  1. According to the recent news reports most of the stations where already selling it but in the past if it stated 10 % alcohol I avoided it. On a trip north in my Trans Am I had to fill up in Iowa with it and only got 23 MPG instead of my normal 25.
  2. My RSV runs about what everybody elses does. When I had a HD Sportster it was right on the money. The Japanese could make these dead on if they wanted to. They want their bikes to look faster and more powerful than they really are. It also looks like they get better gas mileage. I have ridden with somebody on an Electra Glide quite a bit. We would both fill up and reset our odometers. I would always show more miles than him. A while back Yamaha had to admit that one of their sport bikes didn't put out the horsepower they claimed.
  3. I ordered the Polk db400s from Crutchfield last Sunday. Got them Wednesday. Put them in today. I didn't have to open the mounting holes any. It was raining here so I didn't get to try them out.
  4. I forgot about the hand warmers and body warmers that hunters use. They work pretty good. I was using them before I got the electric gear. They are what convinced me that keeping your core warm warms the rest of you too. I would put one in my t shirt pocket and three hours later it would still be warm.
  5. I put a pair of 55 watt somethings? (halagen) from Walmart on my Sportster before I sold it. They worked great and only cost about 12.00
  6. 350 miles in 26 degree weather is pretty hard core.
  7. I use an electric vest. As long as your core is warm your extremities stay warmer than what they would otherwise. I also have the gloves for when it gets real bad but a friend has only the gloves and he complains about his hands still being cold. I have Widder and have been happy with them.About 35 is as cold as I ride in the dark because of worrying about frost on the highway.
  8. I bought a couple of cables off ebay that had 5pin din ends and a couple that had 5 pin mini din,cut the up and reattached them to to each other. Hopefully I have attached a drawing of which pins need to go together.
  9. I rode mine to Colorado the first summer I had it. 2500 miles in 5 days. After that I felt like it was a smaller bike. At slow speeds there is something called the friction zone. You slip the clutch and keep the RPMs at about 1100. It gives the bike stability you wouldn't usually have at that slow speed. The internal parts spinning are similar to the tires spinning. There is a printed article by a police trainer named Neil Harris that is very good. You have to request it from him and he asks that people not transfer it electronically. motorlessons@richochet.com
  10. I haven't had much luck with the J&M junk. I don't know how they got the reputation they have. The only time I use mine is when my wife rides with me which isn't really that often. I think they probably developed problems the second ride we went on. I bought replacement upper cords which didn't hold up. Now I have made my own which I haven't had a chance to use because the weather turned cold and my wife doesn't ride in the cold. I have dissected the old cords and found that the solder joints have separated where the wires join with the pins. 3/2/08 We went for a ride today using my homemade patch cords. I think thats the first ride we didn't have problems with the communications. Worked better than the J&Ms new.
  11. I also had a lot of metal shavings at the first final drive oil change so I changed it more often than the schedule. It now has close to 60000 miles on it and seems to be fine.
  12. We live in Eldon Mo. Its close to the Lake of the Ozarks which used to be the largest man made lake in the country. We have hills, rivers and big springs. My favorite part of the state is between here and Arkansas. Some of the best float streams in the nation are south of here. Lots of curvy roads. When you go north it turns into plains.
  13. We have a wine chiller that works from the Peltier effect and it is not very effective.
  14. When I installed my new back tire I measured the tread depth. It was .280 of an inch. I just checked it after 3500 miles and it now measures .215.
  15. I got 5 years out of my stock battery too. I think that is outstanding.
  16. I was wearing a traditional leather motorcycle jacket when I had accident. I bounced and spun several times before I started sliding and thought I was going to make it. I did some studying while I was healing and found Aerostich Roadcrafter. They claim that in their tests synthetic materials start sliding much quicker. They are very expensive but are American made. I have wore the suit at over 90 degrees but decided that in the heat something else was needed. I now have Joe Rocket mesh and Joe Rocket solid jackets and have been very happy with them. I wore the suit this morning with a widder electric vest. The temp was 38 degrees and I was comfortable. 30 mile ride. I also have Joe rocket mesh pants I wear over my shorts in the summer. Before the accident I would sometimes ride in shorts and no helmet. I was lucky it happened in February and I had every bit of gear I had on. I never go out on the Hwy without armor now.
  17. This is a lot like the gun control debate. They claim they only want to bam Supersports to divide the community up. After they ban one they will go after another. We should not let insurance companies decide what we do for recreation.
  18. dealer recommended blow dryer. worked great. no residue.
  19. Around here if you are riding in the dark in October you had better slow down or you and a deer will get tangled up.
  20. What kinds of things that drivers do to really irritate you. I'll start it off with a couple of things that bug me. I'm riding down the 4 lane in the dark and a car passes me and pulls right back into my lane. I can no longer see dead animals and alligators in the road. Why don't they just wait to pull over until they are further ahead as long as they don't have somebody riding their tail. I'm coming up to an intersection in heavy traffic. Car pulls up, stops, and then starts easing forward. Well if he thinks he is going to shoot the gap behind me he probably just lost his chance because I am going to think he's coming out in front of me and slow down. I have to assume he's coming because previous experience says so. Maybe if we can come up with enough of these maybe we can send them in to some magazine and get them published where the car drivers can see them.
  21. 860 miles in 13 hours. Eldon Mo to the west side of Denver Co. 2500 miles over 5 day period starting with that day.
  22. Use a blow dryer to warm it up. Start peeling it back and you will get a feel for how much heat to use. The sticker will come off without leaving any residue to clean.
  23. A while back I posted about a failing Metzeler tire. Wizard said that I was running to low an air pressure. Although I never could access the page he referred to the customer service rep at Metzeler said 49 lbs. the second time I asked. I have recieved a new tire after a battle with them. I am willing to try again at the higher pressure. They need to improve their website. I would have been running at the higher pressure all along if I had known. The local dealer said the tire was defective and then after talking to Parts Unlimited who is the distributer fo the US he changed his tune and was trying to make me buy a new tire and send the old one off for inspection. I already had a Avon on the way so I put it on and and gave the old one to the dealer. We waited for a Parts Unlimited rep to come by and look at it. When he finally did he said it was road hazard and wasn't covered. I took back the evidence and called Metzeler. They said that with road hazard there would be evidence inside the tire. The tire is perfect on the inside and I knew I hadn't hit anything. After I told the Metzeler rep that he finally agreed to order me a new tire. I have come to the conclusion that I personally don't trust Parts Unlimited although it evidently is hard to deal with motorcycle stuff and not deal with them even if your not aware of it. It will probably be next summer before I need to mount the new Metzeler. I will watch it close and I am hoping that eventually I can post that it wore out normally.
  24. I hit a skunk a few years ago. I didn't have much time to react and just naturally went to the head side instead of the other side. A few months ago a dog was on the side of the pavement. I honked the horn and slowed down and moved to the left. The dog just kept on walking and I kept on moving over until I was in the other lane. Then the dog started running and ran right in front of me. I had expected the dog to turn around when I honked but now I am starting to think that their instinct is to continue in the direction that they are already headed. What is everybody elses experience?
  25. I change all my own tires and I usually take off one rotor on the front so I can work without hitting it.
