Flywheel bolt question
Flyinfool replied to Dragonslayer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OK, Curiosity is getting the best of me. HOW did you manage to bugger the threads in the crankshaft???? -
McMaster-Carr On left of page select your thread. MSC Direct Enco There you go, lots to choose from Wow I must type slow.........

I cannot get it into neutral
Flyinfool replied to ChurchBuilder's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ok, someone has to ask the obvious. Is your shift linkage installed the right way. It can be installed backwards so that while you think you are looking for neutral between 1st and 2nd you are actually trying to find neutral between 4th and 5th. -
I sure wish they would have one around here. It always seems that they are a days ride away from me.

class air system need help
Flyinfool replied to cfrasure's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Even though you can not see the cracked solder joints they can still be there. As long as you have the board out and looking at it just go ahead and add a tiny amount of fresh solder (use non acid flux) to all of the joints. -
Dont talk about it, dont hint about it. The male brain is not designed to pick up on such things. Come right out and tell him to work on what needs work and then tell him to go for a ride.

Floor Boards - Where or How?
Flyinfool replied to thirdbike's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There have been a lot of threads over the years of people that have tried boards and went back to pegs. If you do some looking and searching you may be able to find those threads and contact some of those people to see if they sold their boards yet. I seem to remember that for a while there was almost a community set of boards making the rounds. Someone may have finally decided they liked them and ended the travels of the boards. -
Why would you think that, my bed liner is always dirty....... But I do find this whole thing interesting, I hate chrome but have never found a good way to cover it. The only time I ever had any success with covering chrome was the chrome front fender on an old Yami 650 that I painted black to match the rest of the bike. I did that by starting with a power sander and 80 grit to "scuff" the surface.

I am even thinking that when I win this one that I will take the $18MIL per year for life (30 Years) just so I do not have to figure out where to store all of that money while I spend every last penny. It might be rough learning to live on a fixed income but I think I'll manage. Hmmmmmmmm.......... Some how I think there will be a lot of volunteers to help me "store" it.

I am looking at getting a trail camera used for deer hunting to use it as a security cam for a remote location with no power, internet or anything else. The hunting type trail cams is all I can think of. Small, Camo colored to hide in a tree, made to be outdoors, runs on batteries. motion activated, IR flash for night time. Does anyone have any experience with which ones actually work decent without costing a fortune. If they spot the cam I am sure it will either get shot or stolen or both. Twice in the last 2 weeks bullets have been put thru the shed, took out a front tire and a fuel jug, one just missed the engine. it is deliberate since shell casings have been found right next to the shed. About a dozen shots so far. Would love to be able to hand the police a pic of whom they need to pick up.

You are right, I forgot about these being Linear regulators where Amps in equals Amps out. But I was also under the impression that they had internal protection to to limit total power. It would be really nice if these new regulators were switching regulators so that power in equals power out. Switching regulators typically run very cool and very efficient, but can leave some ripple on the output. Dang electronics, you never get something for nothing, everything is a compromise. While you can partially check the diodes in the RR, by checking the 3 inputs with an ohm meter using both polarities. It is my understanding that you can identify if a diode has failed short but not one that has failed open. This is because the output side of the rectifier is internal to the RR so It can not be probed. My new style HO stator and RR should be here Thursday. I'll do some looking to check it out best I can. There is nothing wrong with the stator and RR that I am removing other than I need more available power to add more toys, gadgets, lights and doo-dads.

Length is not an issue for towing with a bike. To a point. Total width, weight and wind resistance are more of the factors. With what you are looking to do you will probably get pretty heavy for a bike to pull. It is not as much the ability to pull it as it is the ability to stop it. If you do this I would add a set of 7" electric brakes to the trailer. I am considering adding the electric brakes to my little tag a long. There will be those that say the stopping is no issue, just maintain a greater distance in front of you to allow for the increased stopping distance. This is true and should be followed. BUT this will not help you when someone pulls out in front of you or a kid comes flying out from behind a parked car, or something else unpredictable happens and you really do need to stop fast. It will also be necessary to make sure all equipment is well secured since a sudden weight **** of trailer cargo that would not bother a car or truck can upset a MC. I say go for it, CAREFULLY.

Actually running a stock RR on a HO stator means that the stator will never have to work for a living. Because the stator has more out put capability than the RR can use the RR will only allow so much power so the stator will never get to use its max capability. Hence running nice and cool.

Some day when I grow up I hope to be able to fly like that............ Oh wait, I might be to old already to be able to fly like that.....

Stator replacement
Flyinfool replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Those are way low numbers. all 3 sets should be within 0.1V. Any wire pair should be around 20 VAC. If the stator can not give the RR at least 16V, the RR can not hold 14V output. It looks like you have either a bad stator or a bad wire connection. 2 of the 3 windings are not carringing there share of the load, the single winding that is still working will let you have yor 14V but as soon as there is any load added the votage falls off. There are additional tests that you can do on the stator to help confirm for sure that it is the problem. These tests are in the service manual in the tech section. If I get a chance I'll try to find it tomorrow. Unless someone else beats me to it. It is still possible that 1 or more diodes in the RR has failed and are pulling the stator voltage down. Thats why you still need to do some more tests. All you have proven so far is that you do have a serious electrical problem.
