I sent an email to that guy to get his videos. Sounds like a great resource for a few bucks. CabTune should be here Monday and I can try and get them dialed in. I love the earplug idea on the vents...I will be trying that for sure. I have a parts bike, so I can see if either of them have a better mirror to swap in, otherwise its aftermarket. lol. Thanks for all the help so far.

I got a few more miles on today. got plates and insurance handled to make it legal Still seems good so far, again, I am not roaming too far from home. Bought Carbtune off ebay....should get in a few days. In the short term... 1. still no cruise. need to research that 2. Vents on the legs will not stay open....and tricks for that 3. left mirror is loose or something. When I adjust it, once wind gets it, it moves down 4. when cold...it idles just over 1,000. When hot its much higher. My thought is the idle should be adjusted to idle at the right rpms while warm right? Should I do this before the carbtune gets here, or as its sync'd? overall, it is so much more fun to ride and handles better than the 2010 Harley Street Glide i was using before. This weekend I did 200 miles on that Harley and it just made me want this to where I felt comfortable on longer distances.

hot weather riding...helmet and clothing

What about boots? I always wear my old combat boots from the Marines with steal toes. Is that ok? Is there anything really special about "motorcycle boots" ? -

Let me know what you think of the LS2. I was looking at that very helmet as well. Some people are not fans of the modular ones...I am not sure why not though -
hot weather riding...helmet and clothing
mcompton1973 replied to mcompton1973's topic in Watering Hole
I have no intention of riding without a helmet. I have a full face one now, but a cheaper one. Its hot...no other way to say it. lol. What do you think of your mesh jacket? Can you wear something like that over a t-shirt? I work in khaki shorts and a polo...(sales) wondering if I wore mesh if I could wear it right over my work cloths? I am in Oklahoma...so 80-100 is pretty much normal temps. That said, almost zero stop and go...its an hour of highway to work and an hour back. -
OK, So one of my fears when I got my 1st gen bike was with all the fairings etc...riding in the hot weather. I am wondering what kind of helmet you wear, and what kind of protective clothing do you ride in. right now I ride in a 3/4 helmet....but its hot (it was also super cheap) I like the protection of full face...but do better brands allow more air flow?

I really kind of felt like it was a battery thing with the hot start....the cables makes since. I wasnt really thinking it was related....nor a BIG problem. I do NOT have one....but the carbotune is kind of what I was thinking of getting as well. I think I should do that...adjust idle...and see what happens maybe. I need to pull the airbox off when its hot and see whats going on with vents etc before I make that call 100%

OK. Today was the first time I have been able to get out and ride the bike and try to see what was going on. Ive dont nothing to it because I just wanted to recreate the problem. I started it up, rode to town and got gas. about 16 miles at 65mph. (cruise is not working...blech) Stopped at gas station, fully expecting it to not start once I got it filled. It started fine. Rode it home another 16 miles and parked it. No real problems. Smells to me like a little unburned fuel in the garage, perhaps running rich. Also the idle is up between 1500 and 2000 rpms. Seems like its in bad tune. Let it sit 20 minutes. Still no problem starting it. (there is a slight hesitation when I first hit the start button...like its not quite strong enough to get through that first compression stroke...then its fine) I am not seeing the issues he had. I have NOT done anything to the bike. Like I said...its in bad tune. Carbs are not sync'd for sure. I kind of wonder if I should just try to adjust the carbs then sync the carbs and ride it.

I can test this...I could get it good and hot, and see what happens, and add fuel and see if that helps. Might be able to tell even just if I feel pressure released when I open the fuel cap. I will check the pumps and compare that, and see if I can get see differences. I will also check venting on the carbs and the tank. I will post more this weekend when I have a chance to really test a few things.

ok. I have my new to me '86 which is a gorgeous machine....but has a weird carb (or not carb issue) that has been detailed on here by the previous owner. Basically when good and hot, if you shut it down the carbs will overflow when you try to start it again. part of me wonders if this is actually a fuel pump issue. (had a jeep with a fuel pump go bad...wasnt a lot different symptoms) I am thinking that it would be worth the time to replace it regardless. 1. Any good "how to" on that. 2. I have seen a 'Mr Gasket' fuel pump....is that what I need to buy? Also, I now have a donor bike. another '86 Royale. It hasnt been titled in 4 years. I was told stator or something similar is wrong. I MIGHT at some point try to get it running (it has a title...lol) for now, it is parts bike. If I DO try to get it running, it would have to be a rat rod project. Missing much plastic, and over all rougher condition. Because the carbs on my bike have been a problem, was thinking of cleaning the ones off the parts bike....see also if that helps the issue. I have found this in the other sites tech library http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=001010&id=366 1. Is that the best how too, or is there videos or something else I should look into? 2. Is the ebay carb kit going to be what I need for parts, or is there something better? 3. Anything else I should do when I have carbs off etc?

I contacted him. 100% good to send carbs to him except he doesnt think it is a carb issue. Here is my conversation with him today. me: " got the bike here today. Starts up surprisingly well. My understanding is that it will run pretty good until it gets warm. Then it wants to flood. Specifically when he would try to start the bike while warm it would overflow fuel. Apparently it started this after running some Sea Foam through the tank. My question to you. How confident are you that this would be a carb problem" Dan: "Hey Mike, From the way you describe it, that doesn't sound like a carb problem at all. Unless it's something weird like a valve or ring issue, altho I'm not sure how they could affect it like you describe. I can't think of anything that would cause the fuel to overflow like that. Danny

I have an '83 standard that I was keeping for parts. My new bike is an '86 Venture and the plastic is all great, so I would sell my fairing or whatever else you might need. Its is white...and needs repainted probably anyways...No hard sell, just let me know if you have an interest. As for the rest. Have fun. I am pretty new myself...and I love this bike (although the riding position is a change for me...)

no one try to buy it out from under me....lol Black with the gold or bronze inserts. $1200 with the carb issues. 37k miles. My thought was what you said. I think a lot of the pricey stuff is done. the windshield is pristine, some scratches on the fairing (my guess, set down in a parking lot...its not that bad. I think I would rather screw with carb issues than a lot of other things. I will probably just work with the carbs it has. I thought if it was the same....cool. If not, rather than try to force it....I will just fix them. Carbs are not all THAT complicated. Cant be to hard to fix....and if they are...I remember a vmax guy that rebuilds carbs, synchs, tunes etc and sends them to you....I will still come out ahead. lol.

OK, well. I said I was going to buy another one, and I have settled on price with a guy. Bike iis 10 hours away. He has done several things to it... 1. All fresh fluids 2. new Dunlop Elite 3 tires 3. New Progressive fork springs 4. New fork seals and wipers 5. Rebuilt brake calipers 6. New EBC brake pads (front and rear) 7. Fresh valve adjustment 8. New valve cover gaskets 9. New Polk waterproof marine grade stereo speakers 10. CLASS electronic suspension system professionally repaired (air suspension works great) Now...he said it was having intermittent flooding issues...so he pulled carbs cleaned them including new o rings, gaskets, needles and seats. Said he put them back on and it didnt help. says " carbs vent a bit of fuel after shut down when its hot" says he can start and run it, but idle is racing and then it has the flooding. question 1. Where would you start with the carbs? question 2. I have 83 standard carbs....will they work? carbs were cleaned and working, but the idiot lost the linkage for choke cable and such.

I have a couple of the bikes you tagged in the Denver area on my list. I live near Tulsa OK, and there isnt anything around local. Denver, and Omaha/Lincoln area have a couple. Getting there would be a pain....8 hour ride back on a bike I dont know would be interesting. lol. Are the 1300's less "sporty" or is it really just a top speed thing? I am not a sport bike guy, so it probably wont matter to me much, just trying to understand the differences. -
ok, so last year I ended up with a venture on a trade. '83 standard. I let someone else work on it and now it is yard art. I was determined to put it back on the road....but now I cant locate title which was never in my name. So now it is my new parts bike. lol. I really like the bike, the look, so I just decided I will buy another one...only this time I think I will get the Royale (cruise would be nice) Questions: 1. It appears that the 83/84 were more sporty? These are the best years? 2. is there a way to verify if the 2nd gear was fixed? 3. If it has bad 2nd gear (there is one local) just how bad and expensive is it really if I do the work? 4. I am guessing with bad 2nd gear the bike isnt worth much ($500? $1000? More?) 5. Anything else I can look at or ask about to make sure I dont have issues later? 6. How many miles before I should start worrying about "high" miles?
