  1. I kind of have to agree with Condor here and join the devils advocate side. It is possible to have to much light. The headlights on a train are incredibly powerful, when all you see is a blob of light you have no perception of distance to that light. Most of the cars that get hit by trains say that they saw the light but thought it was a lot farther away. To an oncoming car if they can not identify your blob of light as a MC they may think it is a car with its Hi beams on that is very far away and turn right in front of you thinking they have plenty of time. Once you get more than about 30 yards away from something, you no longer have actual depth perception. Beyond 30 yards it is just your brain doing the math of, object A is about B big and it looks to be about C big therefore it must be D far away.
  2. Yes
  3. Thanks Just by feel in my hand, the new receiver hitch feels to be very close to the the same weight as the Markland platform it is replacing, so I was/am not concerned about the weight. The bike is a 1st gen, they last forever....... I did do a test by attaching it to the wall and then jumping up and down on the stinger. I am not skinny either. And I was very careful to be sure that there were NO cameras of any kind around for that test.
  4. Dielectric grease is used more than you think. I have a 96 GMC P/U that I bought new in 95, every outside connector that I have ever had to take apart has dielectric grease in it. Every bulb has its base coated with dielectric grease. This was even true on my 89 Chevy P/U. You have to look close to find it cuz the factories do not use any more than absolutely necessary. It is always a VERY thin film. As it should be.
  5. When I first opened the link all that was there was the first line. Its much better now.
  6. I must admit I never weighed anything. I do not have a scale suitable for weighing light weight things. According to my CAD software it should be about 4.5 lbs for the receiver, but my uncalibrated hand says it is less than that. It may be a little overkill for strength, but I would rather have overkill than under kill. The ball alone weighs more than the stinger it is attached to. Till I finish building the trailer I do not have the final design for the stinger/ball height to be able to calculate the stingers weight.
  7. While the P.O. has the most archaic tracking system. They by far have the best chance of my package getting to me in one piece. FedEX has better tracking but manages to damage more things, but does pay for damages they cause. UPS has the very best tracking out there, But it is the exception to get my stuff in an undamaged box. UPS will not pay for damaged goods even when you buy the insurance, their standard line is "It is not our fault due to insufficient packaging, claim denied". Where I work we even PAID UPS $5K to design our packaging to handle their system and they still try to deny damage claims due to insufficient packaging. UPS is always my last choice. I do use FedEx when I need better tracking. I use USPS the most. I don't care about their internal employment issues, just my stuff being where and when it is supposed to be there and IN ONE PIECE.
  8. Here is what I made. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52757 I used the mounts from a Markland hitch and built my own replacement for the Chrome ball mount. I found the Markland mounts on eBay for $25.
  9. Good, that means we can talk in front of his back.......
  10. To get it all off of mine I had to sand it with 2000 wet till the whole windshield was nice and milky white with no shiny spots left. Any shiny spots are remaining coating. Once the whole thing is sanded then used a power buffer with rubbing compound, followed by polishing compound till it was clear as glass. It was a lot of work but it turned the old scratched up windshield to look like new again. The only draw back is that it will now scratch VERY easy without the hard coating.
  11. Dang it. Here I go again.
  12. I went the other route. I convinced the mangalment here that it is not appropriate for me to wear dress shoes and pants, white shirt, and tie. I now wear all black sneakers that look kind of like dress shoes if you don't look close, Black jeans, and a polo shirt. They are pretty much wrinkle proof to wear under my riding gear. The dress code was here since they stopped making dinosaur saddles. Even one of the VPs has now followed my lead. My life experiences have taught me to NOT trust anyone wearing a tie.
  13. From the way that wiring diagram looks, be careful how you wire in the new horn button or you might have a ringing in your ears and still need a new airbag.
  14. Yes I have the blueprints. I have my ark almost finished. It will only handle one male and one female of each species, My 1st gen is powerful and masculine so I'll have to pick up a 2nd gen, it must be the female of the species......... Sorry but I have already filled the male half of the human species, just need the right female to take on a nice long cruise.
  15. On all of my vehicles that have separate HI and LO beam bulbs, I have always rewired with a relay to keep the LO on with the HI. I have always felt that the HI did such a good job of getting light down the road that it misses the stuff that is up close on the road or on the shoulder. You just have to watch your total amp draw on the scoot.
  16. My thought is that it should be painted. Your pic shows it from an angle so the edges are well defined. If you look at it from directly behind, like someone following you, it will start to look more like just a flat plate and most of the detail will not be noticeable. But then this is just my opinion for what it may be worth. ALL of my artistic ability can be put in a thimble with plenty of room left over.
  17. Looks good. Are you going to paint it or keep it natural?
  18. I like the idea, But the ferry + an extra day off work just is not in the budget.
  19. Interesting.................
  20. Yup, the only semi-safe way to do that thru PP is to open a new bank account at a bank other than the one you normally use, and set it up with a new PP account giving PP no info that can tie back to your real PP account, then as soon as the funds hit PP, move it to your bank cash out and close the bank account. Do not let it be picked up till you have cashed out and closed the bank account. This is common scam where the other guy then claims that he never received the merchandise or it was not as advertised. PP will refund his money AND let him keep the merchandise. You end up with nothing.
  21. Well I have the deck made and all of the mounting holes drilled, primed and ready for a light sanding to remove the fuzz that raised up from the primer then the final color coat and install. Took one of the locks out of the topper and took it to a locksmith to get some keys made. Still have to figure out how to fix the hole in the top. I have gotten some good ideas from some of you. I will be doing the lighting differently that what HF designed, but I am not sure what exactly it will be. It will be a lot more lights than stock. Still need to buy a new cooler and build a cooler rack to fit it. All of the coolers that I own are either huge to support 4 people for a week of camping or tiny about the size of a 6 pack. I think i want something in-between.
  22. I was planing to leave Milwaukee around 6AM. Take I294 "around" Chicago and 80/90 most of the way there. plans subject to change for a better idea.
  23. Free labor??? It's probably some of the most expensive labor you will ever get......

    Ez-pass

Annie You do not need either the I-pass or EZ-Pass for your travels. It is a transponder that will automatically debit your account every time you go thru a road toll. There is almost always the option of paying cash or CC, it is just that you have to stop to do it, the passes can hit you for funds while at highway speed. The way the passes work is that you create an account with them that you fill with funds from your CC. There is usually a $40 minimum, then as you go thru tolls they debit that account, when that account gets down to a minimum level they will automatically hit your CC for another $40 to fill it back up. In your case, at the end of your trip you will have made a donation to the issuing state of whatever funds are left in your account. Once they get your bucks, it is Nonrefundable.
