got this image off the internet http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff132/dddouble/Misc/API_donut.gif note the text in the bottom of some of the doughnuts say "energy conserving" Don't put oil in your engine that has the text "energy conserving" on it!!!! You wont like what it does to your wet clutch that shares that oil......

Most GL-5 gear oils have some Moly in them...but not much. Schaeffer 80W–90 Supreme Synthetic Gear Lube Has LOTS of moly, but is not a synthetic base. Bibb tools has it HERE I want Schaeffer Moly Full Synthetic Gear Lube (#167) but it is not packaged in less than a 38 Lb pail.... Mr Moly makes an additive HERE I could not find any product locally (I might have checked the truck stops but did not) and was going to change the rear tire out, so I could not wait for the mail to deliver some. When I had my rear tire off for replacement I lubed the splines with some Honda Moly60 paste and put a little bit in the rear end with some Amsoil synthetic gear oil. About the size of a pea. Look in THIS thread for more info. BTW do NOT use gear oil with Moly in a limited slip rear end like in some cars. The moly will attack the copper in the plates...

I got 36 miles out of mine on the milage counter... I was just about out.. Riding two up on flat roads.

You might want to find some gear oil with Molybdenum Disulphide in it for the rear end of your bike. It will make the gears run quieter and make them and the bearings in the rear end last longer.

That is close.... I fill mine half way up the sight glass. I have read here at the fourms that if you fill it to the top of the glass, you mihgt get blow by out of the crank case vents. I have not measured the volume of oil required to fill the filter an the sight glass to the half way point.

Magnetic Oil Drain Plug
KiteSquid replied to Hulk's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I purchased my crush washers at my local auto parts store in a box of 25 for under $4. They fit the oil drain and rear end drain and fill (three places) on my RSV and they also fit the oil drain on both of my Honda cages, and the oil drain on my Honda powered pressure washer. They had to special order them, and it took a while, but that is inexpensive per washer. Does anybody know what Dorman products magnetic oil plug fits on the 2nd Gen RSV? They are available at my local auto parts stores. -
Check the idle speed before Carbtune

Most auto parts stores sell clip on tachometers for testing. You might try your local Harbor Freight (HF) store if you want a cheep tool, sold inexpensively. HERE is a HF multimeter with a tachometer and temperature probe for $35, but I try for coupons or sales at HF. To me, HF = Caveat emptor -

My fix was to grease the drive shaft splines with Honda Moly60 paste. Click HERE to go to that tread -

I just read on page 3-24 of the service manual that the torque spec for the oil filter is 17 NM (12 ft-Lb)!!!!!!!! I usually go by the tightening spec on the box the filter comes in. Like stated by V7Goose above, when the gasket first touches tighten it 1/2 - 3/4 turn and NO MORE!!!!!

Decided not to buy 2007 venture
KiteSquid replied to Bobcatpat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I bought my 2007 RSV in July of 2007 for $13,900. They are going for about $13,500 right about now....... Total depreciation of $400 for 14 months of ownership. Your mileage may vary. -
The most accurate carb tuner is a mercury manometer. For us, a four tube mercury manometer makes the process easier as you can hook up all four carbs at one time and make adjustments and see instantly the results. You also can use a set of gauges or a steel rod in an air cylinder like the Morgan Carbtune, but they may have inaccuracies as they are mechanical devices, unlike the column of mercury in a manometer. The problem with a mercury manometer is the EPA wants to lower the amount of mercury that is spilled into the environment. this is very good of them. So most manufacturers have stopped making mercury manometers. But I have found a source of good old fashioned "Carb Sticks" for $55. A lot lower priced than MOST of the other tools on the market, and MUCH more accurate, as mercury cannot go out of calibration. Just don't spill it and DON'T PLAY WITH IT!!!! http://www.saber-cycle.com/store/media/parts/08-010.jpg (Click-able image)

I would add a rellay bright LED headlamp. The type that goes on your head insted of a flashlihgt to free up your hands and the lihgt goes where you need it, not where your helper points it. I recomend the one from River Rock at Target for about $25 It is also sold as the Rayovac High Beam™ K2 LED Headlight

YAWN..... I am too far from retirement to care what the market does today.... Just like the cover of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy says in big friendly letters: DON'T PANIC

At least one bike in the Ride Like A Pro V DVD has a brake light that strobes for a few seconds and then stays on steady. I think this would be a better setup. Does anybody know of a unit that would control LEDs that I already have installed that costs $10 or less?

2002 RSV fork lowering

I lowered mine, and did not like it, so I put it back to stock!!!!!! -
Once again, I recommend using Camp Fuel to bring the price down. Click HERE to see Seafoam's web site on where to buy it... an alternative is to use Coleman, or other brand of Camp Fuel at about 50% the concentration that you would use Seafoam as it does not have the alcohol that Seafoam has. I found this at www.answers.yahoo.com After reading the MSDS for both products, I would have to agree and have stopped buying Seafom and will use Camp Fuel to clean my fuel system.

Pure-One PL14612 vs PL14610 & fit?
KiteSquid replied to frogmaster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
You have to take the rear tire off to lube the splines as you have to remove the drive shaft to get to the front spline. The procedure is in the service manual. I would recommend Honda Moly60 on all the splines!!!!!!!!!!!! I try to do all of my own wrenching as who would probably do a better job, the mechanic on a time clock or the person who rides the machine? It is also a relaxing activity for me as I drive a desk all day at work. flb_78 , Thanks for the photo of the cut open filter!!!!!
