  1. But it is a riot. After a 1.5 hour plus battle with an approx 30 inch musky in a river on the 12 footer with 2 lb line, and no one had a camera around the DNR warden that was there told me just after I released the fish that I probably just threw a line weight record back in the river. But it happened to be near 100° day and I just tossed my wallet to my buddy and jumped in the river and chased that fish a good half mile up and down the river, my tiny reel only had 100 yards of line. There was a lot of cheering when I finally landed it. I had a 1/64oz jig with a quarter of a night crawler. it was just the snack that fish wanted at that moment. I have caught more muskies with a night crawler than any other bait. That was by far the biggest fish I have landed with that setup. I had bragging rites in camp for quite a while after that one.
  2. Ok I think it time for a carb rebuild. I have never had much luck with rebuilding carbs on anything. But here is whats happening. First there was all of the above issues. Ever since ten I have noticed that the starting procedure has changed. It was always, half to full choke depending on temp hit the starter and it was running, wait a minute or so for it to warm up, open the choke and go. This year if I use the choke at all it will instantly flood. This I determine by a strong gas smell and the only way it will start is with the choke open, full throttle, hit the starter and in about 10-15 seconds of cranking it will fire, I must then immediately close the choke for the normal warm up. Today on the way home from work I made a stop, when I came back to the bike there was a very strong gas odor around it. I was only gone 15 minutes so it was still hot. I made a quick check for any obvious leaks and found none. But it would not start, It smelled and acted flooded, after nearly killing the battery and cranking at full throttle it finally coughed, spit and sputtered its way to life. After that it ran fine for the rest of the way home. SOooooo.......... I am agreeing with some kind of float issue. I do have a new set of diaphragms that I bought this winter. What else should I plan to have on hand before I start tearing stuff apart. I will be asking a lot of questions and be needing some hand holding to get thru this. I am assuming everything in the carbs and fuel system is original from 87. I plan to replace all lines and the filter "while I am there". (4 words that ALWAYS get me in trouble). I hate carb work. Earl, I may need to add to that order I just placed.
  3. All the more reason to be using the 12' crappie pole. The 12' pole will outcast any 5.5 foot rod and is even more of a blast when that big smally shows up, or even better yet a musky or northern and you are loaded with 2lb line.
  4. It aint the ethanol. You can call BS. Here in Milwaukee the home of the rattlecan we have only ethanol gas. If it was making the hardly just stop they would be piled so high on all the roads that nothing but a rock climber would be able to get thru town. I agree on most likely electrical. Electrical is about the only think that will make it just shut off other than a catastrophic internal failure.
  5. That is correct, But you want to paint inside and out so 800 sq ft. I am hoping you have more than one wall............ New block will soak up paint like a sponge, so it will need more still. Talk to the contractor and read your paint can about how long the mortar must cure and dry before painting.
  6. You should not have to fill the vacuum reservoir, you should have to fill the master and empty the vacuum reservoir. Yes you should crack the bleeder about a half to a full turn while using the vacuum, once there are no more bubbles you then must close the bleeder before testing the clutch. as far as "So why can't I get more clutch??" what exactly do you mean by more clutch? Is the clutch not holding? Not releasing? If you have a leak, you really want to find it because brake fluid will damage most things it drips on.

  12. The old oil can contain contaminates like water and/or acids. I would drain the oil and store it empty. And like Jeff said, fog the cylinders and coat everything you can with some oil.
  13. I keep my parts/spare engine in the basement which is temp and humidity controlled so rust/corrosion is not an issue. As mentioned stuff an oily rag or paper towel into any open ports to keep dust bugs and other junk out. I would leave it assembled as much as possible, less ways for contaminates to get in.

  15. You could try heading this way to. The whole weekend was sunny and mid 70s F (mid 20s C). Not bad for winter in Wisconsin. I think I kind of like this global warming thing as long as it does not also mean that summer will also be 40°F above normal.

  18. WOW While that certainly does look functional it certainly does not look efficient for either horse power or gas mileage. Exhaust flow does not like to make that very sharp turn around.
  19. I believe, I believe! I have some guns that just called to me, and there was no way I could leave the store without rescuing it. Kind of like Yammer and a 1st gen sitting out in a yard with a for sale sing on it......... Talk about being in heat.......... I once just had to buy a special gun for one specific deer. Got that deer with that special gun where no other could do the job, but have not NEEDed that gun since. It is still nice to know that the tool is there if ever needed. Still looking to have that special moment and bond for a new CC gun....... Speaking of which, there was a news report on the radio this morning of a guy who fell asleep with a gun in his pocket and shot himself in the leg. Talk about a rude awakening.
  20. The negative battery terminal is the best possible place for a ground wire to end up. On my bike I have added a terminal block near the battery for the ground wires of all of the stuff I have added. Whenever I do wiring on a trailer I always run the ground wire to each and every light. I do have a frame ground but it is only to prevent any static buildup from pulling thru the air. I have worked on a lot of trailers with weird acting lights over the years, 90% were from rust in a ground connection causing anything from a poor to no connection or even the dreaded intermittent connection. If you do use a frame ground you MUST make very sure that it has corrosion protection or you will have the bad ground blues in a couple of years. When I do have to do a frame ground on a vehicle I always grind down to bare shiny metal on both sides of the frame, make the connection as you did with a star washer and then completely seal the connection on BOTH sides of the frame and up onto the wire, with an electrical grade of RTV to try to keep the rust away as long as possible.
  21. I do have a private pilots license. BUT You may also want to talk to a travel agent, explain the situation and they can keep an eye open for a short notice flight. Start making calls to airlines that fly to where you need to be. Some of them will sometimes do special things for family emergencies, (or at least they used to). Some one with something like a Cessna 172 is looking at a minimum of 2 days to fly from Indiana to Oregon. It is 2000 mile in a dead straight line which will not happen thru the mountains. Cruising speed is about 120 mph air speed. So at best you will get 100 mph ground speed. Thats 20+ hours in the air not including detours for weather gas and mountains, add in a fuel stop every 4 hours, and you can see where it will easily take 2 days to get there. Flying myself there would not be the fast or inexpensive way to get there.
