Lowering front of genII Venture
KiteSquid replied to JerryK's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I did not notice a big difference with the bike on the kick stand when the front of my bike was lowered. No need to modify the kick stand, if you lower just the front of you bike.. I cannot comment if you lower the front and rear, as I did not do it to my bike. -
Once I get good, my goal is to practice with MrsSquid on the bike too.... Riding that way two up has got to be a BLAST!!!!! Scraping boards at 1.5 MPH!!!!! WOOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have eaten raw horse meat, sheep's brains with garlic cooked in olive oil, and lots of "monkey meat on a stick" Jelly Fish was kinda flavorless. Fresh water eel is good!!!!!!! And many things that I could not identify, durring my 20 years in the US Navy..... However I have never eaten a balut. Search the Internet for this taste treat!!!!

Lowering front of genII Venture
KiteSquid replied to JerryK's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I did not change the tire until about 2000 miles after I raised it back up. The replacement tire is a Avon Venom in the stock size. I cannot think of any other variables.... but thanks for making me re-think the process. -
Lowering front of genII Venture
KiteSquid replied to JerryK's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I did the mod correctly, and I torqued the head bearings with a claibrated torque wrench. 20 Years in the US Navy showed me the value of calibrated measuring tools. It appears that I am the only one who has reported a speed wobble after doing the mod, so it must be an isolated case or if it happened to someone else, they did not report it. I have not had a wobble after un-modding my front end. I recomend that you lower you bike as a last resort. get your seat modded to lower it or better yet, narrow it, so those with shorter inseames can flat foot when the bike is stopped. One probelm with lowering any bike is you decrease the maximum lean angle, which increases the minimum turning radius. IF you need to lean the bike way over to avoid a collision, you might run out of turning radius..... Just a warning. RIDE SAFE!!!!!!!! -
Lowering front of genII Venture

I lowered mine by 1" in an effort to make it handle more quickly. There are some instructions posted here that do not have you take apart the triple tree. Rode it for about a week. Got a speed wobble. Raised it back to stock. Learned from my mistake and decided to LEARN how to properly ride a bike. Purchased the DVDRide Like a Pro V and the book Proficient Motorcycling and attended a MSF motorcycle rider course. Best money I ever spent!!!!!!! -
Interesting thoughts..... I wonder what percent of the Royal Star motorcycles are made in the US, in Japan and in China?????????? I bet that Yamaha does not want to post those numbers... Just because the motorcycles are assembled in Japan, does not mean all the parts came from there, but I think that US law states that this info be available to the consumer, but I cant find it on the Internet....

Headlight bulb........
KiteSquid replied to BoomerCPO's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
For the headlamp get the Piaa Intense White bulbs!!!!!! OUTSTANDING VALUE and great light!!!! For the brake and turn use 2357 or 2357NA as applicable. More light than the 1157 series bulbs. read THIS thread for more info But if you can afford it, get the LED turn and brake bulbs. -
Read and re-read the book I watch the DVD on a monthly basis.... Share with local friends....

I would read the book Proficant Motorcycleing watch the DVD Ride Like a Pro V and attend a MSF save rider course, to learn what I did wrong, AND to try to avoid other mistakes. Learn from the pros!!!!!

Two ways. you can get on the list to receive a copy that is being mailed around the county that either Friesman1, jburrell or KiteSquid gave away. This might take a while. OR if you cant wait MONTHS to receive the copy above, you can click HERE and order a copy. if you tell them you are a member a VetureRider.com forum they will discount it.... I recommend buying a copy!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also, once you have viewed it, please post back to this thread what you have learned!!!!!!!

Alternate location for driving lights (2nd gen)
KiteSquid replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
It is all about beam shape. Wide is passing. Narrow is driving. There is so much confusion on Fog lamps that I wont even go there. Where you mount them on a motorcycle is up to the owner, with the exception that you by federal law (that I have yet to see enforced) you cannot install any lamps above the headlamp. It makes sense to install any lamps as high as you can and it is esthetically pleasing to install the lamps on the horizontal center-line of the headlamp. Driving lamps should be installed high due to shadows on the road, but I have seen them at the bottom of the forks on some bikes. I cant find the Federal law right now, but there is a lot about lamp placement on vehicles.... -
I agree with most posters above, Honda Moly60 is the ONLY way to go!!!! Expensive, but worth it. It is 3 Oz of grease in a 6 Oz tube, so don't be scared when it is only half full. IF your local Honda dealer does not stock it, that tells you something about their service department.

Alternate location for driving lights (2nd gen)
KiteSquid replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
No I'm not. Passing lamps have a wide lower intensteny beam when copmaird to the narrow and very bright beam of driving lamps. I would try to mount Driving lamps as high as possiable to cut down the size of the shadows that can be made by low mouned lamps. Look at rally cars, they put lamps on the roof, so the lamps are above the driver's head, so there are no "black holes" made by the shadows of the beams. of cours this is not possiable to mount driveng lamps on the top you your helmet, but that IMHO would be the best place for them from the driver's point of view but bad for other direvers on the road. AND you dont want the mass on your helmet. Passing lamps can be mounted low, to make a triangel of light to make your bike more visable to other drivers, they dont help you with the shadows they make, but would help light up the sides of the road. -
winterizing tips
KiteSquid replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Ethanol will bond with the water, so it cannot set in the bottom of the tank and rust it out, which has happened on many motorcycles. the Ethanol is more corrosive than gassoline, but you cant get away from it in today's market. you don't want to store your tank dry, as moisture in the air will rust the inside of your tank, unless you live in a place like Pima Arizona where the humidity hits about 3 to 7% most of the time........ You either have to keep the tank full of gas, or you have to coat it with something like Kreem or you have to seal it up with some humeticant to keep it from rusting. the inside of your tank is bare metal. I do agree with your thoughts on Ethanol on the gaskets in the carb, but you will get a light coat of varnish on the carb when you let it dry out... So it is a catch 22 at best. I should do more research on storing motorcycles with modern fuels............ -
Cut down windshield

An alternative to cutting your windshiled is to keep it clean, and coat it with sometiing like RejeX or ACE it! -
winterizing tips
KiteSquid replied to Sideoftheroad's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
We went for a nice ride this past Saturday... I would recommend closing the fuel petcock for storage, but leave the carbs full of fuel with stabilizer in it. Pour in some Seafoam or to save some money, use Camp Fuel and some fuel stabilizer in your fuel over winter. Store the tank full or remove it and use some Kreem in it (make sure you remove the fuel level sender first!!!!!) to keep the tank from rusting. Most fuel you buy today has about 10% ethanol in it, so moisture is usually not a problem. -

I cant find it but IIRC it is a federal law that "passing lamps" come on with the low beams and turn off with the high beams. It might take some relays and extra switches, but you should be able to pass, and have the lights operate the way you want them to. BTW if the inspector gives you a copy of the rules, please post them here for the rest of us in VA.
