  1. There are 2 or 3 upgrades to the hot start problem. 1. Upgrade the stock wimpy cables to at least 4 AWG welding cable so that they can carry more amps to the starter. Also clean all of the connections from the battery to the starter on both the positive AND negative sides so that all the amps can get thru. 2. Upgrade to the 4 brush starter, or do the ground wire update to your 2 brush starter. maybe 3. Some people feel that the AGM batteries will spin the starter faster. I did not have that experience and found the AGM to have a short lifespan. Any one of these upgrades will make a noticeable improvement in hot starts. Of course doing all of them is best. I did the cables and the ground wire mod to my 2 brush starter and have not had any hot starting issues since. I still have a good old flooded Yuasa battery. As mentioned the stator has no bearing on starting, its only job is to supply electrical power after the engine is already running. Not all bikes have a hot start issue. I would wait and see if you have an issue. If you are in deep enough to do the wires I would do that first since that is the least expensive upgrade. My bike starts just fine as is so I will not get a 4 brush starter until this one manages to die, I do not expect it to die for MANY years to come.
  2. Drilling the cover? My understanding is that it is just replacing the bolt in the center of the flywheel with one that comes with a hole in the center, and then sticking a specially bent piece of wire into that hole. No drilling required. The hole in the bolt allows oil under pressure to come out of the crankshaft and the spinning of the flywheel flings the oil outward to cool the stator. I have not looked but you might even be able to do this mod without taking the cover off, just pull out the center part that is held by 2 screws and sealed with a reusable rubber O-ring. If you do not have this mod then you should do it.
  3. First test piece of the Replacement cover, machined out of cheap soft plastic, is done. And it even fits on a carb........... The design and the fixture will need a few minor tweaks just to make me happy. Mostly for cosmetics. The final version will be painted black and then the tops of the fins machined back to bright, just to look pretty. or maybe get them Diamond Cut by that @eusa1 guy........... Next up will be the 2 easy parts, the clamp to hold the injector in and the fuel fitting to attach the fuel line to the injector. Both of these require no special tooling or machine setups so I will probably make them out of metal on the first try. last part will be the adapter to hold the injector in the bore where the slide norm, ally lives, that part needs me to buy a couple of expensive tools to make. It will get done out of cheap soft plastic to prove out the design and my machining methods.
  4. Well due to circumstances beyond my control, I had some time to build the fixture for machining the "Replacement Cover". I will be making up a test set of parts to prove out all of the fixtures and machining methods before I actually order a pile of aluminum to start carving on. I have started making the cover out of a chunk of plastic. I need to do a whole lot of math before the next cut........... PVC plastic is soft enough that I can not crash a tool if I do something wrong. I know that I will also need to buy some cutters to be able to make a few of the tricky precision cuts. There are a few features that need a tolerance of +/-.001 in. Some of the parts I have not even really started to figure out how to make.
  5. It is gonna be real close but I think I will run out of room. I do not know if I can find a shorter injector, or find a way to set the injector a bit deeper.
  6. That is the weep hole on the bottom of the water pump. If anything is coming out of the hole it will be either oil or coolant or a mix of both, depending on which seal is going bad. do not plug it, it is there to let any leakage come out to help prevent cross contamination of the 2 systems.
  7. Can you take a pic of the threaded end of the bolt?
  8. Sorry to hear, Prayers up.
  9. It looks more like oil to me. look in the air cleaner to see if there is a lot of oil in there. Over filling the oil will pump the excess into the air cleaner and from there it will leak down the sides of the carbs.
  10. And then there are other areas that have gone in the opposite direction. In the world of model airplanes it has become very difficult to find a kit to build, Now almost all model aircraft come out of the box ready to fly, that sure takes the fun out of it.
  11. When I sell on ebay I will use any appropriate size box I have. It has occasionally been a smile box if I had one sitting around. Does not mean that Amazon was involved with the transaction in any way.
  12. I think there is a complete clutch in the box of parts that claims to be a complete disassembled engine. More digging..................
  13. Sooooooo If I were to put in a Barrnett 6 spring clutch on my 1300 would the 1200 cover then fit?
  14. That Heli went for over 10K, the crate engine is 30K by its self. I would love to an auction like that that is more local, some of that stuff would be worth bidding on but not when you have to hire their packer$ and $hiperS. It was interesting to watch the snipers that were consistently hitting under 3 seconds to go.
  15. I already have that one...............
  16. The clutch cover is where I remember the difference. It is either the new fits the old or the old fits the new but not the other way around. My rememberer says that one has more internal clearance for something. I am hoping that it is the old had more clearance for the big clutch springs and the new with the thin diaphragm spring is the shallow one. IF that is the case then it is a double benefit to me and the plans that my warped little mind is working on.............. I will try to do some measuring on the outside of the covers and see if I can find a difference.
  17. Congrats on the new place, BUT I am betting that we can still get you some snow down there, maybe not for 9 months out of the year, but it is still in range......
  18. My kids know exactly what this one means as do their kids.
  19. OK now you got me thinking again, we all know that is always dangerous. If you look at the screw that holds the diaphragm cover to the carb can you get me a dimension from the surface that that screw bears on to the closest point of the tank. I have an idea that might save a bit of space, but I need an idea of how much space is actually needed.
  20. I know where it is, I put a lot of things in that same place. It is a nice safe place so that you will be able to find it when you need it........
  21. No problem, you only need to average 102 MPH. No problem for a Venture...... Oh wait your not on a venture, never mind...........
  22. I have an '88 1300 with stock engine covers. (clutch, water pump, middle gear, stator, valve covers) I also have a parts engine from an '85 1200. Are all of these covers interchangeable? For my winter project I was thinking of trying to do some custom work on all the covers for the '85 and then bolt them onto my '88 if they will fit. I do not care about the differences in nomenclature that is on them. Of course the differences in nomenclature make them different part numbers in the parts lists. I thought I remember reading that one of the covers is deeper for the 1200 vs the 1300, but I can not find it, and can not remember which way it was.
  23. I never measured it. I just kept snugging till all the play and wobble was gone. I am guessing it is around 4-5 lb/ft. I only turned the ratchet by palming the head.
  24. Oh sure another thread to tell me how old I am. I still have and use VHS, and Hi8 tapes. My only video camera is a Hi8 I still have a rotary phone connected and in use. I still have 8mm film and a projector. Communication satellites are still in use. I don't even know how to text, so yes "Call Me".
  25. Ummmmm If the boat lands at 6:15 and you are able to hit the road immediately upon docking that gives you 45 minutes to cover 75 miles. You might need to borrow Super Pucs Cape..................... DO NOT try to head out on I94 west. it is under major road destruction. Take I43 south to escape Milwaukee. I43 is the road you want to to end up on anyhow. Feel free to call me about local road destruction. It is a mess around here.
