I have two torque wrenches to cover 99% of my torque requirements. Both are the click type with reattaching heads, as I am efficient, not lazy.... When I was on Active Duty in the US Navy, whenever we performed maintenance, we had to assure that the test equipment (in this case torque wrench) was calibrated and that the certification was in date... So, if you can get your torque wrenches calibrated, you will have a more accurate torque.............. mine are. HOWEVER this can be an expensive service. If you buy H-F tools, make sure you get them on sale... as H-F sells cheap tools, inexpensively.

Click HERE to got to the National Park Service Pass information page. I have the Access Pass due to my 20% Veterans Administration (VA) Disability. I don't have a VA ID card as I don't use their facilaties so I used my Disability letter to get my pass. I just had to sign a form for the Park Ranger and was issued the pass in just a few minutes. Here is what it looks like: http://www.nps.gov/PWR/templates/images/graphics/AccessFRT.jpg I use it for free access to Skyline Drive whenever I go up there...

16K Mile maintenence...How Much?
KiteSquid replied to Richb's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I agree with all the above. Side note: When I was young I would figure what the maintenance cost me to do, and what the dealer would charge, take half the difference and buy Craftsman hand tools with it. In about 5 years I stopped buying tools as there were none that I needed....... I had a full set.... -
You did, and that looks like a great deal!!!!!!!!!!! I know that is were I will buy it in the future!!!! I was looking at the dry Molybdenum disulphide for a non motorcycle application.
-
Regretablly I could not find Molybdenum Disulphide Peder at that website. Also, for our use, Molybdenum Disulphide should already be in an oil carrier as it MIGHT fall out of suspension. I have heard of this when people have tired adding Molybdenum Disulphide to the crank case of their automobiles (NEVER DO THIS IN A WET CLUTCH APPLICAIONT LIKE THE ROYAL STAR MOTORCYLES) and ended up with it only coating the bottom of the oil pan. I think Honda likes it in a paste grease form is so it will stick in place a little.
-
I have shopped and shopped, and the Honda Moly60 is the best value for a 50% or higher molybdenum disulfide content grease in less quantity than a 55 gallon drum..... Get some and share it with a friend. spoon some into an old medicine bottle or other container, but make SURE to mark it properly for MSDS purposes!!!!!! If you think Moly60 is high priced at aobut $10 for 3 Oz, look at DuPont Krytox grease, but I cant get past the price..... 2 Oz for $85.66
-
There are others, but this is the best value for the container size, unless you need 55 gallons or more... You should use 60% moly or better, the stuff you see in the auto parts stores is about 3-5%. There are also some aerosols that contain Moly, but I dont know the percentage. a good article on spline lubes is HERE
-
I used the part number provided by BigBoyinMS and searched the Internet and came up with a low price of $6.85 HERE, but the shipping charges for one part would be a deal breaker!!!! Print the page and take it to your local Honda CAR dealership to see if they will match the price. My local Honda CAR dealership parts counter will come close to or will match prices I bring in...... BTW 3 Oz of Moly60 is a LIFETIME supply!!!!! Buy a tube and give some to the members of your local bike clubs.

Vmax gears in RSV Question
KiteSquid replied to Reaney in NH's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have not rebuilt a final drive in a motrcycle, but if you have rebuilt a rearend before, this should be easy enough. I note that you said: A printed manual is nice, but the service manual is offered for FREE in PDF format here on this forum. Look to the left column and you will see a link for VRTech Click it and then click on the 2nd Gen link and you will see a place to download it. WARNING it is about 13 Megabytes. I normally print the individual pages I need and throw them out when the job is done, as I usully will gunk them up in the shop... While you are in the VRTech section, also download the parts book for some GREAT assembly drawings AND a complete parts list. Back to the rear gear swap, The service manual calls out two special tools are needed... I wish you good luck if you don't buy these tools as you might have some issues. Final drive shaft holder, YM-01229, 90890-01229 Final drive shaft bearing retainer wrench, YM-04050, 90890-04050 Also do yourself a favor and get some Honda Moly60 grease for the splines of the drive shaft, the splines that connect the final drive to the rear wheel and use some on the fingers of the "clutch hub" that connects to the rear wheel. PLEASE do us a favor and write up a tech article to post in the VRTech section, especally anyting you did to get around using the special tools............. -

Mechanical Three-Gauge Water Temp. / Oil Press. / Volt Three-Gauge Water Temp. / Oil Press. / Volt Oil Pressure, Ammeter, Water Temp, at Jeg's -

BTW make sure you get the 1-1/2" gauge set.... I saw a Sunpro gauge set in 2"...... I don't think they would fit as well. -

Rear tire has to come off....... sorry.... I lubricated my splines and drive fingers (part of the Clutch Hub) when I replaced my rear tire the first time.

Here in Virginia there is an annual safety inspection so most of the bike dealers sell stainless steel tags that you bolt onto your bike and put the decal on it. I got a second one, for my base sticker..... the gate guards here see them this way all the time.
-
I brought my VA disability letter to an entrance to a National Park that issued them (I called ahead to verify as not all ranger stations issue passes) and that is all it took. I showed up on my RSV with five of my fellow disabled Veterans and they got their passes too........
-
They offer a free LIFETIME pass called an Access Pass to anybody with disiabliltys. I have a 20% disiability from the Vetrans Adminstration, and got mine that way. EVERYONE in the car or bike gets in free too....... More info HERE. It is ran by the USGS but works in LOTS of places!!!!!

Once you have the final drive off of the bike, the drive shaft will pull out of the tube. there are splines on the front of the drive shaft also.... No, it comes out after removing a large C clip. IIRC there is a photo essay in the VRTech section, and in the service manual. Regrettably I don't have time right now to look it up....soorry. My local multi-brand dealer that carries Honda's had to order it as they did not have any on the shelf, that leads me to believe that the mechanics there do not use it....... therefore they will not touch my bike with any tool!!!!!!
