It sounds like the garage is a better workout than the gym. The garage is making your poor old muscles do REAL coordinated work instead of the fake work from the gym.

Trailer Wiring
Flyinfool replied to Stache's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I would put a ring terminal on that frame grounding stud and still run separate ground wires. In order to have a good frame ground you must scrape off all of the paint to get a good solid metal to metal contact. Of course that bare metal will quickly rust and you will have ground issues down the road. But then a bad trailer ground should never cause a fuse to blow. You need to figure out what wire is connected to the wrong place first. Double check your wiring, it is common for the converter wire colors to not match the bike wire colors. On a RSV bike; Black - Ground Yellow - Brake Blue - Running Brown - Left turn Green - Right turn Standard colors for a trailer hookup are. These are most likely the colors coming out of your converter on the bike side, but check your instructions to verify. White - Ground Blue - Brake Brown - Running Yellow - Left turn Green - Right turn Some converters have another fused wire that goes to bikes battery. Sometimes Black and sometimes Red, depending on brand and model. The output of the converter to the trailer and the trailer wiring should be; White - Ground Brown - Running Yellow - Left turn/brake green - Right turn/brake -
Another new way to mount stuff on a 1st gen handlebar.

Here is the drawing if you want to use it. -
What Dave said. My employer wanted to take my pic for publicity and I strongly expressed that I did not wish it. None of the pics turned out usable. I aint pretty to begin with, but when I want to, I can be real nonphotogenic.

I think that for that kind of money I would rather have an actual amphibious airplane.

I was thinking along the lines of drilling and tapping and counter boring the exposed end to put in a hex socket head cap screw with red Loctite. This way you would have a hex drive for install and removal and no visible drive on the outside of the Snagglebar. Unless of course you have access to the technology to make a hex hole into the end of the bar. -
Yes there is such a thing as a tap extension. http://www1.mscdirect.com/eCommerce/NavigationServlet?ta=Y&N=12106021

OUCH! I do not know what would cause half of the stator to cook like that. If it was a short in one winding it would take out every third coil all the way around. The only thing I can think of is, the stator is cooled by engine oil that comes out the center of the flywheel that somehow that cooling oil was blocked from getting to that half of the stator.

I have never changed a bulb and not had to readjust the headlight aiming. -

So are there any other WI riders or others that might be passing thru WI that want to met up for the ride to Dons? At the moment my plan is to leave real early Friday morning to clear Chicago before them Ilinesian folks get up and hit the road and anything they can find on the road.

True, but some of the bikes other than Harleys and 2nd gens might give us a run for our money as to who leads.......

Best switch for the HID light
Flyinfool replied to 1BigDog's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Unlike regular lights LEDs have a polarity, fortunately if you hook them up backwards, nothing bad happens, they just don't light up (the flashing LED is an exception to this, hooking it up backwards will let out the magic blue smoke). Also most LEDs do not run on 12V so you ned to add a dropping resistor in series with the LED. The value of the dropping resistor will depend on the LED being used, they are not all the same voltage. For the flashing red LED from Radio Shack I used a 330 ohm 1/4W resistor. As far as the wiring of the switch I tapped into the headlight wire just before the dimmer switch. This way I am not switching the headlight power and I'm using the relays that are already built into the HID. With the HID the headlight power is no longer running thru the bikes electrical system, it has its own fused power lead right to the battery. You could do the exact same thing by cutting the power wire for the HID but then you should also add a relay to handle the high power. So to add the switch and LED it would be; Cut wire that supplies power to dimmer switch. Connect the positive side of the LED/resistor to one of the outside terminals of the switch. Other end of LED/resistor to ground. Other outside terminal of switch to wire from dimmer switch. Center terminal of switch to other end of headlight wire that you just cut.- 27 replies

Start by checking the battery voltage with a meter directly across the battery with the ignition on. If it is less than 12V then you need to charge it and figure out why the bike is not charging it. It could be as simple as a dirty connection. Don't forget that it could be a corroded connection at either end of the battery cables. This is the easy part to check.

Finally got my wife to ride the 85 VR with me.
Flyinfool replied to spitfire9's topic in Watering Hole
I have had my Venture for 4 years now. Still trying to talk the better half into going for a ride. The ride would have to start at the bike shop to find her at least a helmet. None of my old ones fit her right. She is deathly afraid of bikes since she had a bad wreck as a teen when her boyfriend at the time turned his head and said watch this.......... ........3 months later she got out of the hospital. It has also been 20+ years since I have had a passenger. She is weakening, I think one day she will get on for a short ride to test the waters. I have a couple of trips planned for this summer, she does not like to be left alone. -
I would still run at least some electric out there. At least a 20A circuit to have lights and some battery maintainers...... It gonna be real dark if you have to get something in or out at night.

A good reason to hooking the amp meter direct to battery.
Flyinfool replied to GolfVenture's topic in Watering Hole
OK you had me cornfused for a bit. You installed a digital volt meter, not a digital amp meter. According to the wiring diagram that main fuse is a 40 Amp. I carry more than 1 spare for ALL the fuses on the bike. You can blow several fuses while trouble shooting a problem on the side of the road. The 2 most likely things that will blow the main fuse are; 1. A wire in the harness before the fuse panel get rubbed, or pinched and shorts to ground. 2. You add enough lights and accessories to actually pull more than 40 Amps to blow the main fuse. -
Just remember, the Harleys do not have enough horse power to be in front of you if you don't want them there.

Collector woes

If you get it welded up again, pay the little bit extra to have them use all stainless steel parts and welding wire. Like the factory did.
