Reg vs Premium
midnightventure replied to Seaking's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I run regular all the time. I have compared regular and premium and couldn't tell any difference. Currently getting 40 mpg or better. We have a lot of boats and marinas in our area. Some of the marinas are putting out warnings about people that run regular from gas stations. Here in Mo. regular is mandated 10% alcohol. The alcohol draws moisture and when the boats are stored it wreaks havoc on the fuel systems. So if you don't ride consistently then you might want to run premium which here in Mo. is still 100% gas. That could account for some of the difference in mpg for some people since gasohol doesn't contain as much energy. -
Lost Seat Hold Down Nut Replacement - 2nd Gen

Good idea. The dealers especially can't seem to get them tight enough to stay on. -
3 1/2 years ago I tried to adjust my valves. I had done it on several bikes that had screw and locknut adjusters. Trying to go by the book wasn't working out so I put it back together and took it to the Yamaha dealer. When I talked to the mechanic he wasn't interested in helping me figure out what I was doing wrong. Now here it is 3 1/2 years later and I just had it checked by an independent. I told him about my attempt and that it still bothered me. He did it for half the price and explained what he thought wasn't working for me. Like the carb synch in the factoty manual he believes the factory service manual isn't right. He said he had to rotate the engine a little past TDC to obtain good measurements. He rotated it to where the lobes where straight up instead of pointing away from each other. In the position that the book called for the measurements that I was getting 3 1/2 years ago weren't making sense. 3 1/2 years ago (32,000) miles the Yamaha tech changed one shim. Today (65,000 miles) everything was in spec. ????????

I run vest, arm sleeves, and gloves. I have my carb heaters disconnected. They work great.

When my shock failed it had a pool of oil under it that looked like new oil even though my motor oil had quite a few miles on it. Yamaha would not do anything. They tried to make the same claim that people here are making. I stood the bike up and told the service writer to look at the level which was about half way. They admitted that but still wouldn't do anything. It wasn't very long before it would leak all the air out on a 1/2 hour ride. At that point they replaced the shock. It can be ridden without the oil. It was probably a couple of months or more on mine.

Some links to good safety tips. I'm sure most of us have seen most of these before but somebody might find a nugget of useful info. http://www.motorcycledaily.com/10august08_reminder.htm

The grooved highways don't bother me near as much since I switched from the OEM Dunlop tires. Tires with a tread pattern like the Avons do a lot better. I just ordered a Elite 3 to try out.

Last year I had a Metzeler tire start cracking pretty bad. After a 3 week fight with them and threatening to go on every forum in the country and telling about it they finally had Parts Unlimited ( their USA distributer) send me a new tire. I kept it in the original wrapper until about a month ago when the Avon I had replaced the first one with wore out. Now after 2400 miles the brand new Metzeler is starting to crack down at the bottom of the treads. Metzeler has started putting the air pressures on the first page of their website and I had aired it to that recommendation. (45 rear 40 front). This tire and the first tire were both made in Germany. I am going to call and tell them about it but at this point if they offered me 10 new tires I wouldn't take them. My Dr 650 has Metzelers on it but it is so light I'm sure they will be fine.

I have seen DOT stickers for sale somewhere, maybe ebay. Thats kind of like when I first started riding motorcycles weren't required to have signals. If they were there they had to work.

I found out Yamaha boat dealers can sell motorcycle parts. This boats.net had the best price and free shipping that I could find. Already ordered it from them. Thats actually a ski lift I'm camped under. Pretty rough. I saw four bikes on their sides in the first 2 hours I was there. Heard about several others. I think people got used to it and the grass got beat down where we could see the rough stuff better. I did find out I could take the Venture places I never would have tried before.

I just got back from 1700 mile trip to Duluth with a side trip to Chippewa Falls to see my daughter. Everything went pretty good except the first night when I pulled into the campground in Iowa I smelled antifreeze. Got off the bike and looked and one tube had a dent and there was a double spray of antifreeze. Thought my whole trip was ruined. I bought some stopleak and a package of JB Weld waterweld.Put the stopleak in and mixed up a ball of the epoxy and smashed it in around the damaged tube. Very nervously the next morning we headed on north. Never saw a drop of fluid leak or I probably would have turned around and headed back home. I hauled 2 gallons of antifreeze around the rest of the trip just in case. Tonight looking online for a new radiator the cheapest price I found was from a boat dealer. I was searching with the Yamaha # that I found at a motorcycle website. 4XY-12461-00-00 That surely is the same # all the way through the Yamaha system and they don't have a boat radiator with the same #. Maybe it fits a jetski. Can anybody confirm this?

A friend was going to this one and my daughter lives up that way so I decided to go. I just looked at where Pork in the Pines is going to happen and I am hoping to get to that area and look at the start of the Mississippi river.

Is anybody going to the Aerostich VBR rally in Duluth MN in 2 weeks?

I have seen 42 riding slow in a group. If I'm pushing it a lot it drops to 34. It does vary with the carb synchronization. Recently I am averaging 38 on a 30 mile one way daily trip. Its a combination of 4 lane and 2 lane curvy that I know really well so I am going about as fast as on the 4 lane.

I would also give you your money back. Anything with Fluke on it is good stuff.

A ac powersource is constantly changing magnitude and direction. RMS is root mean square. They use a mathematical formula for calculating the average.

I see more BMW riders and crotch rocket riders that don't wave than anything else. Of course a lot of cruiser riders won't wave at the crotch rockets so they are probably surprised when somebody waves at them. I was in Colorado heading for Silverton. The highway was closed by a landslide. I was at a gas station trying figure a new route and there was also a BMW rider there doing the same thing. He went out of his way not to meet my eyes so he wouldn't have to say anything. Who knows maybe he was Germain and couldn't speak English. We were the only two bikes there.

Passing through Santa Fe, NM (Need Brake Job)
midnightventure replied to petekadish's topic in Watering Hole
If your in Durango you have to do the ride to Silverton. Its a shame you can't take the train. Its a great ride some of the best views. -
Just by coincidence I checked my Avon rear tire earlier tonight. It has 10000 miles on it. Ihave gotten anywhere from 6000 to 15000 miles from d404s depending on my riding style at the time. Right now I haven't been pushing or babying the tires. It is wore out and I will be replacing it this weekend. I am just posting so somebody thinking about buying will have one more experience to go by.

My original trunk lid got scratched. I started sanding on it with some 400 grit wet dry sandpaper and got it out. My black trunk lid was gray when I got done. I sprayed it with some clearcoat and it turned back to a nice glossy black. My replacement lid had just about the same damage and when I got through the scratch I was also through the paint. I think the repacement had been painted to match and the original was black all the way through although I'm not sure about that. You might be able to sand through the scratch and reclearcoat. If you can't you would have to fill and repaint.

I like northwest Arkansas. It is centrally located and has great scenery and motorcycle roads. Also very motorcycle friendly.

Originally posted by Black Owl And African lions too. Betcha never saw one of those either while running the loud pipes... We don't have to many African Lions around here, a few mountain lions but a lot of deer. We are close to the largest state park in MO. Personally I don't care for the loud pipes either. I was just stating my experience. What is a moderater doing stirring. I thought they where supposed to keep things calmed down.

I bought my Sportster with straight pipes on it. I didn't really like all the noise but the cows in the fields were sure looking at me as I came by so I'm betting the deer knew way ahead of time too. I sure didn't see many when I was riding it.

I have a 1995 Trans Am with the LT1. It gets 25 mpg on the highway at 70 mph but drops into the teens in city driving. It only has 28000 miles on it. I take it on vacations and once a week date nights. Except in the winter when it doesn't get driven much because of road salt. A friend has a Corvette with the same engine and gets 29 mpg but it is a lighter car, It has over 200000 miles on it. These cars have the potential for lasting a long time but in the wrong hands can be destroyed in short order.

There are different octane ratings (R+m)/2 of 86 or research octane of 91. The fuel around here goes by (R+M)/2 and 87 octane is fine. Look at page 3-11 of the owners manual. Mine runs fine and I can't tell the difference between the octanes. Save your money.
