Hmmmmmm..... Just started to look at installing the hitch. There are some damaged and missing parts. I need the 2 bars that slide inside the mounts and the hitch. It looks like someone used the hitch to jack up the back of the bike and bent those bars. I also need the 2 vertical brackets and U clamps that come up from the chrome tabs. The ebayers that I got the hitch from does not have the vertical brackets. If I really have to I can fabricate all of these parts, but it would be a lot easier to just bolt the right stuff on.

You can also put a jack or spacer under the ramp to decrease the angle at the top and then add a small ramp to get up to the trailer ramp. Effectively you are just making the ramp longer.

Side stand bolt solution
Flyinfool replied to dingy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I like it. KISS written all over it. Off to the hardware store we go. -
I don't see any sign of rust on that broken bolt, is it by chance stainless steel? Most stainless hardware is equivalent to grade 2. Wimpy. It also looks like a pretty big relief cut at the point that the bolt broke. A designed in weak spot.

The best KISS would be to simply add an ON/OFF switch into the bikes existing headlight circuit. I like the idea of it being automatic where I do not have to remember to turn off the headlight switch before turning on the ignition. I did look at the time delay relay$$. That would be easy and would work but I don't want to spend that much if I don't have to. This relay circuit is not switching the power to the light, it is all control circuits. So I do not need high amp relays. I am sure that I have adequate relays, wire, and terminals in my parts box somewhere. That makes this a no cost option. The wiring should be pretty easy since the one relay is simply across the neutral light and the headlight wire is easily accessed via the unplugged and jumpered Reserve Lighting Unit. I'll try to take pics as I go.

Dang this headlight is bright! OK. I think I have the relay circuit figured out so that the head light will not come on till I shift out of neutral. For this to work the bike must be in neutral before I turn on the ignition. any time the power is on and the bike is out of neutral the headlight will turn on and stay on till the ignition is turned off. For those that want to play with the circuit simulator it is located HERE, and I have included the text file of this circuit to import. To import this file just click File>Import, and then copy-paste the contents of this text file into the window. Now you can play with the switches and watch the current flow animation. Now I just need to spec out and acquire the relays that I will use. More to come as I build this. Did I mention that this light is BRIGHT, I like it, and it is well worth any hassles along the way. 44804.txt

A date and a place? I thought about hosting it, but my place is so small that if more than a half dozen show up, there will be problems. I sure am up to meeting some more like minded lunatics. Hmmmm... Maybe we will have to get some cheese cake to lure in those southerners. Seems to be the appropriate bait. I have some more of that dead deer polish sausage, that I brought to the Maint day in Fond du Lac last summer, that can be tossed into the mix.

That sounds like either a defective tire or improper mounting procedure that damaged the bead. That bead wire should not just break. It sounds like between the installer and the supplier might both be at fault here. I would start by taking the tire back to the store and show them the separated bead. That may get a replacement, or they may know what that failure looks like from over inflation. It can't hurt to ask. With stubborn tires I have just added a LOT of lube to help it slide in to the seat. When I was racing stock cars we used to up the air pressure to about 60psi, on a tire rated for 35psi max, to PERMANENTLY expand the tire for adjusting the stagger on the car. At 80+ pressures you have to be damaging the tire.

Yup, It is that time of year. This is one of the two highest danger periods of the year for hitting deer. At this time of year the does are dropping their new fawns, so they are driving last years crop out of their territory. They do this to keep the gene pool spread out. This means that there are a lot of young deer running around looking for a new place to live. If that young deer happened to grow up in an area with few or no roads they have no clue as to how to cross the street because mom never had to teach that to them. Keep your eyes peeled for them critters.

Ummmmm...... Why was it at 80psi and still adding more???????

Electrical: Fuse question
Flyinfool replied to TomMar's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Where the voltage rating comes in is if you were to use a 32V fuse in a 120V application, the voltage would not cause the fuse to blow. The fuse will still not blow till the rated Amps are reached. The problem is that even though the 32 volt fuse did blow in the 120V circuit, it may not be able to stop the flow of current. The voltage rating the the MAXIMUM voltage that the fuse can reliably interrupt. -
external 12v power supply idea help please

It will be tough to get a solar system big enough to make a difference in just one day of bright sun charging. I do use a solar float charger for the batteries in my RV while it is stored and for that it works great if I have a month for it to charge. I would use the self resetting circuit breaker but I would use a 10 amp fuse. You do not want to risk pulling the main fuse going down the road. -
From the underwater video it looked like they were trying to shut off the valve at the ocean floor, but when the platform sank it broke that last emergency shut off valve.

It is already changing things. On the way into work today I noticed that ALL gas stations went up 20 cents over night.

best head lite bulb ?
Flyinfool replied to Thom's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Modifying the CMS is a lot easier than getting to it. There are a few threads on here as to how to do it. Since you already have the red light you do not have to mod the CMS right away. But you MUST do the mod to the Reserve lighting unit or the HID will not work right. But that is a simple mod and not to bad to get to. -

You could always wrap those nice red connectors with electrical tape. -
BURNT! clutch.. wow..
Flyinfool replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The oil does not know that you are leaning in a turn. You could just as easily check you oil level in a hard turn of either direction and it will not change. If you think about it the centripetal force of the turn must be balanced with gravity or the bike will fall down. Try this, tape a cup of water to a level spot on the bike and take some hard constant speed turns, the water will stay level with the top of the cup. Accelerating or decelerating will still splash water out the front or back of the cup unless you are on a unicycle. Just out of curiosity, Do you have a micrometer to measure the thickness of the burnt up plates? Yamaha claims worn out is 2.8mm or .110 inch. -
best head lite bulb ?
Flyinfool replied to Thom's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I went with the HID from HID Country. It is not all that expensive, install is a bit of a pain on the 1st gen, but not terrible, It is extremely bright. I tried the Silverstar bulb, and it has the color of an HID but I did not feel it was any brighter than stock. Something to check with your 90/100 bulb. use a voltmeter to check the voltage at the bulb, the wires in the bike may just be to small for that much power and causing a voltage drop at the bulb. -
That is to make the cassette deck work better.

Not quite Venture related but big motorcycle news. It has been all over the News here in Milwaukee the home of Harley-Davidson Motorcycles, that they are considering closing all of their plants and leaving 1400+ Wisconsin workers without a job. In the paper today it said that they went from a record $1+billion profit in 2006 to a $75million loss last year, and this year looks worse. It may just be the "usual" union breaking tactic of threatening to close the plants and leave town if they do not get major wage concessions and/or tax incentives. We shall see what happens in the near future.

I got my spares made at the local ACE Hardware. They had the correct blanks in stock.

Bike Crash, we both lost... the deer and I

That deer whistle website FAQ supports what I just said. The deer tend to stop look and listen right in the middle of the road.
