Something don't smell rite here. 16-17V is a very high charge level and it will do damage to most things that are made to run on 13.8-14.2. You will have shorter bulb and most everything else life. If the bike came with a 6 cell lead acid battery, that is to much voltage. Lead acid is 2V per cell X 6 cells is 12V, and the proper charge voltage for that is 14V I would reread that section of the manual that said to adjust to 16-17V, That just don't sound right.

Is it possible to have the search feature recognize at least some common TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms). It is real hard to find info on things like HID, CMU, TCI, RLU etc.

Even though you are going from 5 wire to 5 wire I would still consider using a converter/isolator. As you noted the wiring on the bike is very small, the converter/isolator pulls power from the battery for the trailer lights. This way it does not mess with the bikes systems and any electrical failure on the trailer will not take out the bikes fragile electrical systems.

If the harleys were there, that means that all of the Venture riders were already there, ate their fill, and left..........

The best tire pressure will most likely be none of the above. The tire pressures listed in the owners manual are for the recommended tire. If you look at the recommended tires MAX COLD pressure, it will be higher than what the owners manual recommends. The same thing occurs on most anything with tires. When you make changes from the factory equipment you are then the tester to determine the proper operating conditions. By running the max pressure you will get slightly better gas mileage but are giving up traction since the tire will be harder so it will have a smaller contact patch with the road. Everything is a comprise. Since the weight that I am carrying on my bike is different than the weight you are carrying on your bike, even if we have the same tires, the ideal pressure will be different.

High Beam Indicator not working
Flyinfool replied to rstacy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
IF the RLU was working correctly it would light the white headlight indicator on the dash to tell you it had switched to low when you selected hi. But then the white bulb could be burnt out. Check to be sure you are actually getting hi when selected. -
You had to mention CL where I could see it..... Ya it works fine. Now I just spent mo money......

Looking for fuel petcock handle for 1985 Venture
Flyinfool replied to smegsjr's topic in Watering Hole
Do you actually use that valve? To be honest my handle could have vibrated off years ago and I would not have noticed. With the gas gauge working I just set it to reserve and forget about it. It is way to hard to reach and/or turn while driving. When the last bar on the gas gauge goes out and red light comes on, you have 1 gallon left, same as reserve. -
I'll bet he would rather have the root beer IN him than ON your but......

Electrical Issues TCI Bad Ground
Flyinfool replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
For that many unrelated tings to go wacky at the same time my guess would be a bad ground somewhere. Start by cleaning the ground at the battery and the the other end of the cable where it connects to the engine. At the neg battery terminal there is another smaller wire coming out of there, it goes to a small connector and then to another ground, check that ground point also. Those are the easy things to check. -
Need clutch Help!
Flyinfool replied to memmax's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Or you could slow down enough for a 2nd gen to catch you and then the clutch whine will drown out your rattle......... -
You weather up there looks delightful. scattered showers and cool temps. By the weekend most of the USA will be stupid hot and humid, and stay that way well into next week.

Need clutch Help!
Flyinfool replied to memmax's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Fortunately I have not had to tear this far into my 88 yet, so I can not help with your washer question. While you are/were in the clutch area you should have done the clutch spring upgrade if it hasn't been done already. The stock spring gets weak with time, not miles. You will first notice this as a slip of the clutch when at wide open throttle in 4th or 5th gear. IN the lower gears it is still slipping but you are to busy hanging on (and watching the second gens in your rear view mirrors:stickpoke:) to notice. -
For the 1st gen, make the high position a little higher than stock. Any chance of coming up with a way to add some kind of vent.

That sounds real scarrrrrry. I do not think I would try to assemble a piece of machinery while it is running. But glad you got it back together and still have all of your fingers.
-
Now that is just mean, It would not be nearly as mean to send the new kid in the shop to go and get the brass magnet....
-
Seeing as how Yamaha discontinued the windshield for the first gens last year, will you be coming out with anything thing to help us 1st geners out?

With a trailer that heavy there is always the option of adding electric trailer brakes. The brakes will at least get you back to the same stopping distance that you had with no trailer. You will still have the issues of all of that weight in cornering. I have read of people pulling 700+ lbs with a bike, but that is not recomended. I think it is in Japan the they have Gold Wings outfitted to be tow trucks to tow cars. But the trailers are set up with electric over hydraulic brakes and the the bike is not carrying any of the weight, just pulling it.
