headlight problem
Air Ready Auto replied to Air Ready Auto's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
So which one I the low beam terminal and what does the RLU look like and how would I know if it went bad? Also, none of my dash lights work and somebody did a bang up job wiring around my fuse box so I only have two fuses in there. One for the starter and one for something else I cant identify. -
So I had Lucy out for a few hour ride today. Put on about 140mi. About half way through the trip I start smelling something not quite right. I pull over and see some smoke wafting up from the fork area by the key hole. I check everything over and don't see anything noticeably wrong. I keep riding and the smell goes away. A little while later one of our boys in blue kindly let's me know my headlight is out. Hummm. My high beam works but the low one is out and when I switch to low the smoke and smell return. Any ideas on what to start with? A quick inspection of the wiring doesn't look like any frayed or shorted connections.

Why? Usually because my wife says I have to...

I quit when my oldest daughter told me I smelled bad... Been 2 years now. Still dip and enjoy the occasional cigar/pipe.

While in the Navy I was honored to work on the Phalanx Close In Weapons System. (Real FC type stuff.) In basic terms, Air Ready Auto is the setting you select on the weapons system when s*** hits the fan and you need to defend the ship no matter what. I am the oldest of 18 (11 brothers and 6 sisters) and I'm rather big -6'4" 240lb-. I come from a kind of broken family and I took the protection of my younger siblings very seriously... still do. My baby sister turned 18 a few months ago. She has this mid 20's guy sniffing around her. At her (high school) graduation party, I gave him a little box and told him to open it. He did and pulled out a bullet. I had him sign it, showed him my sniper qualification, took the bullet back and gently (kind of) explained to him that the next time he would see that bullet would be in the ER as the doctors removed it from his you-know-where. My sister rolled her eyes at me and said "Your just ready for anything". She has no idea what tactics I have planned for any little scum who ever gets near one of my daughters. -

Lucy seams to be running a little hot so I think I'm going to pull off both the thermostat and water pump and update both and replace the elbow. Does anybody know what the Napa numbers for the thermostat and seals are or where I can find them? I thought I saw them somewhere on this sight but I haven't been able to relocate them. -
Played Hookie and went for a ride today in Kananaskis Country

Slightly jealous. .. -
And yes I posted the pic because I know how much you love that home made food.

So this is what I came home to tonight. Mexican style almost gumbo. Wives may nag us but they do tend to take care of us better than we would take care of ourselves. Hang in there Mr Puck. Prayers are with you.

So.... I see that these bikes are devided into generations. What are the cutoffs and what are the advantages/disadvantages of each?

That's how we picked places to eat in Portugal. Find a fat guy leaning against a building by a door with bread in the window. Best way to find good eats.

So we all know what we like to eat right. What about new things? Why go to a new restaurant and get something that you know you will like that you could get the same old restaurant you always go to. Chicken is chicken everywhere. A few years ago I started doing something with amazing results. When the server hands us the menu, I hand it back and say "you pick for me." I give them an idea of how hungry I am and explain that I really hate mushrooms (can't get over the fact that they grow on poo) and ask them to surprise me. The results were that I discovered that I like a lot of different foods that I didn't even know existed. Sure I've had some dishes that weren't as tasty as others but over all, I've been pleased with the results. So I offer up the challenge to everybody. Expand your taste buds. Go out and don't order and be surprised.

From other reading I've done here, it seams that the shimmy should get worse at higher speeds but it is only at that 30-45 range that it does it. Also, I dont know if it makes a difference, but I took my father out on it today and it seamed to run a lot smoother down the road. Would the extra weight make a difference in the handeling? Does that help with diagnosing the problem?

Well Mr. Puck, I just posted another question in the 1st Gen section. I'm trying to talk my bride into exploring the U.P. for our anniversary. Are you up that way?

So my mother in law is coming up from Mexico in a few weeks. Awesome because her and the wife always get to cooking up a storm and my pants seam to shrink a bit... So, when I get the dates nailed down I will post it here. I have gotten a lot of help and advice with getting Lucy road ready so the least I can do is say thanks with food. A special thanks to Dano. I might have to do a special delivery to him when we are in Ohio visiting the other in laws.

Come on now boss. It isn't that ugly... There is a guy down the road from me who has a bunch of nighthawks. I could see if he would part with a cover.

Some of you read my struggles and know how Lucy got her name. Long story short, it involved the not so fun to remove flywheel. Shortly after contacting Dano and getting everything ready to send out for his master rebuild, my wife (who had no idea I had bought Lucy and a few parts for her) calls me and tells me that her car is now a paperweight. I check it out and it did indeed move on to the great highway in the sky. That lead to talks of a newer car and her checking our finances and,,, we'll me on the couch for a few nights/week. So Saturday I get home from work and there is a package for me. She tells me to open it. I do and there is a heavy duty starter clutch, gear and flywheel. I was more than a touch surprised. She tells me happy father's day and to go fix the bike so I can ride it by father's day. She had gotten with one of my buddies and bribed him with food to talk to me and figure out what parts I needed and ordered them. I love that woman. I have put about 80 miles on Lucy now and she is a dream to ride. So,,,,,, now the tech question. She is super quiet. I don't want her to sound like one of those obnoxious noise machines but a little more noise would be nice. Any suggestions? Also, does anybody have any experience with these heavy duty 6 pin starter clutches? I know they aren't as good as Dano's mod but will it at least last somewhat longish? P.s. my wife may have had an alternative motive for getting me the parts because she wound up with a much nicer/newer car than I had planned... still, I really love that woman.

:soapbox:So this is the story of my evil bike. First I can't get the cover off. The great Dano pm's me and I warn Lucy that I have the number of one of the greats. Magically the cover just decides to pop off. :confused:Then comes the epic battle I have read so much about. I hook up my heavy-duty puller and bust out the impact. Nothing. Had it tight almost to bolt breaking point. I sit back on my haunches and glare. That's when it decides to free up and deliver a hay maker to my baby maker.... So that's my story. I will be sitting on a bag of ice for a while...

Just remember, you jarheads are a branch of the navy:beer: I'm not blind to the irony that we always call on you guys to bail us out and it might just be you bailing me out of my mechanical inexperience with bikes. And I might not be able to ride into any fights after I tell my wife that I bought this and she brakes my neck...
