I was honored this morning to attend the retirement ceremony for Sargeant First Class Wilkinson, known to us here as SapperMedic. He leaves the U.S. Army after 25 years of service as a Combat Medic. Wilkie- thanks for your years of service and I hope you enjoy your riding season this year. I miss seeing your 1986 parked around the corner. Mocha is going to feel lonely when I get back to riding. Don't know-can't see it from here. However, I want a Frst Gen trike for someday. I like the looks of them. Gotta have a home for the V-Max parts in the cupboard:) JB

fan motor relay
lonestarmedic replied to wolfmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Do you need an original relay or something that will fit and work? I can research the original and see if there is an automotive counterpart. Or you can wire in a normal 5 pin 30 amp Bosch relay. Those are common. They come in most fog/driving light kits. You can even get a socket for them at the auto parts store. JB -
Need a part
lonestarmedic replied to kbran's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Kbran- Guess I have a case of dumbitis. Do you need the switch? I have a couple spares. I also have a 1986 parts bike. Kickstand intact so I am sure it has what you need. Could be yours if needed. Comes with genuine 1st Gen oil drips from the stator cover gasket!! Pre oiled for preservation ya know!. JB -
Roadwarrior- Just 1 wife and a daughter. Wife doesn't need them. I will think about triple-stacking for the daughter!!! Squeeze- I think the reliability should be good. I was able to check the chemical composition of the rubber material. It is a very stable and fuel resistive compound. Not a normal butyl rubber or a stiff viton. It is a flouro compound. JB

I received confirmation from Mr. Sakae and Yoshi. They sent me pictures of an SD-1 diaphragm fitted to a V-Max carburetor. Assembly number 1FK-14901-01 . Also heard from Gereon at the German facility. He is fitting the SD-1 to the Venture carburetors. Venture from 1983-1993 is a go. Now, if Lutz (Squeeze) can verify the years on the V-max we are set for supplies in the USA, Canada, and Europe. As to the dimension difference, I guess something gets lost in translation Go get-em Reiny!!! JB

I put in for 3 sets. If this works well, I will front for 3 sets (12 diaphragms) beyond my own stock and hold them for folks in the area that might need them. JB

Well, the gentleman in Kitchener is A-1 in my book. He has sent several e-mails to me this evening concerning the size discrepancy. Heck, he has offered to send me a diaphragm to measure for myself!! I suggested that he and ReinyRooster do the measuring. If they can't agree then I would buy 4 of them then measure and install them. He measured the diaphragms at 30mm inside. If this is correct, we have a good source for the diaphragms. And, if you check the website, they have other carb parts that we might need. I repeat, Sirius Consolidated, Inc. is a class act. Martin has went way above and beyond to make sure things will be right. JB

When you talk to the folks over there, ask for Martin Mattes. He is the gentleman that my contact in Japan had been working with. Martin sent me an e-mail today and I indicated that someone local would be contacting him. JB

Here is a reply on the diaphragm that I posted to TimGrey concerning the SD1 kit. It may help to shed some light on the subject: Tim Be careful here. I checked with the manufacture of the Keyster diaphragm. They state that the measurements are 74mm O.D. by 28mm I.D. and do not fit the Venture. The eBay Canada site for SiriusConInc. lists the SD1 as being 72mm O.D. by 28mm I.D. and does not have the Venture listed as taking the SD1 kit. The eBay U.S. seller, MotoAllParts lists the Venture diaphragm he sells as being 72mm O.D. by 30mm I.D. The only ones that have been reported on thus far are the ones from MotoAllParts. They may indeed all come back to the same manufacturer. And, they may all fit fairly well. However, An incorrect O.D. will cause the needle to sit in its seat either too shallow or too deep. An incorrect I.D. may cause the slide to become off-centered in the bore. http://cgi.ebay.ca/YAMAHA-XS650-XJ900-XS750-XS1100-CARB-SLIDE-DIAPHRAGM_W0QQitemZ220348980562QQihZ012QQcategoryZ 35597QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1713.m153. l1262 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DIAPHRAGM-YAMAHA-XV535-VIRAGO-XVZ12-XVZ13-VENTURE-ROYAL_W0QQitemZ270342324033QQihZ017QQcategoryZ3559 7QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Excerpt of an e-mail from Japan: Dear Joe, Your msg has been passed to us since we are an export agent of Keyster carb kits & parts for SCI who is our distributor in USA/Canada market. We have now piston diaphragm - SD1 and SD2 only. SD1 O/D I/D 74 mm x 28 mm SD2 72 mm x 26 mm Our SD1 is for XS650/1100, XJ900 not for V-MAX, XVZ12/13. I will discuss with xxxxxxxxxx. If you think that great demand for these models could be expected, pls ask xxxxxxxx to make the new piston diaphragm for these models. Regards M. Yoshisaka Nagoya Trading Machinery Co., Ltd. Gentlemen, I cannot read German that well. However, I have been talking to Keyster in Japan. As they have indicated that they do not currently offer the diaphragm by itself I would like to know what SCI and Motorrad are selling. It also brings in my mind the question of what is the eBay store selling? And, where is he getting them if not Keyster? The diaphragms on eBay sometimes sell for almost $120.00 not including shipping. I asked about less than $100.00 delivered to your doorstep. It will probablr be much less than that but I cannot tell. The assembled slides go for about $70-$80 each. Sometimes more than that depending on the distributor. Other diaphragms alone list at $25-$30 each before shipping. Looks like I stuck my nose in a hornets nest this time. I will discontinue my investigation on the diaphragms. JB

When I speak of the diaphragm I am referring to the rubber section only. No slide, needle or other items. This is like the item we have seen on eBay. I was under the impression that there were a reasonable amount of members who wanted to work with the original slide and just replace the rubber. I am not sure who the company is that Rick is referring to. If they offer the diaphragm, then my job is done and Rick can just let us know where to find them. JB

Ok folks, I got a response from Japan this evening. The company does not currently offer the diaphragm by itself. The SD1 and SD2 sets are not exactly the right size according to the manufacturer. However, based upon my request they are going to look into adding them to the line-up. I offered to purchase 100 sets of course based upon end pricing. I figure we can easily use those up if the quality is good. Now, I need a bit of research help from owners of other Yamahas. 1) Do all 1983-1993 Ventures use the same diaphragm? (I think yes except maybe the 1983) 2) What years of V-Max will these fit? I suspect 1985- almost current) 3) Is the base diaphragm the same on the 2nd Generation? 4) I see the eBay guy lists the 535 as also using these - what else may use them? For our folks in Canada and Europe - what useage would you have? If I can keep the price down to $100.00 U.S. delivered to the 48 states would it fly? I will need some numbers from y'all to make this happen. No promises here JB

Bargin Battery
lonestarmedic replied to FROG MAN's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The probe is a sensor that works the low battery light in the computer display. Either get a battery that you can put the probe into or do a search and find the bypass with the resistors JB -
I have always loved the styling of the 1st Gen. Even when I owned Gold Wings. I have ridden the 2nd Gen and wasn't comfortable with the handling. It has a great look and undoubtably the best luggage appearance. With that said, I realize my 1986 is OLD. It will run for many years to come. But, anything that breaks or fails is up to me to repair. My worst fear is loosing something electrical far from home. Can't drop by Yamaha and pick up a coil etc. So, sometime in the future I will purchase an additional ride. My 1986 will always be there-no plans to ever sell her. I guess my rambling point is that as a long distance machine, I do worry if I am running 2 up on the 1986. I can stand doing repairs and calling for help. But, if we are on vacation as a couple, it sure could ruin the trip. JB

Trying to hit the source. I have a contact in Japan. Hopefully he can translate and we can go direct. My idea is to actually import a supply of these. JB

Ok - If we need a spot to park these, I would be willing to head up the posse. Just send me a PM with the company and any contact info. If we can swing a deal, I would be willing to put a few sets in stock on my shelf. JB

Download the Malwarebytes program onto a thumb drive etc from an uninfected machine. Shut off your wife's computer and restart in safe mode with networking. With networking should allow the MW program to access the internet for updates before it starts running. Load the program and install it from the thumb drive.Choose the scan that does the most complete job. Such as all of c:\ Hopefully this will allow it to remove the S.O.B. Then run Spybot S and D for good measure. To get to safe mode, hit the F8 key right before the Starting Windows comes up. You might need to try a few times to hit it. Just start tapping F8 repeatedly - it wont hurt a thing. It took me a few hours to clean one of these critters off of a members machine one afternoon. I ended up going in manually and cleaning the Registry. Good luck JB

Missed You Guys.. - Crimson Knight

Glad to see you again. I understand priorities. I drop off the face of the earth once in a while. Last look I had was your bike sitting in the parking lot in Athens. Drop me a PM, I have done a few things with a bike cam etc. Also need a pic of you next to your bike. It will replace the empty spot in the Stampede presentation. Looking forward to riding with you soon. JB Consider yourself flamed for the MIA -
Try this www.lazerstar.net It should re-direct to weekend concepts. I think they are the outlet for these. I saw a set a while back. Looked like the Kuryakyn MR16 bulbed lights. JB

Here is a good thread on transistorized ignition.
lonestarmedic replied to Ivan's topic in Watering Hole
Those gentlemen are correct. A case in point is a certain computer we have all read about. It wasn't really on fire. It was just over-worked and vomited all the magic smoke. The melting is a result of the exothermic reaction of the smoke particles with the PVC compound insulating the wires. JB- 4 replies

I got in touch with the seller and offered a group type buy or the possibility of contacting the moderators for a spot on our site. Here is what I got back. At this time I cannot get more than 1 set per week. The supply is exceedig the demand. He does not have a buy it now price. So, I suggest that we consider a spot on the forum for "Need this item from a vendor on eBay" I have seen this before on websites. I understand the desire not to drive the price of an item up. I also understand that competition is what makes eBay work. I leave this up to the moderators and how they might want to handle this. I want a set of these for later in the spring. So, I will not be bidding until the end of February. JB

So, as a practicing Paramedic and retired fire captain, I want to thank you for keeping my job secure. I bet I could now get all the Texas folks together and hold a CPR/AED class and make a few bucks. I was worried I might have to run to Houston and help TxVenture get running again. Or try and FIND BuddyRich's house and give him a jumpstart. DON-you one funny guy. (Perverted but funny) JB

Has Anyone Heard From TupperJ Lately?!?!
lonestarmedic replied to skydoc_17's topic in Watering Hole
Earl- I have the huge hex crimpers, a pile of 4 gauge cable and lugs. I could make these cables. I would need to pull a set off of the wrecked 1986 out back and measure them. I also have red and black heat shrink. I make all of my own cables. Used to do a lot of electrical work on fire trucks and ambulances. I'll give someone else a chamce to jump in. If not give me a yell and we will get a set made. Just need to revisit the design and look at the smaller (10 gauge) accessory and charging cables. JB
