Decided to trailer the bike, eh?
-
As far as I'm concerned any negative situation from which you can walk away is a victory! It sounds like you did all the right things (once the tire blew)...I think the biggie was staying away from the front break...this is one of the things that concerns me about my Wing...the brakes are partially integrated, so there would be some brake applied if I were to hit the back brakes in such a situation. Tire pressure (IMHO) is VERY important...many will say to pump up the tire according to the max as listed on the sidewall...I choose (right or wrong) to follow the directions by the bike manufacturer. When we had the RSV, we had the Avons on it...much better than the stock tires...didn't have it long enough to replace the tires again...although I most likely would have put another set of Avons on it. All that being said, I think there is a LOT of luck involved in such a situation. I have heard stories of situations in which the person(s) involved should have been killed...and they walked away from it. I have heard vice versa. I have come to the conclusion that when it is YOUR time...it is your time! In the meantime, though, you won't find me tempting fate! Glad you are okay...hopefully this will be your only chance to pull out of such a situation!

Just got back from a bike trip to Branson Mo and Illinois with my lovely wife. We were pulling a trailer with luggage and “essentials.” Trip spanned two weeks. Got lots of “thumbs up” from people in cars…guess there is something about a cycle on the open road! We had to opportunity to attend an informal reunion with some old Air Force friends we were stationed with in Germany, see some of the sights, and do some riding…then on to Illinois to visit my family and some of my high school friends. On the way back we stopped in West Memphis, Arkansas to visit an old AF buddy I hadn’t seen since 1973. Then another stop in Fort Worth to see one more AF friend I hadn’t seen in about five years. All in all it was a great trip! The trip up through Dallas was 104 degrees…with the traffic, it was really nasty! We ran into rain for about 100 miles from Springfield Mo to the east…then it cleared up. Other than that, the weather was not bad. I had busted my butt to get an American flag the day before we left (mine had started to tatter from the previous day’s ride)…borrowed one from one of our members (thanks, Tom)…somewhere in Arkansas it went airborne! Bummer!!! Got sick three days before getting home…made for a couple of extremely long days! Observations: · If you can physically only do about 400 miles a day (we are senior citizens), a motorcycle is not really that economical o What you save in gas, you more than make up for in motels · Sheepskin cover for the seat was TRULY worth the price! · Will likely take the cage on trips of a 1000 miles or more in the future…when you are the only driver…you are the only driver! It’s like the Cubs pitching staff…there ain’t no relief! · That being said…the ride was great! Stats for the trip are as follows: Total miles 2597.8 Gas averaged $3.449gal Avg mpg 36.3 Total gas cost $245.71

yeah, I thought of them, too...going to check with them first thing in the morn. If they don't have it, I guess I will head up to Blanco. thanks Jim.

We are leaving Friday...early...I need to replace the American flag on the bike (6" X 9")...anyone know where I can get one in San Antonio? Sure appreciate any help so I don't have to go out "naked".
-
Heck no She wasnt..I only drive like that when She aint lookin. That explains why you are still breathing...be careful, my friend...still a lot of riding to do!
-
That is the way it was explained to me...we are going to give it a whirl.

I heard about that...seems the billing thing works only on Texas plates...how about I borrow your plates for a couple of weeks?
-
Was Deb with you? If so, I certainly understand why she would be upset with you! Decided we will use the toll around Austin. We went to AAA today to get the tag, but it takes a few days to get the one for a motorcycle, so we will just let them send us the bill this time. Upon our return, I think I will order one for the bike and the car...I am sick of Austin traffic...hoping it will come in handy to get around Houston, too...what a nightmare that place is!

Heading up to Branson MO on Friday...really don't like the traffic going through Austin. Is it worth taking the toll road that goes around Austin? Does anyone know how much it would cost if you got on the first opportunity (from San Antonio) and staying on all the way to where it joins up again with I35? we will be riding the bike, pulling a trailer. appreciate any help you can offer.

Thank you, Brad:thumbsup2:

Once again I owe an expression of gratitude to Tom for not only ordering a part for my bike, but actually insisting on installing it for me...guess he has come to realize that I am somewhat of a klutz. This is not the first time he has done this. I don't know what constitutes an award for helping another biker...but Tom sure deserves one as he is always doing this for those of us on this site.. Thank you again, my Friend...hopefully someday I will have the opportunity to return the favor!

WOW...one of the many reasons I like this site so much...you all are fantastic!

Well said!

I guess the reason Yamaha doesn't make these changes is to keep the price down (relatively speaking)...I do enjoy the Wing, but if you check out the Wing sites, you will see people complaining about them as well...seems we are never happy with the offerings. The RSV is a great ride...stick to the positives about whatever you decide to take to the highway...life is too short to dwell on the negatives!

I hope with all my heart that this will not cause a commotion...if any of the moderators feel it will do so, please eliminate it. I hope it will not be construed as political...I see nothing political about honoring our heroes...particularly when they have made the ultimate sacrifice. God bless these young men and women, Semper Fi, and Way to Go, Mississippi! http://www.ihatethemedia.com/a-simple-way-to-stop-westboro-baptist-church-funeral-protesters
