Tuning the progressive springs.
Flyinfool replied to Flyinfool's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well better late than never. Today I finally got around to adjusting the preload. I measured the spacers as is at 1.094 long. So I cut one in half with an 093 cutter I ended up wit new spacers at exactly .500 long. I put these in and went for a ride. The first thing I noticed was that the windshield now clears the door of the shed by about a quarter inch. It was rubbing before. The slow speed handling is much improved, but not quite what I am after. I did not get a chance to hit any curves at more than 30 MPH so I will have to wait till tomorrows trip into work to try out handling at higher speeds. I will likely leave it like this for a month just to get used to it and see if I want to take the spacers out all together. I really never thought that a half inch would make this much of a difference in handling. -
It is a common issue with the 2nd gens to get a plugged vent line causing fuel starvation. The woosh when you opened the cap is the big giveaway. It is known for various insects to crawl up in the vent hose and plug it up. If you do not clear the vent hose it WILL happen again, and again......................

That aint as silly as it sounds. I put a big powerful magnet on the bottom of my bike to trip a traffic signal that I go thru often. I have found many nails and screws and other steel junk stuck to that magnet over the years. I figure everyone of them was headed for the rear wheel. My theory as to why the rear is that one that seems to collect the nails and not the front is; The nail is laying on its side on the road, it is not pointed in a direction to puncture anything. the front tire rolls over it and causes it to start bouncing down the road and the rear gets there just as the nail is point up and POOF. My magnet will not pick a nail off the ground, but it will snag one that is about 2 inches off the ground. Maybe I need a bigger magnet...................

Electronics charging question
Flyinfool replied to Mad Dog's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Another angle to look at. Check your bikes voltage across the battery with everything turned on that is normally turned on for a ride to be sure that the bike charging system is up to snuff. It could be possible to loose one diode in the rectifier and that could cause the excess AC ripple on the line. This could manifest as a slightly low charging voltage under load. Another trick is to set your meter for AC volts and check across the battery with the bike turned off The meter should say zero. If the meter reads zero then you can do the next test. Some meters will read the voltage wether it is AC or DC, some wont. Now start the bike If there is AC coming thru the meter will see it. -

Cable upgrade
Flyinfool replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Part of what you want is for the cables to be welding cable. Welding cable is made up to be much more flexible and is much easier to snake thru the bike. A welding supply shop may be able to make them up for you also. A local marine supply store also makes up cables. -
I guess it ain't all that hard to do that one extra click. I am sure that even us old farts can muddle our way thru this one. Thanks Don for all that you do to keep all of us ungrateful pot stirrers and even some pot lickers happy. I know it is a thankless job.

Do you also need to be a supporting member to receive a PM with a pic?

I just sent you a PM with a pic................\

Well at least we have had 2 quiet nights in a row. But then they are strictly enforcing the curfews to not let anything even get started.

After reading up a bit, the 4K GoPro can use your phone via bluetooth or WiFi as the monitor, you can even control all functions of the camera from your phone. I have to vote for the 4K.
-
That is a toss up. I love my 4K tvs picture quality. having a display on the camera makes it so much more convenient to use, and/or preview a vid. 4K will eat gigabits a lot faster than 1080p. How much shoot time can each one give? File sizes will be massive, will this make a difference to you for uploading or transferring the files?

Cable upgrade
Flyinfool replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
:sign yeah that: There were several different people over the years that were making up the cables. But none of them are still members here. -
If you want to send pics to someone privately you need to exchange email addresses and then send the pics via email. The email function of the forum does not allow you to attach pics either.

I think he meant CTFW, Chase The Front Wheel. I typically ride till mid November, I stop riding when Deer hunting opens and then there is usually SNOW on the ground by the time I get home from deer hunting. I do not have heated anything. Just a warm coat and good gloves. I have ridden more than once dressed in full blaze orange from my chin to my ankles.

Whining sound
Flyinfool replied to Old Buck's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Is your old pump impeller plastic? There IS a new metal one that is what you want to put in there. I think you are missing a digit in the part number you posted. -
I love the concept of public caning that they use in Singapore. I read that they have to lowest rate of repeat offenders in the world. We need to bring back good old fashion butt whooping.

It has been all over the national news about the riots in Milwaukee. The national news sure is good at misinformation. National news said the National Guard was called in. The National Guard was put on alert and is ready but never deployed, YET. I just do not understand the logic that makes people do things like this. This is all happening about 10 miles from me so it is very unlikely that it will get near me. It is also the only thing the local news seems to be able to talk about. The first night there were 17 arrests after they burned 6 businesses to the ground, and burned a squad car and flipped over some privately owned cars. It came out that the 17 that were arrested wire all from Milwaukee but not from that area, they responded to the calls on social media to come and riot and loot. Last night two homes were burned, one had a family of 6 living in it, all made it out without injury. So if I get this correctly, these people feel that if a convicted felon points a gun at police and ends up dying on the spot, that means it is time to get a new free TV and make a bonfire out of the store.................?????

Welcome from down in the corner of Wisconsin. I will be passing thru New Lisbon Labor day weekend, going from Milwaukee to Ladysmith. There is a thread in the tech section of what to look for as common issues with a 2nd gen. 25K miles is getting close to taking a peek at the valve adjustment, it is not hard to do, just very time consuming because you have to take a lot of stuff off to get to them.

I have never fired 3 rounds at a deer from any gun. 2 rounds on rare occasion. It is about as fast to reload as my New England Firearms single shot shotgun that I take upland bird hunting. Having a single shot makes you pick your shot better and learn to make the first one count. Just for giggles I did use it once at a bowling pin shoot, I took down 5 pins in 30 seconds, with 6 shots. I had a soft pin and the bullet went thru the pin and did not knock it off the table, second shot square into the base of the pin, got 90% of the pin off the table. For comparison with one of my guns that is built for speed I can take 5 pins in 2.5 seconds and that is bumping up against the speed of the guns action.

A TIG welder is on my toy list as well, (Miller Diversion 180) I do have a decent 200A MIG and a torch set. I sold my stick welder a week after the first time I tried the MIG. It is scary to think that you sound an awful lot like me with tool acquisitions and then learn to use them later. You are my kind of people. Next thing you know there will be another SNOW machine located in New York. Won't that make @cowpuc happy.

Well if you like different. Is it a rifle or a hand gun? It has a 14 inch barrel and chambered in 7mm-08. I bought this for back when the hunting regs called for shotguns or hand guns only. This will easily drop a deer at 200 + yards. This one is even for sale..........

Wonder if it got as bad as the local arena with indoor go cart and midget racing on a track about the size of a hockey rink. Nitro and Alky fumes in a confined place.................. sure smelled good. real clad I was on the upwind side and near the open doors............... They only tried that once. I bet it took a while to get the rubber off the floor............
