  1. It was not just rumor. The ones I made were out of 1045 steel. The first one did break in half. Not sure if it is because it was to weak or user error. I have since added more metal to the weak area. There has not yet been a chance to try the newest version. I have read about a few of the OEM ones breaking to. That is why everyone that has a shim kit to loan out has the disclaimer that if you break the tool you replace it. I think that even 7075-T6 aluminum will be to soft and may not even last thru one cycle of replacing all of the shims before it wears out on the ramps. Aluminum rubbing on sharp edges of hardened steel does not last long. The cost of the tool is not in the material, it is in the labor and tooling. It would take almost as long for me to make one out of aluminum as it did out of steel. There is actually a lot of force on that poor little tool.
  2. Orlin you may be new to this site but you are far from a rookie at hosting a great event. You should have volunteered to host it sooner......
  3. Here is a whole bunch of info http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=55831
  4. I had an old Garmin that kept flashing a message on the screen that the battery was bad, even after putting in fresh new batteries. I called Garmin to find out what it meant. The guy on the phone said that is to warn that the internal battery that maintains the memory while you are changing batteries has gone bad. He then asked for the serial number and said "hell that is only 8 years old, that battery should last a lot longer than that". They warantied it at no cost other than what I paid to ship mine to them. They were able to retrieve all of my data and tranfer it to a bran new unit, and shipped it back to me next day air at no charge. The new unit had a lot more features than the old one and was a lot faster at figuring out where I was. Is it a wonder all of my GPSs are Garmin?
  5. That is what all of mine look like. I did the leak check and they are not leaking. I was told that that cracking is just cosmetic since there is metal on the inside right there. I used carb cleaner for the check since it is less messy than spraying the engine down with oil. At least I made a clean spot in the process.
  6. Cub cadet is much newer and was designed to handle the crap gas. The first gens wee designed and built prior to the invention of crap gas.
  7. Another first ride???? Sounds like more CRS...... Glad you got out though!
  8. Anyone can get CRS syndrome...... Most just don't admit to it.
  9. Sounds like time for a MSF course...... and a shopping spree..... Lucky you!! I sure wish I could talk mama into at least trying a ride. But I can also respect her valid reasons for fear and don't push it to hard.
  10. Yesterday was a real nice day. When I got home from work I was asked why I was so late, My answer was that the bike needed gas, even though I bought gas the day before. So then there were some letters that had to be postmarked that day so I jumped on the bike for the 1 mile trip to the post office. 3 hours later I got home.......... The house was dark, the boss had gone to bed already. For some reason I needed gas again on the way in to work today......... I don't know how that happens....... I was still getting dirty looks this morning as I was getting ready for work. But I feel so much better. I might just need more gas to get home today........
  11. Next thing you know Eileen will be on this site as a regular......... Don, I think she wants one of her own.........
  12. The ONLY thing that you can predict about deer is that they are unpredictable. Expect to see them 24/7. Expect them to do the unexpected. Well there is one other thing you can predict, how tasty they are on a charcoal grill.........
  13. Physical size determines the tone. If you want it to sound like a semi or a train then you need something that big, There's just no getting around the laws of physics. If you want it to sound like a train..... Might be tricky to mount......
  14. I was just going to order a set from Earl, But now you guys are starting to make it sound like a challenge.....
  15. pictures don't lie........
  16. 13.5V @ 4K is a little low. Check and clean both ends of all of the wires to the battery and the main fuse and the connectors in and out of the regulator.
  17. I have seen liquid electrical tape used successfully as a a temporary repair for a diaphragm if the holes weren't to big. Seafoam and carb clean will not help a small passage that is totally blocked. Only removal and a rebuild will help that. Seafoam is not the same thing as carb clean. Seafoam contains a cleaner, a lubricant, and a gas drier. Start at the beginning. Are you getting gas into the carbs? Open the drain screw to see if there is anything in the float bowl. With the drain open turn on the key, the fuel pump should run for about 2 seconds and gas should come out of the drains. The fuel pump makes a clicking noise when it runs. Mine is pretty quiet so you have to listen for it.
  18. Curious? What load are you putting on the battery for your load test and still getting 13+ volts under load?
  19. Seafoam is your friend. Add a full can of Seafoam to about a quarter tank of gas. and get it running for 10-15 minutes, shut it off for 24 hours to soak and start it up the next day and once a day till it is drivable take it for a good hard ride till it needs gas. This is the cheap and easy attempt at a fix. If the carbs are really plugged up you will have to pull them and rebuild. Check the diaphragms for pin holes, in the process of checking the diaphragms you can also verify that the sliders are not stuck. If this really sat for 23 years with out being ridden, it will take a lot of TLC to get everything good. You may really want new tires before trying a ride.
  20. NOOOOooooooo......... The last 3 times I went to EAA show I had my checkbook out of my pocket and in my hand and an airplane ALMOST came home with me. I can not afford to attend that show anymore..... It is about 180 miles from Galena to EAA. There is nothing for hotel or camping space available within 50 miles of EAA. EAA attendees stay as far as 100 miles away.
  21. Here in Wisconsin trailers under 3,000 lbs GVW do not need to get tags. You can get them if you want to, IIRC its $12 / year. I have heard of people with no trailer tags getting hassled in states that do require tags. Not common but if the LEO is having a bad day...... My trailer is not plated and I have pulled it thru states requiring tags with no issues. I would think the first thing to do is to find out if you really want to ship it home.
  22. As with any chemical, it depends on the plastic. Nail polish is solvent based, different brands have different solvents, ABS is easily melted with many solvents. Test on an inconspicuous spot and dont get carried away with the application.
  23. Not like I have to tell ya, but don't forget ALL of the ice cream stops....:essen_018: :essen_018:
  24. The plastic safe Loctite is NOT basically superglue. Superglue will attack most plastics also. When referring to Loctite products you should always refer to the part number. There are dozens of different Loctite thread lockers and only 6 colors. What I normally use is; Red = 263 blue = 243 Green = 290 Most of us use; Red = 262 Blue = 242 Green = ? Many people use one of the 7 different green bearing retainers as a thread locker. The green Loctite 290 is designed to be applied AFTER the parts are assembled. The plastic safe Loctite is # 425 and it is a blue color. I am not sure if it is ABS safe. the Loctite data sheets part of their site is down rite now. I just do not use any thread locker anywhere near ABS.
  25. The louvers pop out pretty easy, if you still have them and you didn't break them, there not that hard to put back in. Hmmmmmmm...... I'm is gonna hafta start watching where I park..........
