Oil Filter for an '83

the bike with the potential second gear issue is a total unknown.it doesnt run yet.So I cant ride it to see about second gear. But i have an 86 that does run and an 82 xj650 I have taken apart down to the crank i will get back together.I had to replace the head, cams, carb manifolds and of course all the gaskets.I can do mechanic work, my expoerience before was with car motors.Way different.one car, 1 cam,not overhead, no transmission inside the motor and so forth. I was on a suzuki site for 15 years.Everyone there does their own mechanic stuff.one guys signature i agree with."how hard can it be?". -

You wrote you were a mechanic on bikes for 40 years. That is what makes the job seem simple to you possibly. -

there is no shop here that would do it.Bikes over 10 years olf no dealer will touch.I know of no one that works on old bikes here and we are talking an area with 7 million people.I could manage the repair part of it.But getting it all apart and back together without screwing it up is not likely.I dont even know if the problem is there yet. When i get it running I will then decide what to do. There are a zillion things to unhook.Thats why my definitely parts only 83 comes in handy.I cant hurt it, but a good way to practice. -

so where in that picture is the split ring. The press makes it pop off? Or do you have to press certain parts off the crank to get it off then repress those parts back on.My friend has a real press. He would help me do it.And if its bad it probably looks it.You have the part number or place to order one from? And arent there about 900 bolts holding the case together, different lengths? Did you use yamabond and a gasket rejoining them or just the gasket. Its a paper gasket i assume. -
of course there are some broken pieces on the 3 sets of fairings i have. Some pieces are intact. But I ordered the basic kit from plastex. If have not heard of them i suggest you log on and watch the how to video.it makes permanent fixes that surpass anything i have seen.better than plastic welding or buying a lot of overpriced parts on ebay.I will post before and after as I go.The right side upper fairing is fixable.I pretty much demolished the left side so i wont use the product there. But those dreaded broken mounting tabs, like the ones on the false tank filler door, it has a way to recreate those.

The one I hope to get running has 34,000 miles on it.But all 83s had second gear failure at some point.I want to get it running and rideable. Then I will find out about second gear.Taking a 300 pound motor apart and replacing the part that wore out and let it jump out of gear is not for the faint of heart.I plan on taking the motor out of the parts bike.I have an engine stand.try taking it apart and see how difficult a task it is.All I need is 30 hours in a day so I can add that to my list. -

interesting. The first mad max they used 10 kz 1000s making the movie. The venture engine is complicated.I would hate to do something to it internally. But they last well over 100,000 miles with routine maintaiance. The 83s and such are very old but its not unusual to find one with low mileage. My 2 83s have 30,000 on them. But as decades go by things deteriorate. To get 98 horsepower of a stock harley, well it isnt possible now that the vrod is gone. And it would cost 30-40,000 special order if one could even be created.I have $200 in my 86.I can do a whole lot before i reach harley status. My 2 83s I paid a total of 200 for them both. One is strictly parts, the other i was going to do something like yours.Low budget but high quality.Impossible with most other bikes. -

the 83 turns over pretty good, its been over a year since it was running. The previous owner put a used tci on it and said it started and ran for a few minutes then quit.I am not going to build anything till i get it running.my plan once that is done will be to take the bike to indianapolis for the annual mad max rally. So far I havent seen them post for 2018.I hope they still have it.My daughter lives in that area. Basic black, dragstyle handlebars.spiked handgrips and pegs.huge sissybar in back with maybe a doll head like in the movie. Kind of a cross between rat bike and thunderdome. But a daily rider possibility, not just for show.I might have a friend fabricate spikes coming from the axles, opponent shredder sort of. If i was wealthy I would build a custom. Why an old venture as the starting point? because I have one already and the motors are quick once the bike is stripped down. I have a genius friend fabricator. He could make girder forks from scratch. Just an idea. And a dakota digital dash.ducati type fairing. No rearset crap.700 pound cafe racer? Stupid idea.I see people taking all kinds of bikes and calling them cafe racers.I lived in the days when cafe racers began. All were light and flickable, not a stripped down goldwing. I have no way of making bodywork. Full wheel discs might also add to the futuristic look.sequential turn signals.I have seen some from various companies that adhere to the lower triple trees.brembo brakes, either goldvalve emulators or ohlin shocks.Remove everything that adds weight and keep the center of gravity low for sure. -
if i take the starter off because new cables dont do the trick I will buy a 4 brush.probably $150 but some things are not optional. When I had my first venture about10 years ago I needed a new thermostat. The dealer said ok,$70. I said wow, thats high. His reply was be glad it isnt a goldwing, it would be twice that.So I went to napa.I got a girl salesperson.I thought oh no.I asked her if she knew of any car thermostat that might match it.In 5 minutes she came back with a perfect match for some kind of nissan.$2.50.

I am not one that believes in throwing money at a problem and hope to hit it. I will spend a lot more time to be as sure as possible of what the real problem is, and then have to spend and fix just one time. Jeff Borowski . . 88 Venture standard I agree also. The basic approach has been given in all the advice. I really dont intend buying another starter except as a last resort.i am sure without even looking my cables could stand replacing, or at least at a minimum cleaning and securing their attachments.Taking the starter off to clean the inside is not something i want to do.If i remove the starter I am going to replace it.Putting in new brushes, creating an additional ground is doable, but the bike has 84,000 miles.I prefer that over one that has 10,000 in 32 years.if its the original starter it is deservedly worn out.No way to tell unless some sticker has a manufacture date on it.When I owned my first venture it was an 83.Another wellknown venture site usually went to worst case scenario and would have me doing major dismantling and parts replacement as advice. I did not follow their advice but that was the only place to ask at the time.

My original and now eventual goal will be getting my 83 running.I have another 83 parts bike for and endless supply. But I found a really nice looking 86 all intact a day later.I have a thread here about a fuse panel or other problem in regard to it.It has 84,000 miles on it and the body work was in great shape till I dropped it.I am going to have to replace some fairing pieces now.I really wanted to get it going. The deceased owners relatives had installed a fuse box with minifuses.I blew the main fuse by doing something stupid.I replaced the blown glass fuse with an inline mini 40 amp fuse. All the lights worked, dash, head, tail, horn, start button. It cranked real slow.I bought a brand new battery and its fully charged.I put it in the bike and it cranked real slow. For grins I put it in the 83 and it turned over way faster. That 83 just wont start for some reason.I put it back in the 86.Hooked my truck battery to it.Just the battery. No truck was running. It still cranked slowly but all the sudden it started. It had sat apparently since 2013.Maybe it was running more recently,no one knows for sure. The tag says 2013. Lots of smoking, running rough, on full choke. After several minutes I tried turning the choke off.It would definitely try to die.I know I have to do the dreaded carb clean.Plus the tank seemed empty when i started messing with the bike so i put about 1 1/2 gallons of new gas in it.Plus I changed the oil.I didnt have a new filter. But it is a spin on.I bought an expensive spinon k and n and put it on.The clutch master cylinder I know has to be dry.Of course some fool stripped out the head of one of the screws. I dread trying to get that out. So, I know it runs, but even hooked to my truck battery it cranks slow till it starts.I can unhook the jumper cables and it keeps running.Without the truck help it just cranks too slow.I suspect I will need to replace the starter. The one off the 83 should work, right? I have to read up in the manual how to remove it. Here is the bigger problem.now none of my dash lights work,no headlight, neutral light, nothing. However the ignition and start circuits are ok or it wouldnt start and run.I assume one of the fuses in the new panel blew. Not sure why.But I know it runs now.Advice on all these issues will be greatly appreciated. The start button works, the horn doesnt now. One last question, does it make any difference if you kill the motor with the key or the killswitch? I have heard arguments both ways. Thanks for your help.

I am trying to resurrect an 86 fulldress. But I have an 83 that the previous owner removed all the plastic.Much of it was banged up anyway.I plan on doing something similar to yours, only stock front end.You have pods sticking up from your carbs. That must make a tuning nightmare. What did you do with all the wiring, battery box and tci under the false tank cover. And is that overflow tank ziptied to the frame tube? I was wondering what to do with it.interesting. -
Thanks for straightening the pictures. I could hardly believe it when I pulled the bike cover off it at the guys house and saw how good it looked. It hasnt been started for over a year, maybe longer. But the front tire looks to have less than 100 miles on it.The little rubber molding hairs are still on it.The seat cover looks good, overall it looks good.I have a lot of things to do as always in regard to fluids oil change etc.A new battery soon.I dont want to waste $100 on a battery till I know more about the engine. The seller had a relative and it was the relatives uncle who took good care of it.The uncle suddenly died. They just wanted it gone.$200. I feel quite lucky. The seller had some more bike stuff in his back yard, pieces of this and that. His garage was crammed full of harleys, and an awesome 1943 bmw with a sidecar in army green original. I have never been lucky before. Its a good feeling. The downer is i dropped it getting it into the trailer and broke the side faring on the left side of a perfectly preserved set of plastics.I have 2 sets of spares, not the black and gold.So I went to the auto paint store and bought the black and gold.I learned the hard way that yamaha international does not know how to send the right color, even with the bike serial number when I was touching up a 99 rsv.But this store uses a computer, scans a piece of a bike with the desired color on it, this time i gave them the false tank cover, and they matched it perfectly.$64.00. I dont know when I will get it all sorted out, but its like Christmas morning for a 5 year old everytime i go in the garage and tinker with it.

radioshack does not exist here. They went bankrupt.I have to think a minute where a place would be that has items like that. It does look simple, but my fuse box was replaced with a minifuse type by the former owner. There is a slot left unused in the middle.I guess pop a fuse in there and run the wire to it.However, the glassfuse type would easily be moved out of the way, put the bypass wirein, then snap the fuse back in.I am not sure if a minifuse prong would allow a piece of wire under it and be pushed back into the holder.I do understand what needs to be done though.I was told if there was no resistor put in this circuit the computer could be ruined.

Thanks for the information.I am not sure what a resistor is or where it would be located, but sticking into a battery is not the power source I assume.Where the probe starts from in the wiring is the place to disconnect if possible I guess. Then the light might never go out. That whole probe thing makes no sense.
-
great information. On the battery probe-why in the world, I have never seen that before. The replacement battery I assume will have a hole to plug it in to.The little battery i am using is from a old cb650 I dont have anymore. If there is no need for the probe I will find where its connected downline and remove it. I have 2 83 parts bikes so anything I need pretty much is right next to this bike.It is the beautiful black and gold of that year. The previous guy had removed much of the radio innards.I plan on discarding all that.Extra weight and i wont use it anyway. As long as I just disconnect connectors, that should not create an open circuit that interferes with anything else, right? Just the circuit to the sound system itself will be open which should not cause a problem. I have not checked the tire wear dates, but the front tire is brand new.I read once as long as there is no sidewall checking and the tires arent over 6 years old, they are safe to use.

My pictures came out too dark. The voltage gauge on the right the needle is setting at the bottom. That probably doesnt move unless the engine is running. In the center of the dash the flashing light is there but stopped flashing.what is visible is an oil can, a bike that looks leaned over, a picture of a battery, and what appears to be a picture of the gas level in the motorcycle.
