infringement. If SuperBrace thinks they have a infringement then they need to take that issue up with the manufacturer not Condor. Instead of making ridiculus and unfounded accusations, SB2007 (if he/she really represents SuperBrace) needs to read between the lines and listen to what 45-50 bike owners are saying. The SuperBrace is overpriced! Thanks Condor for doing this for us. My PayPal payment will be on the way shortly.

Sounds like a good deal. Add one more raised hand.

Mike, I had a similar problem with my 84 after I first got it. In addition to the advice Dan and George are giving, you might want to consider replacing the fork springs. When I first started having the problems I had the forks rebuilt, new oil, etc but still had the "bottoming out" issue. After some research it turns out that weak fork springs are pretty common on the early ventures. I replaced the originals with a set of progressive springs and haven't had any problems since. (2 years) And it also made a huge difference in the handling. Hope this helps. Carl

Starting Problem
DevilDog replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I hate it when I find extra parts on a bike. I found a hose (5/16) on the left side of the bike. (Pic attached) About 2 feet down there is a filter of some sort. It looks like it would have attached to the battery box but it (battery box) has a vacuum cap on the drain nipple. Any idea what its for? After capping vacuum nipples that went to the YICS, is it ok to remove the YICS chamber from the bike? Thought I'd better check in case it needs remain in place to shield the TCI and other wiring from engine heat, etc. Thanks for the help. -
Starting Problem
DevilDog replied to DevilDog's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well I got the fairings off and have the bike pretty much tore down so that I can get to everything. I took the TCI off and took a peek inside. All the solder seems to be good and solid. As said earlier, the connections were pretty corroded so after cleaning those up I stuck the whole thing in the oven just to make sure everything is nice and dry. Thanks for the tip on the YICS. I pulled that off and sure enough there are several hairline cracks on the edges. I am not sure if it's leaking or not but I am plugging the hoses so I don't have to worry about it. Since I have it tore down, anything else I should take a look at or replace? I bought this bike a few years ago and I am sure I am the first one to see it with the fairings off since it was first built. I figured I'd replace fuses, bulbs, lube the speedometer cable, lube all electrical connections, etc. Any other areas to check out? Thanks for the tips and I appreciate all the help.
