  1. At least I removed the part about which side of the aisle the dog is on..... That should keep it around for at least an extra hour or two.......
  2. 13.8V @ 3000 is right where it is supposed to be. I would look for some dirty/corroded connections in the lighting circuits. The stock headlights on these bikes are awful, is it really dim or just needs more light output? How slow is slow for the turn signals?
  3. MY DOG http://us.f1614.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f935928%5fAPfTi2IAASTaTkflzAD1SkSaLx8&pid=2&fid=Inbox&inline=1 It's just dawned on me!! My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day. He has his food prepared for him. He can eat whenever he wants. His meals are provided at no cost to him. He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year if any medical needs arise. For this he pays nothing and nothing is required of him. He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep. If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up. He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep. He receives these accommodations absolutely free. He is living like a King, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever. All of his costs are picked up by others who go out and earn a living every day. I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick ........ I think my dog is a member of Congress
  4. My thought is that even if you have a jack and lug wrench packed in your trailer, they will be at the bottom of the pile. This means that you will have to unload most of the trailer just to get the jack and lug wrench out. As long as it is unloaded it is not that heavy to lift to get the wheel off. I am sure that if I took the lug nuts off first that I could lift the trailer and kick the tire off. To reinstall the tire you should be able to use the flat tire as a jack while you put on the spare. With my HF trailer, I store it standing on end, So I could also work on the tires with it stood up against a tree, road sign, big rock or whatever else was handy. All of this is assuming that you have no one around to help.
  5. It must have been a good BD. He never even found this thread.
  6. I have heard that many times to. If you do not manage to make contact then it is you that lost control and crashed by over compensating for what the other driver did. With my truck I have no problem getting a piece of the bum, but I am not sure how to do that head on with a bike and still be able to ever tell my side of the story.
  7. I want to see him make a turn around a corner in the city. And with 25 people on board and only 125cc to get it going. While it is neat and an accomplishment, Before I would call it a motorcycle it has to be able to something more than just a straight line.
  8. But some of us do not get channel 29, or any other channel for that matter.
  9. If the weather cooperates I will get 10 hours with just commuting to work. Commuting is 90% of my riding.
  10. :sign yeah that: :sign yeah that: I have found that by turning the turn signal on sooner, I have learned to get it to self cancel just as I am accelerating out of the turn. My understanding of the self cancel feature is that there are two things going on. One is just a simple timer that will turn off the signals after a fixed number of seconds. But this timer is only running when the bike is traveling at over a speed of 20-25 mph. So while you are sitting at a red light the timer will not run out and cancel while you are just sitting there. I have found that IF I actually come to a complete stop before the turn that the signal will self cancel as soon as I hit 20-25mph, which for me is about 3/4 of the way thru a turn. If you do a rolling stop like making a turn when the light is green then you are solely at the mercy of the timer. If you do some experimenting you can figure out just how much early you need to turn on the signal so that it will cancel at the correct time. The amount that is early is not excessive. in the city if I turn on the signal just as I cross the street prior to my desired turn, that cancels it right at the completion of the turn. On the freeway if I signal soon enough to get about 5-6 blinks before the lane change it will cancel pretty close to the end of the lane change. As far as making a self cancel that would really work in all conditions, you would be looking at something close to $300 each if made in quantity. There are a lot of variables that need to be considered. You would need gyros and accelerometers and speed sensors and timers and some software in a computer chip to try to calculate all of the variables. On the surface it sounds easy to do. Once you start to think of all of the different variables, it starts to get real complicated real fast. Or as Jeff said, you do have a thumb......
  11. Take it up to max pressure and start with the soapy water to find the leak. My 88 only needs the air in the suspension checked once in the spring when it comes out of storage. I have not had to add air to the rear shock for the last 2 years. The front needs 2 or 3 lbs added once a year.
  12. I first noticed it down a few minutes after 12:00 noon. With this site down it made me actually look like I had nothing to do at work. I was already cranky cuz I am not in Muncie IN on vacation right now, Then this site going down.......... There were nearly fatalities at work.
  13. OUCH! Naked bike pics on a PG site.
  14. Geez You guys have your colors all mixed up in the great white north. Here the colors are; Red and/or Blue is Police. Red and white is ambulance and fire White is school bus Yellow (amber) is tow trucks, snow plows, road work of any type, and just generally means caution. I have never seen or heard of a flashing green light used for anything on the road in the USA. But the green might clash with my Burgundy scoot. Green and red makes mud brown.
  15. Brad Glad you are OK. If you are still in Milwaukee and need help with anything let me know, I can try to help. I don't have much room to work but I do have some tools. I live on the south side of Milwaukee (I'm assuming you meant Milwaukee, WI).
  16. I can't believe that low compression in one cylinder would cause that much problem. There are many here (me included:whistling:) that have inadvertently left off 1 spark plug wire and rode quite a while before noticing the loss of power or change in the idle. That low compression cylinder should still be working, just not as hard. You should also look into why it is low on compression, Do you have a carb issue that is dumping gas in that cylinder and washing the oil off the walls? Is your oil level rising? Does your oil smell like gas? There is usually some reason for the rings in just one cyl to go bad.
  17. If you take it in for a repair estimate most places do not charge for that. At least none that I have dealt with. The forks could be very slightly bent and not be visible to the naked eye. I would also make sure that the bearings in the head and front wheel were not damaged, it does not take much to leave Brinell marks on the races.
  18. Are all of the materials for the job already on your property? They are yours, you paid for them. Are there any of his tools or equipment on your property, that could be a bargaining chip for at least a partial refund for work that was paid for but not done. You could just send him a certified letter with return receipt as proof that he did receive something from you that you claim was a cease work order. Since there is no completion date in the contract I do not know if you will be able recover and money paid to him or recover the cost of the new contractor as the cost of damages. Take lots of pics and make sure the time and date stamp is turned on. Take pics at the end of EVERY day whether or not any work got done. You need to be doing some of your own CYA. I think that any reputable contractor that is looking to finish this job will be understanding of your wish to have a completion date with penalties for being late written into the new contract. I would be wary of any that do not understand. Once you have him officially fired, contact every local referral service and the BBB. Maybe you can save someone else from the same Grief you are having. While you are talking to the local referral services find out about some good contractors. If all of the materials for the job are already there, expect the next contractor to bid high on the labor since he will not be making anything on the materials. You have a carrot of future work (if he does a good job cleaning up this mess) to try to get that cost down some. Good luck.
  19. I know that the ratios are a little different but would the gears from a MKI 1st gen drop in there? I just happen to have a set but it needs the 2nd gear fix to be done. But you will already be in there.
  20. Actually the closer the tank is to full the greater the force of a plugged vent will be. If you want to see how this happens, take a metal gallon jug, fill it with hot water, seal the cap, and put it in the frig over night. Gas is even worse because it expands and contracts from temp change even more than water does.
  21. If you can push the bike in 5th with the clutch engaged then it NOT a clutch problem. The slippage that you have in 4th says that is a clutch problem. You have two separate issues going on at the same time, very likely unrelated. One is the clutch, a minor issue. The other is 5th, You have a mechanical problem in there some where. I am not well enough versed on the workings of the trany to guess exactly what it might be.
  22. A plugged vent will do that. There is a thread on here on how to fix it.
  23. I agree except that it slipped and came back twice. A broken gear does not come back. The slipping is not very noticeable in 1st thru 3rd because the higher gear ratio lets the bike accelerate easier so the slip is not felt. It is still there, you just can not feel it.
  24. When you say it felt like neutral, did you let off the gas and the engine when to idle while you were still rolling at 55+? Other than this one part of your story, I agree with the others that you have the famous slipping clutch. It is possible that since you knew you were having issues you did baby it a lot more than normal which would help to account for the improved gas mileage and no slipping in 4th. When the clutch spring gets weak it is normal to have slipping in both 4th and 5th. It is also very important to use only oil made for use with a wet clutch or you will also get slipping. It will say on the bottle if it is. Putting in the heavy spring is a simple job. The first trip I took pulling a fully loaded trailer I never got above 4th and got better mileage than I normally do without the trailer. There is something to be said for letting an engine run where it is happy.
  25. YUP It just goes to show that If you do what a woman told you to do you will be in trouble, IF you don't do what you are told to do, you are still in trouble. I have learned to just do what ever I want because I'll get yelled at no matter what, I might as well get yelled at for doing something fun.
