I've been calling around. I found a local place that has a new mattress in stock along with a new heater for just under $200. If this new mattress lasts another 30 years, it will out live me. I slept on one of those foam mattresses once, it did not agree with my back. I have never yet found any mattress other than a waterbed that feels good to my back. Besides, there is a reason they do not advertize the price of those foam mattresses.

Last night I had a hard time falling asleep. No idea why. And I was up a few times during the night which is also not normal for me. This morning I got woke up early feeling really cold and clammy. While lying in that half awake state trying to figure out just what was going on, is when I noticed that everything around me was soaked. The sheets, blanket, pillow, everything. So now I am trying to figure out if I just had night sweats or heaven forbid, did I wet the bed..... Well that thought got me out of the half awake state and into a get the heck out of the bed quick state and head for the shower. But wait no that would be a bad idea since I still need to strip all up the bedding and get it down in the wash. I should do that BEFORE I take a shower. In case you haven't figured it out yet, I am not a morning person, just because my body is up and moving does not mean that my brain is up and/or functioning. So I run all of the bedding down to the basement and toss the first load into the wash machine (with no phones included,,,,,sorry:stickpoke:) well now the wash machine is filling so I certainly do not want to get in the shower with the hot water turning on and off. So I grab some cleaning stuff to clean up the mattress. First I dried if off as best I could with some towels and took those down to the basement. when I got back up stairs and was about to start scrubbing the mattress, its like WTF it is all wet again. so I grab some more towels and dry it off again. and this time just start to clean it right away. WTF again there is a little squirt of liquid that shoots up out of the mattress toward the headboard. That is when it finally dawns on me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, tonight I get to go shopping for a new king size waterbed mattress to replace this 34 year old one....... It sure is a good thing that Erika is still not home with her bum foot yet. We would have been accusing each other of wetting the bed, and that old water on her bum foot would have been really bad news.

Need Ride height measurements.

That brings up the next point, How much lean is to much lean. What is the "ideal" lean angle. My big concern about raising the bike is twofold. First I can just barely reach the ground at a red light as it is. Second if the front gets any higher, it won't fit thru the door to its shed unless I cut down my brand new windshield. I sat on an 85 last weekend and I could get both feet flat on the ground with sneakers on. I am tip toes with my 88. This 85 had a huge lean angle compared to my 88. -
Way back 40+ years ago I lost a thumb to a circular saw blade mounted on a Dremel tool when the power went out during a cut causing to tool to catch and jump. They were able to put the thumb back on but it will never be the same. I have watched the vids from this a bunch of times. http://www.sawstop.com/ Yes the saw will need a new motor but motors can be repaired a lot faster and for a lot less money than new fingers can be grown or repaired. The inventor will demonstrate by running his own hand into a saw. Never more than just a slight nick. had to scarey as all get out the first time he tried it on his own hand.

Maybe I'll have to stop and visit you one of these days on my way home from work, or just buzz on down when you are available. I work (put in time) on the south side of Racine so I must get near you somewhere along the way. -

I have no CLASS. (Or so I am often told) This is a Standard, not a Royal so there is no CLASS system. The front and rear do hold air I can add or remove air and 6 months later the front and rear will still have the same pressure that I put in them. I have not tried the Max pressures from the service manual of 17 front and 71 rear, just to see how far it will lift the bike. -
I have been trying to figure this one out for a while now. I have an '88 standard. When on the side stand there is almost no lean to my bike, it is especially noticeable when parked near other 1st gens. I am always worried about the bike falling over on the right side while it is on the side stand. When I am sitting on the bike and want to put the side stand down, I have to lean the bike well past center and to the right to get enough clearance to lower the side stand. Once the bike is on the side stand, I have to hold it up while getting off so that it does not fall over on the right side. It is not possible to sit on the bike while it is on the side stand, it will fall to the right if you are not ready for it. Once I get off of the bike I have to pull it hard over to the left to raise the suspension as much as possible. While on the side stand I could easily push the bike over on the right side with one finger, it is that close to straight up. I am always worried about a good breeze blowing it over, or even someone just touching it in a parking lot. It is not possible to use the side stand on the side of a roadway, I have to use the center stand if parked on a road. For the air suspension I run 10 lbs in the front and 40 lbs in the rear, both tires are at 42 lbs. both tires are the recommended sizes. Can someone give me some reference dimensions from the ground to somewhere on the frame front and rear so that I can tell if I have a suspension issue or a side stand issue. Shortening the side stand should be a simple job compared to all new springs. I am considering putting in Progressive front springs, maybe next winter. But if the rear spring is also weak then I'll replace that to. I just hate throwing money/parts at a problem in hopes that something will work.

Did you write him a check? Put a stop payment on it. Since you can not call him, send him a registered letter. Use a different phone to call him so that he will not ignore your phone number and / or use the *69 (I think) option to block your number. If he has no phone number, how did you contact him originally? Maybe you can go through that same route to contact him again. If he was referred to you, make sure the source that referred him knows what is going on. As you mentioned earlier, today might be hangover day, after a long weekend of partying the workers may need more money so will have to come and do some work till they get paid next. Since he is already paid in full, the longer this drags out the harder it will be to collect anything because more of your money will be spent and gone.

Modifications for LD Riding .... First Generation VR
Flyinfool replied to twigg's topic in Watering Hole
I often use hi beam and turn signals at the same time. When driving with the sun low and at my back I run the high beam to be better seen by drivers that are half blinded by driving into the sun. Never once has one of them flashed lights at me. Any time I make a turn or lane change I use the turn signal. I do not switch to Lo beam for the turn or lane change unless there is another in use vehicle in front of me. But you never know when someone might be about to pull away from the curb just as you are turning left in front of them. But then there are some definite advantages to having the lights up there. There is not a "perfect" position for the driving lights, every position has pros and cons and it is up to each individual to decide what is most important to them. That is why we have choices. -

Yes I did, Interesting. Since I now have 2 Bad Boyz horns mounted back by the saddle bags, I used the original horn brackets for the new driving lights. -
replacing burned out trunk lights

For the extra couple of bucks I just got the dual temp gun. and some of each temp glue sticks. That way you have the right gun for every job. I think I was still under $25 for the whole works. Yes, a very handy tool. I used the low temp glue on the high temp setting to put the lens back on my trunk reflector after adding in 168 LEDs. -
Thanks for the heads up. I'll be spending the day in the fallout shelter.....

On a 1st gen the fuel valve is down by the right passenger floorboard. I can not reach mine while riding. Also on most 1st gens that valve needs a tool to be able to turn it. -
Sounds like a fun one to figure out. Mmmmmmm........ Dead deer steak..........
-
I put the HH pads on my 1st gen and the difference was incredible. I can literally stop in half the distance that I could with OEM pads. I think the HH wear the rotors a little faster, But I can not put a price tag on the ability to stop.
-
I said half because I had always seen the Steibes at around $50, I paid $22 for my bad boyz. That Amazon ad is a good price for the Stieble
-
The Bad Boyz horns are identical to the Stebils at half the price. Check your wiring to be sure the horn is bad before replacing it. if you need them, I have a pair of factory horns for a 1st gen. I now have dueling Bad boys on the bike.

I went to pick up the engine from RJG1985 to day. We had a nice chat. Thanks Randy. I finally got the camshaft from Dingy. Thanks Gary. The PO delivered it to the wrong address. It took a few days for my neighbor to figure out to get it to me. They were trying to figure out what it was and why it was sent to them before they thought to look at the package to notice that it was not addressed to them........ From first look, there are changes that I think I can make to the tool design that will make it work better and be a lot easier to make.

Oh man, You drove right passed my house and didn't wave as you went by. I am on the south east side of Milwaukee. I would have liked to have bought you an ice cream on your way through.

I was trying to decide if the angle of her car was from the impact on the extreme right side or if it turned a little from a brake lockup, or a combination of both. I could not hear any tires squealing on the vid but the cameras mic was also pointed forward so it might not have picked it up. If she was hard on the brake at impact the weight on the rear tires would have been light and the hit on the corner of the car could have turned it that little bit.

:sign yeah that::sign yeah that: I am sure you would not want to deal with a loose trailer coming off and crossing the center-line and taking out a whole family as compared to a few scratches on the back of your bike. The scenario that you envision of the coupler getting into the tire and lifting the back of the bike is not possible. IF the coupler were to manage to get enough traction on the tire to start riding up to hit the fender, it would stop right there. IF it still managed to get enough traction on the rear tire to lift up on the fender it would be applying an equal amount of down pressure on the tire and actually give you more traction at the rear tire. I order for the trailer to lift something it has to be pushing down on something else for the leverage, that something else will be the back tire. As mentioned above, If you are very careful in coupling the trailer to the ball, The chains are a mute point, you will never need them. The only trailer that I ever had come off was a 6,000 lb trailer on a ball rated for 6,000 lbs MAX. The ball broke going over a big bump on the highway. the chains did their job and there was no damage to the truck or trailer. You will be towing a trailer of under 500 lbs on a ball rated for 2,000 lbs, breakage is not likely. Again it is a matter of stay calm and stop slowly so that the trailer does not ram the tow vehicle.

I thought it looked like both of her hands were on the top of the steering wheel. Hard to see though. There are a lot of pretty brain dead drivers out there. The brake lights let the person behind you know that you are going to stop before they can notice your deceleration. The lack of brake lights MAY have made the difference in the woman being able to stop in time. The lone brake light comes on at the 5 second mark of the vid, impact is at 9 seconds. thats only 4 seconds from minivan brakes to impact. Working brake lights may have given the woman an extra second or 2 of reaction time. I was trying to point out that there were a number of contributing factors in that crash. Had any one of those factors not been there this could have been a boring vid. When I am following a vehicle with defective brake lights I add distance to give me that extra second or two. I do not know where this happened, but here both cars would have gotten citations. The one in front for defective lights, and the one behind for following to close and/or inattentive driving.
-
A couple of observations that I made that were not mentioned. In no particular order; 1. The vehicle in front of the bike had 2 of the 3 brake lights out. The only working brake light was the left one. This would have made it less noticeable to the driver of the car behind the bike that the first car was stopping unexpectedly. 2. As the biker went up in the air you could see that there was a line of cars stopped in front of the car in front of the bike. I am always trying to look thru the vehical in front of me to be able to react to traffic even before the vehicle in front of me does. 3. There was moving traffic in the lanes on each side of the biker. There was a car immediately to his left and you can see his head turn to check for an opening on the right. He had no where to go. 4. They were driving toward the sun. This reduces visibility for everyone. 5. The bike was a smaller sport bike of which most have very poor rear lighting and are mostly black when viewed from behind. This against the black background of the car in front. Combined with the brake lights out on the first car this would also make it harder for someone driving into the sun to spot the brake lights or even the bike at all. I am not trying to imply that this was in any way the fault of the bike. I am just pointing out some of the factors to watch for and think about while you are out there playing dodge the cage.
