stater magnet STUCK!
Flyinfool replied to Black wing's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You can disagree, but you can not change the laws of physics. The vibration that the magnets put up with during normal use is a sinusoidal wave form. That means it is a smooth motion back and forth. This will not bother the magnets. A sharp impact like a hammer blow can damage the magnets by causing the magnetic poles to try to align with the earths magnetic field. Remember the old science experiment in school? Where you take a nail, hold it in your hand and smack it with a hammer, it becomes a magnet. You are doing the same thing to the magnets in the flywheel when they see a sharp impact. You are changing their magnetic field. The heat the the flywheel sees in normal use is not all that hot, it is well under 200°F at all times. The magnets start to loose power at 400°F. Heating the flywheel to 200°F will not have much if any effect on the fit of the taper, If it did there would be flywheels getting loose all of the time. Hot enough to make a difference, will conduct out toward the magnets possibly weakening them if they get to 400°F. My impact wrench was not near enough torque to break mine loose. Your impact wrench may be stronger than mine or my flywheel may have been tighter than yours. I turned the puller screw a good half turn or more past where the impact could go before it POPed. If I were doing it again, I would start with the impact wrench, If it did not come I would get out the breaker bar and pipe. The good news is; The big difficulty is only if this is the first time the flywheel has ever come off, any time after it will be a lot easier. I do not know if the factory torques the bolt to more than the book calls for, or if it is just from being there for 25 years and is well seated. -
what does this look like
Flyinfool replied to pmelah's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It sure looks like it got a bit warm. That coil getting hot would be from an excessive power draw on which ever circuit it was monitoring. (I don't remember which coil was for which circuit. CRS syndrome) As long as non of the traces on the back side are damaged, that coil getting hot most likely will not damage anything. If that is from your bike, you will want to find out what was pulling so much power to make it get that hot. A fuse should have blown before it got that hot. -
stater magnet STUCK!

First off, do NOT use heat or pounding on the rotor, As mentioned you can permanently damage the magnets. Then You will be chasing a charging issue for the next year till you figure out it is the magnets causing weak output of the stator. I tied a rope from the puller to the bike frame so that when it did POP it could not go anywhere. Most people just make a nice soft landing pad. when the flywheel does POP it does it with a BANG and it will cover some distance in the process. I don't know if I would want to try to catch it. I used a big wrench on the hex of the flywheel to hold it steady and a 3 foot breaker bar plus some pipe, on the puller drive. My 1/2 inch drive impact wrench was laughed at by the flywheel. Wear safety glasses just in case one of the hardened parts of the puller shatter during the pull. Many cheap pullers, and some good ones, have been broken pulling off that flywheel. I have one that I bought 30 years ago back when they made tools strong to last. A gear puller with the grip fingers will not get it done, I do not think any of them are strong enough. You need a good harmonic balance puller and you want to use grade 12.9 screws to attach it to the flywheel. Use high strength washers under the screw heads. the 3 attaching screws only should be finger tight, if you use a wrench on then then they already have some tensile load and will fail sooner while pulling. Make sure that you put a big enough high strength washer or other piece of steel to protect the threads of the crankshaft from the puller. I used that big breaker bar and pulled till I was sure something was going to break and then went some more till it finally let go. -
I just carry a folding lug wrench. IF I ever have to change a tire on the road the plan is to first unload the trailer, then break loose the lugs, then unhook the coupler and tip it onto its side to R&R the wheel, then tip back upright, hook to the bike, and tighten the lugs and reload. If the surface was such that I was concerned about scratching the trailer, I will use the sleeping bag or pillow under the trailer. If thee is a convenient tree, wall, or post I can stand it up on the back bumper, I store it standing on the back bumper leaning against a wall. Since I have the spare mounted to the bottom of the trailer to keep it out of the way, I almost have to tip it on its side to get at the spare anyhow.

Find out more about the accident that it was in. Many bikes are totaled with only cosmetic damage. BUT if any of the suspension was damaged and repaired you would want to look closely at the frame mounting points for damage or repair. With damage to both sides there is a possibility that the bike tumbled and could have hidden structural damage. Also check you state laws as to what is involved if you were to try to resell it some day. I am not saying to stay away from it, just do your homework and check things out throughly. It is easy to fall in love with something and overlook things that should not be overlooked.

You may need rib protection and a cup also..........

I had a similar experience. Stopped at the grocery store where Erika was going to just run in quick for something. She knows that because of the size of my truck I always park at the back of the lot so I can hog 2 spaces and not upset to many people. Well she went into the store and I was parked in a place where I could see the checkouts, so when I saw her getting done I tried to be a nice guy and pulled right up to the door for her. As she came out the door she gave me a dirty look because my truck was blocking her path to the parking lot, she walked around my truck and headed up the isle to where I normally park. Sooo being the nice guy that I am I followed about 10 feet behind her all of the way to the back of the lot where she was getting visibly POed that I was not there. She did not realize I was right behind her till she turned around to head back to the store since it was a little drizzly out. She almost walked into the front of the truck before she realized it was me. I could not help but to be laughing out loud, She got me to quit laughing quick enough... I didn't think my truck was that hard to see........

starter idler gear
Flyinfool replied to jwox's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It is common for that connector to melt. It does not mean that the stator is going bad. It happens when you get some corrosion on the contacts causing a bad connection. The bad connection then generates heat. Enough heat to melt the connector housing. Most people just eliminate the connector and solder the wires together, and cover each connection with shrink tubing. -
Fortunately mine is frozen in the RES position, I have no reason to ever try to move it.

It looks like a shiny spot on the sides of 2 of the teeth on the broken section, Like someone was prying on it or whacked it with a hammer. I have no clue as to why you would have to do either. I do not know which rebuild kits on ebay you are referring to. You will need 3 gaskets to put this back together. You can NOT just use a liquid gasket, you need the gasket thickness for proper internal clearances. Side cover gasket Middle gear cover gasket Crush washer. As long as that cover is off take a good look at the stator, if any of the coils look burnt, now is the time to replace it. -
Fork seal driver?
Flyinfool replied to Adavidson56304's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Once upon a time, I thought there was a traveling seal driver floating around. Anyone know who ended up with it? I think it was Bob Myers that made it? -

How many demerits are there for trading a Venture for a hardley? -
Some how I do not think she was "patiently" waiting....... Although it is a smidgen harder to notice someone missing from the back of a van than from the back of a bike........

So since 2 negatives make a positive, does that mean you just gave him a brownie point? Along with brownie points is the requirement that you supply brownies ala-mode. -

I think I have the second starter clutch that Dano did. Money well spent. -
Won't crank...see symptoms below
Flyinfool replied to jasonm.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
A bad ground would not cause the starter to draw "massive" amps. It would have the opposite effect. While you are removing the starter, and have things apart, get a wrench on the end of the crankshaft to be sure that the engine is able to turn over freely. If you are going to replace the starter, make sure you are replacing it with a 4 brush starter. -
FWIW, I am not getting any such messages using Fire Fox on XP Pro, SP 2.

The machine gun sounding solenoid is almost always due to low voltage. This can be from a bad or low battery, or a bad connection anywhere in the system. Another quick and easy test. Use a jumper cable from battery POS, to cable connection on starter motor. This bypasses the solenoid to see if the starter cranks normally. Have a volt meter across the batter during this test. If battery drops below 9V you may have a bad battery. I connect to the starter first and the final connection to the battery just so that I am not under it when it cranks, and so that the arcing does not melt the threads on the starter stud. CAUTION - This also bypasses ALL safeties on the bike, It will turn over in gear, clutch engaged, whatever. This is best done on the center stand so that the back wheel is off the ground for safety. -
A stock venture will be well into valve float before it gets to 10K. Are you sure it was a rev limiter that you hit and not just valve float?

I finally did it.

Depending on how bad it is dented, the dent wizard type places can work magic for a lot less than a body shop. -
Pillon must have been in heat.........

Glad the system worked the way it was supposed to work.
