  1. Valve float has a lot to do with the health of your 31 year old valve springs, and how freely your valves are moving in the guides. There are a few people on here that have been able to get much higher RPM numbers than others. You will have to experiment to find the limits of your engine. Those limits may also change with temperature. You do not want to floating the valves on a regular basis, they just will not live long and will do real bad things if the valve drops.
  2. You may want to check this out too http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?1067-A-list-of-known-problems-on-the-Second-Gen-Venture
  3. Whats a little cool weather.......
  4. Depending on if it has service records to indicate any of this has been done. It is due for a valve clearance check. I would plan to change the brake and clutch fluids. Check the date code on the tires and plan to replace if they are more than 7 years old regardless of remaining tread. The rear end is due for fluid change and a grease job. Check the brake pads especially the rear, the rear does not wear even and one of them wears out a lot faster than the other. You can swap inside to outside to get max life out of the pads. These are the obvious ones I can think of right off the bat in addition to what you mentioned and just general condition stuff.
  5. Can you post a pic with the door open so we can see what connector is in there?
  6. A lot of people are going back to over the air antennas. I used to do installs for a few local stores. Maybe time to get back to that.
  7. It is common to have 2nd gen ignition switch issues. That is why the plug in relay system was developed in the first place. It should be pretty easy to isolate the source of the 1V drop. Eventually that 1V will become more until stuff stops working correctly.
  8. The farther south you are the less likely you are to loose signal during storms. The satellite is located over the equator and approximately lined up with the center of lower USA, so farther south is closer to the satellite, AND the angle is steeper so there is a lot less atmosphere for the signal to go thru where it can be interfered with by storms. As far as Direct vs Dish, they will both loose signal at the same time in the same storm. They are both terrible to work with when you have a problem. It is most likely that when you call to cancel Direct, they will match the offer from Dish. I doubt there is much if any difference in picture quality.
  9. I see that this is an option now. Last time I sold on CL the two way email was not an option. This IS better.
  10. I have never seen one wear like that. Unfortunately it is on the engine side. What does the hole for the other end of the shaft in the cover look like? The only thing I can think of that would do that is if someone was "testing" the starter, a lot, with the cover off and that gear was running under load with no support on the other end. Couple questions; Was there a gasket on the side cover? Can you tell if that is actually a crack in the metal between the boss for the gear and the starter? What does the gear and shaft look like? I am thinking that you have 2 separate problems. One being that shaft and gear. The second being a bad starter clutch. If so contact @Dano.
  11. Install is not so bad, it is the maintenance and upkeep that are the killer.
  12. I had a persistent rear tire slow leak. When I bought new tires, I watched the installer completely clean the rim and the tire. apply a sealer to the rim install a new valve stem, put it all back together and the slow leak is still there. I have sprayed soapy water many times but never found the leak. Last summer it simply stopped leaking air on its own. Some leaks just do not want to be found.
  13. It is when you answer that CL communication that they get your email addy. A local buddy of mine was on CL for the first time and was selling a bike, he being older, very trusting and a bit naive of the modern times put his home addy in the add. He had a pile of "cashiers checks overnighted to him, most were for more that the purchase amount with the request that he deposit them, keep $X for his trouble, and then Western Union the excess money to the sender........... Fortunately we got hold of him before he started to send money out. He only asked because he did not know how to handle multiple paid offers on the bike. Had he only got one scam offer, he would have become a victim. I REALLY HATE SCAMMERS, AND CROOKS! There are to many that have scored or nearly scored with very close family.
  14. I'm betting it ain't me.........
  15. 43 is balmy. Come visit in late January/early Feb. 79 and I am running for the nearest AC. I went down south in March once, The locals were wearing coats and I had shorts and Tee shirt sweating profusely. Bout died of head stroke. I'll take a good old fashion Blizzard over 100 degree heat (dry or humid) any day. :snow2: :snow2: :snow2: :snow2: :snow2: :snow2:
  16. 73 and sunny today, Oh and the record hi for today is 73. Tomorrow is supposed to be 73 and sunny again. I ain't done ridin just yet. by Saturday .............
  17. Yup, every year around this time we kick out all the wimps. At least we split them between Arizona and Florida.
  18. I have surprisingly had good luck putting an anti scam note in my CL adds right with my contact info which is done to be human readable.
  19. It is hard for even me to think about when it is sunny and 72° here, AND I just finally got the bike out of winter storage last month.
  20. We miss you to Tom. But as you eluded to, soon the raking leaves will be done since you can not rake them once they are buried under a nice clean white blanket....... Don't be such a stranger around here, we we were beginning to worry.
  21. When I had my RV it was for use at an annual event. The event was 320 miles from home and all the fun happened after dark so an off site room was not an option. It only took one week of temps in the 100s and nights in the 90s all with high humidity. I never used the RV for anything other than that 1 week per year. But the AC and sitting at the table eating icecream while watching the tenters in the 100+ heat was worth the expense. My next RV will be smaller, and be a toy hauler. The point is that everyone's needs wants and desires are different. It will take some trips with some RVs to determine what is best for you and your situation.
  22. Well there is no shortage of those walking a razor thin line around here.
  23. @cowpuc, a streaming video feed would be wonderful. Just think If I could make fine tuning adjustments in real time to maximize output...........
  24. Oh sure, now you post a private vid to keep me in the dark?
  25. So @Rick Haywood, Did the trailer deal go thru?
