Quick and dirty tests. Start by fully charging the battery. Check the voltage with the engine off and again with the engine at 2,000 or higher. Engine off you should have at least 12.0V withe the engine running, If you have less than 12V, most likely it is a bad battery that is not covered by Yamaha warranty. But since the battery is fairly new its waranty should cover it. Have it load tested. Engine running you should have around 14V, if not, back to dealer. test two, if you have a lighted circuit tester. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Connect the tester from the neg bat terminal to the neg battery lead. If the light is visible at all, even if very dim in the dark, then you have something on the bike that is pulling power. Take out the fuses one by one till you find the culprit. Don't forget any fuses that you may have added for accessories. Once you determine that it is not something you did, then back to dealer.

My first venture problem
Flyinfool replied to jeremy_abfalter's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Most likely the #2 cylinder. The tach gets its signal from the #2 ignition circuit. Intermittent issues are the worst to find. I would start by cleaning and checking all of the connectors in the ignition circuit. Yes they are a PITA to get to. -
There is an aftermarket replacement available, I think it was Dingy that put one on his bike. I don't remember the maker.

Be sure to go to the DQ website to find a PARTICIPATING DQ. I will have to drive right past 4 DQs to get to the nearest participating DQ. :essen_018: :essen_018: :essen_018: :essen_018: :essen_018: -
Well then we fixed another problem for you.

As long as you have the rear wheel off, be sure to clean and grease the pins while you are there. If you are taking it in, most shops will not do the grease unless you ask.

First you have to enter the forum where you want the thread to appear. In the second blue row above click the forum button on the left end. This will give you a list of all of the forums that are on this site. Choose the one that seems most appropriate for your question and click on it. There will then be the "New Thread" button at the top left. See and we didn't even bite,,,,,,,,yet.......

Welcome back Whew,,,,, I was worried that you were turning into a deadbeat.......... Where else can you get good help and good natured harassment at the same time??

Did you try the yellow pages? There are about 30 chrome platers in a 30 mile radius of me. Pay them a visit and talk to them, ask for references, If they have been in business for a long time they don't do that by messing stuff up.

Most you can check yourself. Tires - While the tread may still be good, how old are they. They are at least 7 years old maybe more, if original. There should be a date code stamped into the side of each tire. Carb sync - It is easy to hook up with a member here to get that done for just the cost of a beverage or some ice cream. Stearing head bearings - sometimes they just need tightening. Look close at all rubber parts and seals, the bike spent most of its life just sitting. Sitting is harder on some parts than riding. Grease splines and pins in rear - they are notorious for not being greased properly from the factory. Not much else that I can think of, but then I don't ride a 2nd gen either. I'm sure others will chime in.

When you take it apart just measure all of the friction discs. A new disc is 3.00mm (.1181 inch) thick. The wear limit for a completely worn out disc is 2.80mm (.1102 inch) thick. not much of a difference there. When I did mine at 45K miles, all of the discs measured 2.95mm (.1165 inch) thick so I put them all back in. I fixed mine after the very first slip, if you are slipping for a while it is possible to have completely worn out the clutch. If the discs are good then the steel plates should also be good. If the discs are worn then you need to also check the steels for wear.

Weird Verizon Wireless bills.... scammy smelling?
Flyinfool replied to Snaggletooth's topic in Watering Hole
It could be good for a laugh, but if you do, be sure to kill all of the links first so that she does not accidentally try to pay it or give her info to the scammers. The aftermath of that would not be fun. -
Out of gas?
Flyinfool replied to lwinders's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Since the pick up is at the bottom of the tank anyhow, if it was plugged, adding more gas would not make a difference. Have you ever changed your fuel filter? If it was junk in the gas there should be evidence of it in the filter. It could be the pump going. Maybe after cooling down some it came back to life? While you were coasting in gear when it first lost power, did you notice if the tach was registering the rpm. The tach is driven from the #2 cylinders ignition. If the tach went to zero as soon as you lost power that could indicate an ignition issue. Again the cool down could have revived it. Just a couple of thoughts.- 6 replies

A lot depends on exactly what plastic it is made from. Many (not all) car toppers are made from polyethylene. There is nothing that will stick well to polyethylene. The process that I have found that works best is; 1. Wash with dawn dish soap and water. 2. Wash with alcohol and put on gloves. now that it is clean you do not want to make any fingerprints by touching the plastic with skin. 3 .Sand thoroughly with 220 grit. yes it will be fuzzy. 4. Knock the fuzz off with 400 grit, just enough to knock off some of the fuzz, you want to leave the scratches from the first sanding. All of those scratches is what the paint will be trying to hang on to. 5. Wash with alcohol again. 6. Apply a coat of plastic bumper primer per instruction on the can. 7. Apply a light but complete coat of sandable primer in a color that contrasts with the color of primer that you want under the paint. 8. Apply a medium coat of sandable primer in your choice of color. 9. Wet sand with 400 wet/dry, do NOT sand thru the first coat of primer, that is why you want a contrasting color so that you know when you are getting close. watch your edges. 10. From this point you have a good base to continue with your favorite prime and paint process. A bleach bottle is the same material and good to practice the process on.

That is why I like gravel. A golf ball will still dent a hood or take out a radiator, and it will be the only one around. There is gravel everywhere, really hard to even find the right stone, and then who is to say it did or did not come off a tire.
