I have never used the chat room, but last night noticed that the main page for the Forum was down, too. The only thing loading was the header, but all other pages seemed to be working OK. I did not see any messages regarding that coming through so I figured it was on my end only. This morning the page is loading fine. Maybe the DNS server had not updated last night yet...

Thank you Walter!!! I just sent you a PM with my info...

What a rip! It is 50 degrees and partly cloudy back home in Knoxville, too. Luckily no rain today... ***yet***. But, I can't see the beach from here so you still do have some upside. Plus, the key is that you are getting to ride! I hope you have some better weather move in while you're there. We had some friends from Knoxville down there last week and it was incredibly hot, so you never know what you're going to get. Their trip included one of them having a gallbladder removed via emergency surgery. Luckily they trailered down... Enjoy your trip, and stay safe! Don

I've ridden the stretch from Middlesboro KY to Morristown TN and found it to be pretty scenic but it would not be bad for a motor home. Mainly gentle sweepers over that stretch. It goes over a mountain, House Mountain I think, but that is not bad either. I can't help any before or after that section...

Thanks Condor, I got it. I wasn't really teeing it up for sale since I have no idea what it's worth. My wife bought it a few years back to use on the '83 but I sold it before installing it. Then I didn't have the heart to bore a hole through the fender on the '88 with the neat little design we'd had painted on. I'd like for someone to get some use out of it though. We have been looking to see what we paid for it...

They pretty much covered it all. I had an '83, and still miss it every day. :crying:I have a framed photo of it in my office. Great power and agility, plus it was the Black Cherry, loaded with chrome and looked super with the clamshell bags and slightly upswept pipes. I currently have an '88VR and an '03 RSMV. The '88 feels pretty nimble for a big bike, too, and I have always felt comfortable manuvering it in most any circumstances and have carved up some pretty mean roads with it. The pegs being below the rider and the seating position seem to make the 1st gen bike feel somewhat more like a sport / touring bike. The 2nd gen feels like a touring / cruiser to me. I always have felt like going through curves with the 1st gens was like "neck reining" a horse, while you tend to muscle the 2nd gens. Maybe it's the bigger tires, or maybe it's just me. Anyway, that's my opinion, and you know what they say about those... To add my opinion with 1rooster's format: As for power... My '83 was much quicker, and I think the '88 is stronger than the '03 Comfort..2nd gen hands down. Absolutely. Much better seating with forward controls. Trailer..Don't know yet, haven't towed with the 2nd gen, but the first towed very well. Handling..First Gen all the way. It felt close to a sport bike set up, especially the '83. The 2nd gen not so much, a totally different animal. Touring 2up....2nd gen for me, too. Just more room and more comfortable position with the forward controls. You can't lose either way with these bikes...

All that bike needs is the Ventureline Front fender light like shown in the catalog cuts above. I've got one, still in the original shrink wrap package, that I bought and never got around to using. I did not want to cover up the filigree on the fender. I just don't know what it would be worth...

The CB antenna is broken off at the load coil on my '03 RSMV. I rarely use the CB, and when I do it is basically communicating with the group I am riding with, so great performance is not necessary. Does anyone have one of the OEM CB antennas that they would like to get rid of? Thanks! Don

Thanks for the responses! I did receive an email back from Tom with a number to call them with so they can help. They were very helpful when we bought the trailer and even included spare bearings and etc in the event any should fail. Fortunately after over 6,000 miles we have never had any issues aside from the lock and the hydraulic cylinders weakening. The trailer pulls well and holds WAY MORE than we should be packing. The customer service they give is excellent. I was just wondering if anyone had came up with a better idea for replacing the OEM lock...

I agree with footsiebiker. Let the Hardley get over and slow down traffic then go as you wish. Those hard-core folks don't bother me because I don't need their approval or admiration. My first experience with them was when I needed a tire mounted and the guy was a real jerk, telling me that they worked on harley's only. I had real, American money...But, alas, as I have now learned harley owners are used to over-paying for any repairs unlike most of us so I guess it makes us less desireable. Plus, I guess I would be pretty pi**y myself if I had overpaid for a basically inferior machine. It's a good thing they have the monogramed drawers to keep them happy (distracted) or we'd probably see them on "America's Most Wanted" every episode... They have a "lifestyle" I just don't need.

Some time ago I read about someone changing the locking mechanism on their Piggybacker XL but can't seem to find the post. The cylinder on mine broke in half and fell out during vacation this year and I must come up with a replacement. The lock is probably the weakest feature of the trailer and I had planned to eventually replace it. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, how did you fix it? Thanks! Don

It would be interesting to see if an annoying noise would qualify for such action. I sure hope not. Obviously we all know our society has come to the point that we will seek litigation for anything, but this seems so frivilous. I do not recall my early single cylinder Yamahas, my 350, or my 650 Special as having any "whine" at all. Maybe it was the "idle to wide open" style of riding back then... Then my 750 Maxim sounded like the Jetson's car at times. I simply took that as a charactistic of the bike. There was always excellent, superior performance and never a mechanical issue. If I did not like the sound I could simply have bought another brand. Each of the three Ventures I have since owned have had some degree of "whine". Once again, if that had been an issue I would have sought out another brand. I like Yamaha products and have been very pleased with their dependability over the years and have purchased both new and used bikes. The issue of the gear sound is a minor annoyance at most. Would I like it without the whine? Sure. But I know that this is a characteristic of the bikes and make my buying and riding decisions with that fully in mind. There seem to be a much lower instance of engineering and design flaws on these bikes than some of the other manufacturers products. With the RK pipes I have now on the RSMV if we are not "whining" we are roaring, and I like that just fine. I can take that a lot better than parts falling off, inadequate power, or normal occurances like shifters and linkage coming apart on the road. There are plenty of other choices out there for those that do not feel the same way. Maybe the Fed will require that Yamaha place a warning sticker prominently on the bikes it sells stating that "WARNING: This vehicle may produce a perceptible and possibly annoying sound at various operating conditions."...

Hi Bob, Sign us up for two second gen pins and let us know how to remit payment. Thank you for making these available to everyone in this manner! Thanks again, Don

Are you using windshield bags on your second gen? If so what are your thoughts, how was the installation, and where did you get them? I would like to have black leather studded bags that seal pretty well if I add them, and do not want to mess up the windshield mounting area...

I had an '83 750 Maxim and loved it. As was already mentioned above it was strong and virtually bulletproof. The only problems I ever had was leaving the choke on and crudding up the plugs. It would sputter and hesitate... Then I learned by accident all I had to do was ride a few miles really torquing it and the plugs would be just like new. Aside from that never an issue, I loved that bike nearly as much as my '78 650 Special, and that was a bunch!

:puzzled:Is anyone using the Verticle Hide A Hitch from Diamond R Accessories? If so, are you pleased with the function and looks? It sounds like a great idea. I was just curious about clearance, how visible it is when the receiver is removed, and how the safety chains would clear the fender. It looks like they will be hooked up and under the fender...

Simple operation? not for me...

Thank you T.J.! I appreciate the suggestions and the idea about drilling the drain holes in the housing. I'll get on that this weekend. Thanks again, Don -
My 86 runs like crap
yamadawg replied to Sheradan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Just a suggestion since I am not even close to being as sharp or informed as most folks on here but have you checked to see that the emulsion tubes are seated and as tight as they should be? I had an issue with OK idle but crappy acceleration and mid to upper range rpm running on my '88VR during a Sturgis trip in '07. It would up being the emulsion tube in one carb. Being a layman it looks like the main jet to me. Looking down from the top in the air box you could see the tube (gold in color) following the needle on the end of the slide in and out when the engine was running and you accelerated. The thing is two piece and is held together from the other side and had came unscrewed. The fix was simple except I overtightened teh tube and had to replace it. No problem ever since. I thought I would share this, just in case... -
I bought visors for each of the lights on my '03 RSMV then put the visors on the front passing lamps and turn signals. I postponed the Headlight visor until today since I would need to split the fairing, but decided to put the rear turn signal and HD license plate light visors on last night. Someone had been there before me on the turn signals added LED light rings inside, but they do not work. Anyway, as part of their operation they had stripped the heads on the screws so I had purchased replacements. I drilled out the heads and the lens came off, no sweat on the left side. The housing was filled with water and the lower screw was rusty. When I put the vice grips on the screws to back them out the top removed easily, but the lower snapped right off! Has anyone experienced this or do you have any suggestions how to get this fairly tiny screw out now? :confused24:I hate to have to replace the entire assembly... Now after days and days of rain, the sun is shining and I am sitting here looking at that stinking broken off screw. Crap!

Good deal Jerry. I am glad that it did not become a source of confusion but instead may be helpful. And thanks for the ebay hint!
