HID lighting problems
Flyinfool replied to fw2000's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I do have my old halogen packed on the bike for just in case. I learned the hard way about not having a spare headlight bulb. -
I am fortunate to have equipped a pretty decent man cave over the years. I have it figured that I should be able to retire on my 106th birthday and may need to supplement my income at that time. Until I get the first one built, I have no idea what I will have into it as far as time or materials. All of the materials would be much more cost effective in bigger quantities. Maybe I'll look into the cost difference to make a couple or three vs the one that I was going to do. I was estimating around $50 in just material to do just one. Hmmmm...... This may be a good excuse to go shopping at the tooy,,,, I mean tool store for a nice 8" bench grinder with a coarse wheel and a 20 ton press If I have any intention of trying to make a bunch of these. It really needs no jigs other than a flat table to work on, I try to always design things to be self jigging, the production guys at work kind of like that.

Those pics do confirm one of my ideas, and that was to keep the ball as close to the rear axle as possible for best weight distribution. I may end up making my own stinger to work with the receiver. If this works out as planned it will be a bolt on replacement for the Markland hitch. I know this will sound weird but I just hate chrome and visible hitch balls. I thought about the possibility of making more than just the one for me, but I am not sure if it will be practical. We'll see how much work is involved once I get that far. I plan to fully seal weld all seams so that no water can get into any joint to start corrosion. It will be some fun, and I will have something unique and different. I just can not follow a trend.

HID lighting problems
Flyinfool replied to fw2000's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I have had my HID from HID country since February and I still think it is the best upgrade I have done to date. -
Since I have been unable to find a receiver hitch for my 1st gen MKII, I decided that I will make one this winter. I have a Markland hitch that I acquired off of eBay and I will use the two front tubes from that for attachment to the bike. I have designed a new part to replace the big chrome platform that Markland uses. Once I have this done and am sure that I will not need any dimensions off of the chrome ball mount, then it will be up for sale. Here are the cad drawings for the receiver to replace the stock Chrome ball mount. I still have some dimensions to finalize but this is the jest of what it will look like.

Leveling links, not for me!
Flyinfool replied to Midrsv's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Since you are making your own links anyhow, you can always experiment a little to find a mix that you like. -
I agree to .5A indicates a problem that you need to find. If pulling all of the fuses did not change it then you have an even bigger problem because someone wired in stuff with no fuse. While pulling fuses don't forget the main fuse or the other fuse panel that is forward and to the right and down from the main fuse panel.

How far do you travel to do work? Do you work for food and ice cream? Well congratulations any how, I hope it works out for you.

Going to LEDs on the trailer will help to reduce the current draw a lot. With the high current draw of the standard bulbs the flasher may not work correctly.

:sign yeah that:

How about some skunk sent (for hunting) mixed with some old engine oil and injected into the headers. Not enough for a full fledged smoke screen but enough to be obnoxious. Back in my teens I had rigged my car up with a hose and nozzle to the back to spray windshield washer fluid at anyone that was tailgating. It usually got the point across real quick, especially for convertibles. Now you have my demented little mind going, that is never a good thing.

The wire harness to tap into should be under the seat on the left side.

It is hard to see in the pic but if it is what I think it is it will work. On the end of the box that has 3 wires coming out; The box red goes to the brake wire on the bike is yellow The box green goes to the right turn signal on the bike is dark green The box yellow goes to the left turn signal on the bike is brown. On the end of the box that the 2 wires come out of; The box yellow goes to the flat 4 yellow wire The box green goes to the flat 4 green wire There should then be a brown and a white wire left coming out of the flat 4 connector; The white goes to a good ground on the bike (Preferably the negative battery terminal) The brown goes to the running lights on the bike is blue. There might even be markings on the label of the box to show some of this. Since this in not a powered converter the power to run the trailer lights will come through the electrical system on the bike. Depending on how many lights are on the trailer it is possible to end up blowing fuses on the bike. Test everything with the engine running and the rpm up around 3,000, ( that will give you the full power to the lights) before you take it out on the road for a pull test. You would hate to have to sneak home with no brake lights or something.
-
You will need to install a 5 wire to 4 wire converter on the bike. They are available in most any auto parts store. It is best to use a powered one (one that has a separate power and ground wire) so that it does not mess with your flasher. I have never heard of a plug n play for the venture, you will have to tap into the wires under the seat.

In Wisconsin refusing a Breathalyzer is a crime that will result in arrest, and suspension/revocation of your license. Unfortunately WI has some of the weakest penalties for DUI in the country, They just toughened the laws up some, but not nearly enough. I just love calling the local PD to report someone staggering out of the bar to their car. Some times the LEOs even get them before they can find the keyhole to get the car started.

How you need to wire it depends on the type of trailer lighting that you have. Does your trailer have separate brake and turn signals or does it use the same filament for both brake and turn?

Researve lighting unit
Flyinfool replied to Flyinfool's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It is about the size of a pack of cigarettes and is located just under the dash cover, right on top, easy to get to once you remove the windshield and the dash cover. I have seen them go on ebay for $10-$30. As far a possible failure modes for the RLU. (in no particular order) 1. no headlight at all. 2. low beam stuck on (would still give you high and low together if High selected). 3. High stuck on, (would still give you high and low together if low selected). 4. High and LOW on all of the time. I would think that any time high and low were on at the same time there would be issues of wires not handling the current, and/or possibly blown fuses. I just want one to tear apart to see whats in it, and to get the connector for another project. -

Yes I am interested. It is the plug that I am after. Is the plug still usable? I do not care if the RLU itself works or not. -
OK, 1st Gen brakes for dummies 101. You asked for it! On the 1st Gens the brake lever on the handle bar only applies the right front brake, The foot brake applies the left front brake and rear brake. If you are on a slick surface, like going down a steep gravel drive, and you apply the front brake, the front wheel can lock up and cause the front end to slide out from under you. With the linked brakes of the 1st Gen you are always applying the front brake when you are stopping. Regardless of which brake you think you are applying.

That first pic sure looks like the hitch is way to low, but in the second pic it looks just right. Nice job.

I like it. Along the same lines, I think where the OP was going, was a way to highlight to someone that they are resurrecting something old. There are some very old threads on here that are just very big and still current. Like the Scavenger hunt thread. There is another non cycle site that I frequent that has a feature where if you open up an old thread the border of the page and the dates of the posts turn bright red along with a note next to the date in red that says "Over 1 year old", so that you are fully aware that this thread is more than a year old. Sometimes someone does a search and if there are only a few results they may not realize, unless they make the effort to look, that they are replying to something that may be years old. With the red popping up it makes them look cuz something is different.

Well it seem obvious to me that he was traveling the "WrongWay" You are supposed to have your but on the seat which does a decent job of holding it down. That is what happens when you:mytruck1:

OOpie The pics I posted were for a MKII not a MKI, their different.
