A while back someone sued Harley because the steering wobbled and they lost control and crashed, BAD, when riding with no hands on the handle bar. I can't let go with both hands, my 88 will make a left turn right now.

I guess that the only time there would be weight on your but is for the hour or so during reentry and landing. How much padding do you need when weightless?

Glad you got both the problem and the answer sorted. Saved us from having to think up silly answers....... -
LED strip for front turn signals?
Flyinfool replied to geep's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
You mean kind of like this? http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54686 It is not terribly hard to do IF you have at least a clue about electricity. To my knowledge there is not a "module" that you can buy off the shelf anywhere to do this. If you do some google searches you can find a circuit to do it and then you just have to be able to build it. It sounds harder to build that what it really is. I have tons of ideas for additional lighting for my bike this winter. I already have TWO 5 meter roles of the LED light strips with 300 LEDs each. This is in addition to the 168 LEDs that I already added. Now I just have to figure out where to put them all. I had thought of adding a strip of chasing LEDs that ran the full length of the bike. If I make them chase forward it will make the bike look like it is going faster than it is. This should get a lot of attention from LEOs. If I make them chase from front to back, then it will make the bike look like it is moving slower than it is. This could get me run over by a cage. If I could figure out a way to synchronize the chase speed to the speed of the bike it will make the lights look like they are standing still no mater how fast I am going. Is any of this leagal? I doubt it. -
I did call the local police this morning. I spoke with a detective. They are not interested since I did not actually get taken. So much for crime "prevention".

What I have figured out so far. The battery is a 1400mAh. They claim 6 hours of heat from a charge. I am going to assume that this time would be on the low setting. After a little quick math that means that the jacket is drawing about 1/4 amp @ 12V. If my assumption is correct then it is most likely 1/2 amp at medium heat and 3/4 amp at full heat. Well withing the electrical capacity of our anemic electrical systems. the wattage of the jacket seems to 3, 6 or 9 watts. That is about the same amount of heat as one of the old fashion large Xmas tree bulbs. That does not sound like a lot of heat to me. Does anyone know the power of a heated jacket that is made for bikes? As far as performance, there is about a 6 inch square patch in the center of the back and two more 6 inch square patches behind the two chest pockets. these are the only areas that are heated. I have never owned a heated garment of any kind. is it normal and effective to only have a few patches of heat?

So I am out in the back yard working on the house. This white van pulls up and the driver asks if I am interested in some asphalt work. He says that he is doing a major job in the area and will have some leftover asphalt, just enough to do my gravel drive. He then pulls a magnetic sign out of the back seat to show me who he is and the sign says that his rate is only $4.65 per sq ft. He said that since I would be helping him out by using his excess material he would do my job for $2.00 per sq ft. Hmmm odd that a contractor would keep his magnetic sign in the back seat and not where it could do some good. Looking at the area I determind it to be 20 x 30 or 600 sq ft. I asked him if he agreed with my area assessment and he said yes. He then told me that he could do the job for just $1375. Red flag number one. I said that was still more than I could afford right now and he dropped the job to $1000. I thought that was interesting and asked if I could call him back later tonight to let him know. I then asked him for a business card. He said he did not have one with him. they were all in his other truck at the job site. What business owner does not keep his wallet stuffed with cards. Red flag number 2. I did get his name and phone number. The phone number was from Framingham MA. I am in WI. Why would a local contractor have an out of state phone number. Red flag no 3 As soon as I got in the house after finishing what I was working on, I got on the puter ad Googled William Stanley and the phone number and got scam alerts from all over the country. They even had his picture in a NJ courtroom getting convicted of the paving scam. OK now I have a boatload of red flags. After reading the scam stuff, this guys spiel matched right down to his name and picture. The way the scam works is that he offers to do cut rate work for a real good price. once you accept he shows up and does some work and then hits you with a drastically inflated bill of more than 10 times the agreed price. He then gets nasty and threatens to take a contractors lien on your property. This guy is constantly moving across state lines. I have instructed my GF that if anyone shows up to try to do work to not answer the door or talk to them, call 911 immediately and THEN call me at work.

Just to play devils advocate here. How far does your bike lean when parked on the side stand. If it is like mine it is very close to vertical and it does not take much to knock it over. Also since both stands are up maybe someone just went to sit on it and the weight got away from them. I'm NOT saying that it is OK for anyone to touch your bike. Just saying that it may not have been a malicious act. It could have fallen on its own.

Too bad, I bet you have traded MY carbtune for some labor to replace the stator. Changing the stator is not a real hard job. -
Maybe its one of them newfangled stealth helies that don't exist..... It sure looks like someone made an effort at a feeble attempt to disguise the shape.

TCI Removal
Flyinfool replied to ChurchBuilder's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I tried to use the rachet and screwdriver bit. That's when I found out the PO had stripped out the screw heads. I did manage to get the left screw out and then used a hacksaw blade to cut the right ear off. I relocated my TCI to the inside of the left faring next to the radio. -
Changing Oil, # Of Qrts.
Flyinfool replied to uechi kid's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The one thing that no one mentioned. Yes there is another drain plug. There is another sump under the tranny and the bottom screw of the middle gear cover, on the left side, is the drain plug for it. If you pull that screw you will get a little more oil out. that screw has a copper crush washer as a gasket that should be replaced after being removed. So if you want a lot of extra work, then pull the main drain plug with the bike level and drain the oil, remove the filter, then put the bike back on the side stand and pull the gearbox drain screw. It is only a few oz more oil that you will get out and it is in reality not worth the effort assuming that you are already adhering to a decent maintainance interval. The oil left behind should not be all that bad. If you are changing oil after some problem that caused contaminated oil, like a fried clutch, gas or coolant in the oil, then I would go the extra to drain the gearbox to get as much contaminant out as possible. How much oil goes back in will depend on if you have the stock filter or an after market spin on, and just how good of a job you did draining. I just aim for the center of the sight glass and that means that the correct amount of oil is in there, however much that might be. For me it is usually around 3.5 US quarts. -

anyone seen one of these "alarms"
Flyinfool replied to mike042's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think I would just remove it. If it is just those 3 wires, they are probably power, ground, and the connection to sound the horn. It might just be a tilt switch that will sound the horn if the bike is moved. Just make sure that it does not have something like a starter interrupt that will disable your starter or ignition if you remove it. -
All I did on my 88 was the brush plate ground mod (or at least my version of it). I no longer have any starting issues cold or hot. I still want to do the 4AWG welding cable upgrade. When I had my starter out it was very clean inside and there was next to no wear at all on the com or the carbons. But then the bike only has 45K miles on it.

Look great. Sounds like good news that all is well. But what is that circlip laying on the ground under the side of the tranny?????? . . . . . . . . -
Even if I had that wing strapped to my back, you aint gonna git me to jump off or out of a perfectly good aircraft. Nope not me...... Knowing what those engines are, and looking at the size of the fuel tanks, I would guess that he can get 7-10 minutes of power depending on throttle usage.

I do my part. I have been stuffing prepaid return envelopes with garbage for many years. I usually have to tape the envelope shut cuz I pack in to much junk to be able to lick and seal the flap. With telemarketers it is almost always the challenge to see just how long I can keep them on the phone. I never forward junk emails. If it had a good joke in it, I might strip out the actual joke and start a new clean email and always strip out anything that resembles the part of "send this to 10 people or else".

There is a reason his flight suit is yellow......... The engines used are the same ones that are popular on radio control model jets. I have a jet with one of those engines in it. This guy is nuts. But then I do have my private pilots license and flying is a lot of fun.
