Suspension / handling questions
yamadawg replied to yamadawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hey Wes, It looks like it's just me and you on this one so far. My bike is lowered 1" on the front and seems to handle great. Not like a 1st gen, but still good. :Venture:Maybe we'll hear from some others soon... Don -
1300 cuts out
yamadawg replied to foxman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I always have to throw this in, too, 'cause it happened to me. Take the top of your airbox off and filter out and run the engine. You'll have to work the throttle because it will not want to run with those off. As you blip the throttle hold a flashlight and watch to see if the emulsion tube on any of the carbs follows the needle back out. It'll look like a little gold sleeve that backs out when the diaphram pulls the slide and needle back out. We came back to Tennessee from South Dakota spitting and sputtering, getting around 20 to 25 mpg all because one of these loosened up and backed out. It is really simple to check, and if that is it, it is a pretty simple fix. Just my 2 cents... -
There is only one thing that I would add to the excellent information that has already been posted. I would suggest that you plan on regular stops throughout your trip. Do not ride until you are uncomfortable. Stop, get off of the bike and stretch a little and move around. It may only take 10 minutes or so, but may well allow you to ride another couple of stretches for the day and enjoy the ride much more. My wife and I target 100 miles at a stretch or around 1 1/2 hour "blocks" between stops. If either of us gets uncomfortable we'll stop for a few minutes and start back good as new. Not being used to the longer rides you may well want to stop much more often. It's your ride... enjoy it at your pace. We learned during our first longer trips that if we pushed too hard by the end of the day we were hurting and miserable. That pain carried on to the next day(s) and beyond during the trip. Later on you may be good to easily ride from gas stop to gas stop one-up, but I would not suggest that for your first long ride. Resist the urge to ride until it hurts, your comfort level should guide you. Enjoy the ride!

How many VR members does it take to change a light bulb?

Those look Aussie-um! Excellent idea!

Excellent!!! The bike looks great! And, all of those accessories really set it off. I really like where you put the whiskers on the saddlebags, too. Mine are on the top, but I think I like yours better. Great job!

:mo money:Whoo-Hoo! I got a bargain! The dealer here only charged me $12 for two keys!!! I always keep one key in my wallet just in case after doing that frantic search mission many times myself...

The previous owner of my '03 RSMV lowered the front by moving the forks up the triple tree one inch. He did this because he was shorter, but I am 6'3" and thought that I may like the bike a little higher. Really, for no particular reason as it looks fine and seems to handle OK as it is. I saw on some other postings that some say the bike handles better with the front lowered like this. If so, I am fine with leaving it as it is. Mine is the only 2nd Gen I have ridden so I have nothing to compare it to and would appreciate any input. :scratchchin:What has been your experience? Does the bike handle better with the front lowered? Thanks! Don

Like Tom said above I too read all of the reviews then went shopping. In the end I chose the Garmin 255W. It was $167 at Sam's Club. The reviews said it was good in bright sunlight but I have found that it is OK, but not great. The software is fine and finds the route you want but is not super flexible. It has a lot of neat features and served us well finding our way, finding food, gas, and points of interest during our vacation trip this year. It did a great job all around the south and was a great friend as we travelled the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. Interestingly it lost its' bearings on the Parkway and clocked us at a top speed of 243 MPH! :smile5:I was very proud! It is not weatherproof so I keep mine in a plastic bag if I even think it will rain. We were in a massive downpour in central North Carolina and it lost satellite reception, but to be honest I was giving up, too. Plus, with its' internal battery it will work up to 4 hours without being plugged in, so you can stow it away and pull it out as needed. I am fine with the display versus spoken directions so this one suits me fine. I keep the volume off even when I'm in the cage. If the voice is important to you look for one with bluetooth capabilities so you can hear the directions. The 255W does not support that. I felt that this one was the best buy for the money... You can get better units, but I can buy four of these plus a really nice dinner for what those cost. It all depends on what you want. If you look for one of the 255W's shop around... I saw it "on sale" at one of the truck stops for $229, regular $279. Check out Sam's first...

Need mounts for Markland backrest
yamadawg replied to yamadawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Congratulations!!! The backrest does make a world of difference, especially if you are not riding 2 up, but often even then. I am very glad to hear yours worked so successfully. If you come through East Tennessee make sure and let me know ahead of time so we can link up and take a look at it! -
Need mounts for Markland backrest
yamadawg replied to yamadawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I had allen head bolts for mine. There was a spacer in there, but for the life of me I can't remember just how it all went together. Mine was just rigged up, but worked perfectly. With the covers over the pivots it looked fine. I don't know what the original set up looked like, but I feel sure mine was "engineered". I never looked forward to taking it off and on... -
Need mounts for Markland backrest
yamadawg replied to yamadawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thank you Mike! My friend Ronnie has an '83 that he wants to put this on. I remember having quite a time finding a replacement for a broken one I had five or six years ago for my '83. I wound up buying two to make up one full set. I would think there are probably many bikes out there with these still on them but no backrest. I really enjoyed the backrest on my '83, we would just take it off when riding 2 up and that was a pain with that design. Good luck with making the rail pads from epoxy. They may be even more durable than the originals. Hopefully they work great for you! Don -
Need mounts for Markland backrest

That is it. I had forgotten even what they has looked like, but that is it... -
I would like to see if any of the folks here from the Knoxville TN area are planning to ride in the Toy Run from Smokies Park this Sunday, October 25th. It would be nice to have a chance to meet before or even after the ride at SMH-D....

I have friend with an '83 standard that has come up with a Markland backrest in pretty good shape. The problem is that he does not have the mounts. I seem to remember from mine that the Markland mounts actually provided a small "ledge" that the rest sat and pivoted forward on, and it was held on by a center screw on each side, unlike the Ventureline that has clips or clevis pins. If anyone has the old mounts that they can part with please PM me with details and I'll get with him... Thanks! Don

I have found that function to be very helpful as well. It seems to be a perfect tool to go along with the search engine and has saved me time and kept me from starting threads that would have been redundant. I use it just like a search engine sometimes... In other words... I like it.

Great news! Those folks at Air Rider have always treated us very well as customers too. Jerry Daniels, the owner, has gone out of his way to help us in the past. They are just a little south of us here (around 90 miles), and any time that I can do business with them I make it a point to. I'm really glad they got you fixed up!
