The only thing I can think of that was not mentioned is, with 78K miles there is a good chance that it is due for a valve clearance check. Look at the valve cover gaskets real close for any indication of oil seepage or age cracking if there is oil seepage (which the dealer may have pressure washed off) or age cracking of the rubber especially the big half moons at the ends, then odds are its been a while since someone was in there. They should be checked every 26K and you are right there. Since you do not know how long the bike has been sitting, I would start off with a good dose of Seafoam in the tank and then run it long enough to be sure it is into the carbs, that way you can be sure the fuel system will be good until the weather and roads improve.

If you were able to get the outboard #3 exhaust out then it means that the cam was in the right position. Check again to be sure that even though the tool is not on the shim, make sure it is not touching the side of the shim as that will also lock the shim down. DO NOT TURN THE CAM WITH AN EMPTY SHIM BUCKET!! It is a real bear to get the lobe out of the bucket once it goes in there, and it goes in with no effort at all. Yes sometimes getting them to pop is tricky. As mentioned less pressure is more and a sharper thinner point may help to catch the edge.

Give all those terminals a good cleaning and a good coat of dielectric grease to help keep them clean.

I actually made it into the basement and saw the machines over the weekend. It will be a while yet before I can lift a vice or chuck into place.

Sounds like you at least now have a doc that is willing to help. Not to pry but have you discussed the injectable treatments for Dupuytrens. There are several drugs that are supposed to dissolve the buildup without the need for surgery. Sometimes when you go to see a surgeon for help, surgery is their first and only choice. It is very possible that the drugs are not appropriate in your specific case, even the drug websites are very specific about the types of conditions that can be treated with the drug. But it sure don't cost nuttin to ask. Either way I sure hope that they can get you fixed up for riding by the time @saddlebum closes the back door and all the white fluffy stuff goes away. Our prayers are out for you. You might have to come over here for a visit, it seems there is something in the food or water, maybe even in the air that seems to promote healing. Hows this for an added incentive for quick healing, Do you really want to ride to MD on the BACK seat of Tweeks with Tippy driving..............?

Not only will I never admit to being NORMAL, But I don't think that anyone has ever even accused me of being NORMAL. I sure hope that all of these docs never find a way to make me NORMAL, what fun would that be....................

Woo Hoo I am now wearing a PAIR of shoes that actually match each other. I am not using the crutches at all, and only using the cane for long distance walks. Long distance is anything over a third of a mile for now. The ankle still will not hold my full weight up on my toes but I am getting closer. A actually walked up and down a flight of stairs in a semi normal fashion over the weekend. I think that by the end of this week I might be able to tackle the stairs at work, It is about 50 stairs from the street level to my office. Got to set small achievable goals to make it to the finish line.

TCI repair SUCCESS, sort of..
Flyinfool replied to Droneh8tr's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Trader The wire to the tach is in the harness, there is nothing special about the #2 coil. I have never done any research into the circuits inside of the TCI as to what components do what. But it would be a good guess that the big transistors on the heat sinks are the ones switching the coils on and off. As mentioned earlier, swap the # 2 coil with another one to see if the issue stays with the coil or with the cylinder. -
Happy Valentines day to all.

This would be a good excuse to get an inspection camera from Harbor freight. My guess is that since the valve cover was pulled away from the the cam chain that the plug would not have gone down the cam chain hole. Good excuse to go toy shopping at HF. http://www.harborfreight.com/digital-inspection-camera-62359.html http://www.harborfreight.com/high-resolution-digital-inspection-camera-with-recorder-61838.html

Are you after the 3D cad files or the drawings? I see this is another thread I will need to go thru to see if I can replace some of the missing pics. -
It is a dog eat dog world out there. Don't forget to stop in Milwaukee on the way to AZ for a eating tour of the hot dog specialty houses.

So sad to hear. Even though I never had the pleasure of meeting Jonesy in person, I/we still feel the loss.

Looks good. I hope to see it in action in June at Orlins MD.

I am shooting for late April early May to get back on the scoot. I can not get it out until my right foot is strong enough to get it up on the center stand so that I can change the front wheel bearings. It is surprising just how hard it is to get it up on the center stand with no ligaments attached in the ankle. Maybe when I do my March M&E I can get someone to help me get the bike up on the center stand so I can start my winter maintainance. But walking thru snow is great exercise for both strength and balance..................... I might have to upgrade the flux capacitor.

Well this has been the week of the Docs. Tuesday I went in for my quarterly checkup with the cardiologist. He cheated! Hit me with an unexpected pop quiz that I did not have time to study for. I thought this would be the normal run a ECG talk for 5 minutes and wright a big check. That is my normal visit. But NOOOooo.... not this time, he sprung a stress test on me. I did not study for any tests. At least this was more of stress quiz than a stress test. Ever try running on a treadmill on crutches.................... So they had to do the drug version and there was no fancy xrays and stuff. They just used drugs to run my heart up to only 176 (they hit 198 on the last test). The doc said that my heart is showing reduced capacity from the first test, but I should not worry because my reduced capacity is still better than most people with a "healthy" heart. I started out this whole ordeal with a heart that was way more than normal capacity so I can afford to loose some with no issues. As a result of all of this he cut another one of my meds dosage in half and went from quarterly checks to 6 month checks. So I guess this is all good stuff. Speaking of crutches....... Today I went to PT first thing in the morning. the therapist was in disbelief as to how fast I am progressing. After just 3 weekly visits my range of motion is very close to normal. My strength is at about 50% now, 2 weeks ago my strength was at 10%. I am already doing exercises that are for much farther down the road, and doing them with zero pain. The docs orders were to do as much as I can but to NOT push thru any pain, stop before it hurts. To me that means that anything that does not hurt is OK to do. Doc agreed. Right after the PT session I had an follow up appointment with the foot doc. She looked at the PT reports and did some of her own strength and range of motion tests and said that if someone had told her that a person "MY AGE" could heal that fast she would not have believed them. I still heal like a 12 year old. So as of today the boot is history. What was originally supposed to be 12 weeks in the boot has ended at just under 7 weeks. I am a full 5 weeks ahead of schedule already. The PT therapist has been looking forward to me loosing the boot so she can see me twice a week instead of just once and then she can really start to abuse me. For now I am using the crutches again for walking, but they are more for balance and safety than for support, In the last 7 weeks the muscles in my foot have completely forgotten how to balance and hold me up. by the weekend I should be done with the crutches and down to the cane and by mid next week I plan to be done with walking aids altogether. Then starts the long road of learning how to drive this newly rebuilt foot. It actually felt weird, but at the same time wonderful, to use my right foot to press the gas peddle in my truck today. Mt instincts are still off cuz when I had to make a quick stop my left foot went for the brake peddle with no time to think about it. So this has been my last 2 days............

Depends on if you move the needle in or out. You can adjust either way. -
Gas Mileage Question
Flyinfool replied to Chaharly's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes I have, bout 3 or 4 years ago. -
This should be posted in First and Second Gen Tech talk.

I think it is much easier and faster to do it the correct way. You do not need to gring off the end of the slider. He has the Diaphragms fro Sirius which are a direct replacement for the originals. All you need to do is to pull the old one out of the space between the washers. Stretch the new one into place and then using either a credit card or @skydoc_17s special thumb nail press the new diaphragm back into the groove and you are done and do not risk a glue joint failing on the road. -
Good thing for you, or good thing for Florida's future tourism????

Gas Mileage Question
Flyinfool replied to Chaharly's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 88 with good diaphragms gets 38-40 mpg with my style of driving. Changing the diaphragms will make the bike run better and get better throttle response which the fun factor will reduce mileage but then the engine running better will get you better mileage. How these two mix is kind of up to you. I would change the diaphragms before doing any kind of tuning or adjustments. Just a few tiny pin holes does make a big difference. -
