I put an inline fused link,40 amp in place.A minifuse type. Its a little larger than mini. Now the headlight and tailights work, the dash lights work, the horn and when I hit the button it turns over.I am on the road to ressurect. The guy i got it from said he thought the tci was bad.It was getting gas and turning over but never starting. next i am going to change the oil. What is the red flashing light that comes on when the key is on.Is that a low oil light? I need to check the radiator, it might be dry.I read the radiator holds 2.8 quarts. How much antifreeze and how much water. Is tap water ok? It is in a car. The fused link that I reconstructed is really just a loop that makes a circle from the post back to the main red wire.it does not seem necessary but when the glass fuse blew before nothing worked. I figured one red wire from the positive battery post, then it to the main fuse, then to the regulator and onward to the ignition switch.I know now the ignition circuit and starter circuits work.I need spark.I wil take one plug out still connected to its respective sparkplug wire.Hit the button wheil the plug is touching the cylinder head and see if any spark occurs. The tank I am sure is messed up and the carbs after sitting.I dont hear or smell gas though. But it could have evaporated. on the red loop wire thing i made- the connector had an eye loop on its end.I just have the redwire stripped and bent around the loop.It gets hot, very warm to touch. The fuse didnt blow.Maybe i need to do it right and make a solid connection between the 2 ends. At least now i know some things do work. I will put photos on here soon.

I found the problem. The fuseable link in the red wire from the battery has a metal fuse strip inside.not surrounded by glass.Just the metal. It blew. I was going to do the solenoid jump but now i dont need to.I have never seen a link coming right from the positive battery post before.I am glad it blew.I will try to fix it tomorrow.I will post back here. Thanks for everyone's help.

I figured it out.the large red wire from the battery has a fuseable link close to the battery. It blew. Its not like any link I have seen. the piece that conducts the power is a steel looking rectangle, like the ones inside a glass fuse.It might have been a large glass fuse originally. It is hooked directly on either end with a phillips screw. The link is a white connector.the metal strip is anchored one end on the female side and one end on the male side.I suppose buy a link at autozone with a 15 amp fuse and put it in its place.

I appreciate the input.I was going to follow the advices but now I cant.I put a hot battery in there I know for sure will power up the 86 because it powers up the dash and makes the 83 parts bike turn over.On the 86 when the key is in the ignition and turned to on nothing happens. No dash lights, neutral light, nothing. The previous owner had a relative try helping him out. That person put a replacement fuse box in.I am thinking that may not be installed correctly, or some wire somewhere,is not connected or has a very weak or nonexistent ground connection.I need to get something working before i can try anything else.I would guess 1. some major connection is bad,2.the ignition switch has somehow been left out, but all the stock wiring going to the replacement fuse box looks like it has never been touched. I did install the test battery backwards at first.I assumed that was the problem. When I did that I heard a sound that was like when a blows. All the fuses look intact.I probably will replace them all just to see. That is cheap and easy. I sincerely hope that sound was a fuse blowing because that would have protected the rest of the circuit. The solenoid appears to be right up next to the battery on the left side.I cant even cross it with a screwdriver to make the engine turn over because nothing else works. Please tell me what obvious things to look for.It is like the bike does not even have a battery in it.I thought about taking a small piece of red and a piece of black to the poles of the solenoid then crossing it.That would make it turn over if it is turnable. The bike looks like it was someone's pride and joy, it is all intact and had a nice cover over it.

I just got an 86 yesterday. It looks great but isnt running.I cant even test it with a key.The relative of the former owner put a new fuse box in it.It looks great, but i havent had time to check it out for proper wires in the proper place. But on my 83 parts bike with the stock fuse box the wires seem to be in the right place.I have a very small hot battery that is capable of powering up everything i own, at least enough for testing function or not function.I put that battery in, turned the key, nothing.I looked at the main fuse, it didnt blow.I did hook up the test battery backwards initially. The red cable I assumed to be positive.its on the right side as you sit on the bike.I found that to be negative on my parts 83.I moved the battery, reconnected the proper posts and still nothing. My theories are since no fuse blew from connecting wrong the first time is either the ignition switch isnt even connected, or its connected wrong, or 2. some wire, ground or positive or both have come loose. On a glass fuse its easy to see if one blows. These are the more modern fuses, that come in colors, have a brasslooking wire that bridges from one side of the fuse to the other.I put the battery in the old bike and yes its lights come on, the motor turns over.I dont have a multimeter, but do have one of those testers that looks like an icepick to test for either hot wire or not a hotwire.Sorry i dont know electrical jargon.

I have seen some posts here, and I am going to find them and read them all.I bought a nicelooking 86 yesterday not running. The guy I bought it from said it was his uncle's bike and his uncle had died recently. The bike looked very well cared for except for some rust around a couple engine covers. The seller said his uncle had told him the bike ran and then quit, like it wasnt getting any gas.So, could be the fuel pump or the fuel filter or both.I have just barely got it off trailer.I will check the filter first, most likely its clogged up.I bought one filter for a 99 I used to have.Only $7.00. Online I see only HIGH FLOW fuel filters for 83-92 ventures, and ridiculous priced at $35.00.It looks as though any inline fuel filter with some sizeable overall dimension would work.Maybe even automotive.I read the pumps seldom go out and there is no option to dissassemble and clean contact points as on the second gene bikes.Which place do members here prefer for parts? All input appreciated.

cooling fins, weather riding

super awesome link. You exchange your core and he sends you the replacements it appears.$400 for fins and dog bones. What are dog bones, are they part of the necessary parts to do the mods? I really like the color combo in the web picture too.I want to do mine like that. -

I dont intend removing them, and I for sure have no clue what the holes could be plugged with.I just always want to customize everything.I need to leave things alone. These ventures dont lend themselves to customizing.Mine looks good asis, just never liked the 2 tone silver. But that is a whole different topic. -

It was 73 today.Going to be 720-87 next few days.Great riding weather.I also have some electric stuff to try out.How often do you drain antifreeze and what type do you use? Also I read where a guy customized his second gen and the cooling fins are removeable.I would think some sort of bolt holes would be left.I like the fake fins look myself. -
i figured it out.bike is in classifieds now.but crooked

no need to change both cams.Only the vmax intake cam is different.personally the stock hp of my venture is absolutely perfect.I can be at 80 at a blink of an eye, cruise at that speed all day long.I live in the metroplex.I speed up to pass cars and before i realize I am at 90.More horsepower would be unnecessary and wasted. The ugly beemer bagger claims to have 160 hp.80 is plenty in my opinion.

https://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/mcy/d/99-yamaha-venture-wttwts/6341086586.html One test back in 99 showed the venture tested at 98 crank and 79 rear wheel.probably right.

wow.For $36,000 you can get an Indian with 111 cu inches and get a whopping 72 hp.Or you can buy my 99 venture for $3,000 and get 98 hp.Decisions, decisions.

I agree.Perfect for me.18 more hp than the 950.Just enough power.None here for 2500.At least 3500.
