Battery Cable upgrade
lonestarmedic replied to Trader's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have paid my subscription so I can reply. I gave up on the cable project after receiving notes via a hotmail and a gmail account. I was told I was not welcome on this site. Seems I charge too much for cables and make cheap stuff. Now, in order to get my private e-mail it had to be a paid member. Ticked me off. I always thought I made a good product. Spent time to buy in bulk and get the best price. Even gave away a set or two. Like most folks, I even give away parts. I have about $350.00 worth of cable parts under my bench. Figured to sell all of it on e-bay or something. Did not really care. A nice member from Canada asked for a set this week. So, I am going to send them. Right now, I have a bum arm and cannot run a crimper well. Haven't ridden since June. Should be better soon. Now that I have let my temper de-fuse, I will get back to making cables. I will make them up then offer them for sale. It is a labor of love not profit. JB- 23 replies

Hello to all. We are finally back online. The last 2 months have been a wreck. Readers digest version: Computers (plural) down. One new computer purchsed. One truck sent to boneyard and one car purchased. Maggie now has a 2001 Volvo S80. Maggie ended up taking a different job. Turned out well as she got a pay raise. Very unplanned. We lost quite a few folks at work due to contract breaches and overturns. I have worked 7 days a week since the 1st of March. Most weeks in excess of 70 hours. I am thankful to have a job, just need a break! Good news is we are finally getting a break. I have this weekend off. We are going to ride the three sisters in Leakey. Our 1st ride together since last June! I have battery cable cut and ready to outfit when I get back. If anyone still wants them. It looks like I will have the next 4-6 weekend off to catch up. Bet we figure out a way to spend the overtime money! Talk to everyone soon. Jb and Maggie

lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ok folks- I count 15 set here. I stopped by the weld shop and ordered cable. I will pick that up Tuesday after work. Should ship cables the 13th to the 16th. As they are finished I will post Paypal info and snail mail info. I will make a few extra for spring and summer. I will PM each member on this posting for shipping info about the middle of the week. I even have fancy Post Office labels this time. JB- 26 replies

Battery Cables for 2010
lonestarmedic replied to lonestarmedic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The Posi-Lock fuse holder is an ATC type holder that fits the 12 gauge accessory wire. To replace the main 40 amp fuse requires a bit more work than just using an ATC fuse. I replaced mine with a MAXI-Fuse. These are a common fuse of the same design as the ATC fuse. The "legs" are about 3/8" wide. I used a holder with 8 gauge leads and soldered it in place of the original fuse holder. There is a version of a MAXI-fuse holder with screw used in marine applications. I considered it but decided it was physically too big. If there is enough interest, I will see what I can do for a main fuse kit. JB- 26 replies

Kreg- I have duct tape and various sizes of hammers. I can even supply a metric version. Should be all you need to fix a Ford. When you hit your knuckles with the metric hammer, you have to learn how to curse in Japanese! JB

I am finally ready to assemble battery cables for 1st Gens. Getting my shop useable has been a pain in the rear. I plan on making enough for all who need them plus 3-4 extra sets. The price of copper has skyrocketed. I now pay 0.25 per foot more than last year. By purchasing the supplies carefully, I can keep the prices the same as last year. So, please reply to this thread and let me know how many sets to make. The cable is available locally so it won't take long to finish a batch. Cable from battery to solenoid is 8". Cable from solenoid to starter is 34". Cable from battery to ground is 34". The aux. leads are 8" and made from 10 gauge. I made all of the cables 2" longer than stock to allow for the increased bend radius. I have also added a ground and a positive 12 gauge accessory lead for any extra items. All 4 gauge terminals are soldered using 50/50 rosin core. The crimped ends also have solder. All terminals have adhesive wall shrink tubing applied to seal the wires. I am finishing them off by sealing any open ends with Liquid Electrical Tape. The positive aux. lead has a ring terminal to attach to the screw inside the stock fuse holder. Just remove the 3/8" blade terminal and use the screw for the ring terminal. The aux. ground lead attaches with a posilock. Price is $40.00 shipped via Priority flat rate to the US and $46.00 to Canada. If you want a posilock fuse holder for the 12 gauge lead, add $4.00. NO MONEY YET!! NEED A HEAD COUNT!! J.B.

Kreg- Is it a 4WD? Ford has the famous twin traction beam front end. On the 4WD weak front springs cause the lean you describe due to the construction of the suspension. This can also happen to 2WD in the same way. I have an E350 with front coils and ball joints. It is an old U-Haul. When loaded heavy, the front springs compress and the geometry of the front suspension causes the top to tilt inward. The answer is new springs. On a leaf sprung 4WD you can use an add-a-leaf. The trick is it takes a 1 1/2 leaf kit due to the construction of the spring pack. On a coil spring front you can put air bags inside the coils. We often did this to E350 ambulance chassis' due to the chronic overloading. I am thinking of putting bags in the old U-haul. I installed new coil springs but still see the tilt when fully loaded. This tilt will cause the ball joints to wear out faster. Neither item is that hard to repair. Just remember to watch the load on the springs. If they are under compression bad ju-ju can happen when things slip. JB

Hard to find. I have only seen them used. I don't think they are made anymore. I have a seen 2 styles. Turn down and straight back. JB

I would like 2 of these. It should make holding the lower nut easier while tightening down the upper nut against a "Furber fix" washer. I can then make torque adjustments and truly see what happens to the dreaded steering shake. Let me know on the Paypal. Anytime you are ready. J. B. Floresville, Texas

Well, I guess I gotta go to the big city (New York, New York) for 4th of July. Mochalady needs to show up for a wedding on July the 2nd. We plan on flying out of Texas on the 29th-30th of June and fly back home about the 6th-7th of July. If anyone is familiar with the Islip/Babylon area we will need to find a car rental and the best way to get around. The cheapest way in and out is via JFK. I looked at MacArthur and the price just about doubles!! I hope to visit the WTC memorial on the 5th and pretty much stay around Babylon or suburbs the rest of the time. If it was just me I would iron-butt my 1st Gen and have a blast doing it. Thanks in advance folks JB

ATGATT All The Gear All the Time MOTGATT Most Of The Gear All of The Time ATGATT is usually Helmet, Eye protection using a shield, Gloves, Boots, Jacket, and Pants/Chaps all specifically made for motorcycle use. MOTGATT is usually Helmet, Boots, and maybe Gloves. A lot of folks will drop the Jacket and Pants/Chaps depending on the weather. I won't get into the discussion of either because that is almost as dangerous as religion or politics. JB

27 for me. Eisenhower and amendments got me. I guess if I was a native Texan I might have gotten 28. I figure 20 or better is pretty good considering some are what I would term trivia. JB

Looking for dead 83-89 TCI units
lonestarmedic replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think perhaps a lower wattage and a regulated power supply might help. 60 watts is pretty healthy. I use 5-25 watts on most circuit boards. Also, in addition to the new solder trick you can always cut the diode off the board and leave the "legs" in the holes. Then heat up the legs and push them out the back. That way you can avoid lifting the circuit trace off the front of the board. Then a bit of braid to wick the solder out of the holes. JB -

Wilkie- The 2730 would do what you want easily. The 550 has bluetooth, SD card for music and XM capability. Make sure you have the receipt from the pawn shop. Then you can contact Garmin and register the unit. Then you can get the lifetime map update. It is about $90-$100 and gets you 3-4 updates each year. Either way, I'll be happy to wire the critter up. I got my workbench bolted together today. I might be functional in the shop by sometime Sunday. Oh, if you left a message the other day my phone has been freezing up and has selective message retention. JB

Radio Fixin'
lonestarmedic replied to Bill W.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Small solder iron. About 5-10 watts. De-soldering wick and fine solder. Take your time and go light on the solder. Those switch legs don't take a lot. I think I will order 20-30 of the switches and put them in stock. When my shop gets up and running, I can fix a spare radio I aquired. Thanks for the link to mouser. JB -
On 12/22/09 my friend Garry Brown died in a motorcycle accident. Somehow he went into the opposing lane on a curve and hit a cement truck head on. We don't know why, it was just a tragic accident. The bike and truck burst into flames. The truck driver is ok. Garry was 61 and a prospect member of the Alamo City Gypsy MC. Below is a picture of Garry as Santa just a few days before on the Elf Louise toy run. JB

I use footwear with a crepe sole on concrete. A lot depends on what you like for footwear. S.A.S. shoes are great. Good support and quality. If you like slip-on boots try the Double H brand. Get the ones marked made in U.S.A. They have great soles. Bates Ultalites are also good. They go from a shoe all the way to 10" combat/tactical. Now, if we are going the other way I suggest using a mix of 1/3 fine gravel, 1/3 sand, and 1/3 quick setting Portland cement. If you don't use quick-set, you have to keep them motionless for too long. JB

Actually, I think that switch ""on" arms the radio. Witn the radio off and the volume switch on the Garmin comes through the system. Power up the radio and the cassette connection drops out. I put a set of stereo plug-ins and switches in a small box. I turn off the radio and then select one of 2 inputs. I can run either the Garmin or an additional input. I have been experimenting with a box that has a priority override system. So, If you are listening to music, the GPS voice will trigger an override and come through. I have seen these devices on line and they sell for way more than they are worth. When I get my shop running again, I will play again. JB -

Don't let them cause you any regrets. I am getting ready to plunk down money for a 2010 Vision myself. I will keep my 1st Gen. One of the best handling bikes I have ridden. And the saddlebags hold a lot if you pack right and use the door storage organizers. Go over to www.vision-riders.com and introduce yourself. I am on there as well. Same screen name. JB

In an effort to allow 2nd Generation Ventures to keep up with the 1st Generation, I have developed a JATO system. In order to better service my customers, I will be offering this in both LOX and Solid-OX forms. The units will mount under the saddlebags just outboard of the mufflers. The quick release will be a manual pull lever mounted under the cassette door. Removal of the cassette player is mandatory. Prototypes were tried using an electrical solenoid release but proved to be unreliable. Only one side released causing a drastic deviation from a straight path of travel. We have also redesigned the attachment brackets to correct a small problem of allowing the right side to mount backward. This was causing an interesting rotationary motion of the bike! I will soon be offering the JATO kit in a reverse mount configuration for 1st Generation Ventures. This feature can be used as a retro rocket to slow down, or as a decelleration device to allow 2nd Gens to catch up. Pricing should be in the $50K - $60K range depending on the price of WWII military surplus at the time. JB
