  1. Yes, people are "too busy" to pay attention to their driving to watch out for... anything really. lets face it, ANYONE can get a drives license. the "undocumented immigrants" from mexico can go down to DMV and show them some/any form from mexico and get a drivers license???? they get in an accident, have no insurance, have no money, nothing can be done about it. I am looking at an 83 venture, the rider said a "kid" pulled out in front of him, running a stop sign and took off. someone chased the kid down,, calling the cops on the way and the ONLY THING THE KID GOT WAS A RUNNING THE STOP SIGN TICKET??? not fleeing an accident scene, causing an accident as kid SAID, "I didn't see him" the guy wants another motorcycle, but his wife.... understandably, said NO!!! following distance people, it is a BLOCK IN TOWN and a MILE ON THE HIGHWAY; look TWICE (read: 3x) at intersections before going, WAIT 2 seconds and LOOOOOOK both ways when the light turns GREEN as EVERYONE RUNS RED LIGHTS. if u find yourself running a PINK light... SOUND and RIDE THE HORN until u are through the light. get rid of that "party horn" on your bike and get REAL HORNS!!! even 2- $12 china/HK/ E bay snail horns are a DEFINATE improvement over the toy horns that bikes come with. AIR HORNS or FREEWAY BLASTERS (run through a relay with hot wire to the battery)??? wear SAFETY YELLOW/GREEN vest, ride to be seen, expect the unexpected, ride like we are invisible, cover the brake at intersections, Left turners are ... MURDER!!!. some 72 yr old did it here a month ago, he got a 32 year old 72yr old turned left in front of 32 yr old on bike. guy on bike was doing about 45 in a 35...but most people do... if they can get away with it. Seen HD rider with BLACK JACKET and a taillight the size of a $0.50 piece... in a town full of retirees? ok, its your life HD. and yes, most people DO NOT CARE/ TOO BUSY with... cell phone/kids/work/something on their mind/ cant drive/cannot see/old/cataracts.... talked to a guy who ran a bike shop, said his first accident was with someone that looked right at him...and pulled out in front of him anyway=broken leg. I looked up a statistics on motorbike accidents... they started going through the roof... about the time... cell phones became more affordable... the more affordable they came, the more people had them... the more the motorcycle accidents went UP, UP, UP. Coincidence? maybe? and then there are people that ... cant drive to begin with and get on a bike, don't take training class, don't read books, too immature to deal with a machine, drink, ride angry, ride above their skill levels.... my drivers license test at DMV was 25 multiple guess questions on the computer and ride the bike, literally, around the block. a few years ago, it was just answer the 25 questions on the computer, a person could read the...~3-4 pages of the DMV manual for motorcycles while waiting at DMV to do their Bizness and take the motorcycle test and ... get a motorcycle endorsement. that is not much for "motorcycle riding training" I drove truck for a while, I loved it when people would pass me on a divided 4 lane highway and after passing me would IMMEDIATELY pull back over into MY LANE 50' in front of me... it takes AT LEAST 600'+ to stop a BIG TRUCK at 60mph IF THE DRIVER IS PAYING ATTENTION AND EVERYTHING IS JUST RIGHT... we are the only 2 people on the road, why are u right next to me for more than 1 second to BLOW BY ME and get AT LEAST 200+++ feet ahead of me before pulling over back into "my lane?" Cruise control will forgive you if u override it by mashing down on the gas pedal and BLOW BY me and get WAY IN FRONT OF ME before pulling back over in front of me. Some/many truck drivers "cook the books" (only "supposed" to LEGALLY drive 10 hours a day; OH PLEASE, do that, wont have the job for more than a couple of months as trucking companies want/LOVE/EXPECT drivers to "RUN" (illegally/"cooking the books" Enron, MCI-WorldCom, AT&T-Worldnet...)... if that means 24 hours of driving, so be it, think about that the next time u are day gazing and taking 30 mins to pass a big truck/anyone on the highway, did that driver sleep last night... or the night before. I think "back in the day" they "RAN" 36 hours regularly, some probably still do) the shoe is on the other foot now. simple physics, something 80,000#'s hits something 4,500#'s...it is not going to be good, that is POTENTIAL ENERGY, KINETIC ENERGY (energy in motion) is... 3-4x that much energy? Energy in motion. Be safe out there. Happy Motoring, Exxon's Motto. #1 Corp in the US, WM #2 , but #1 Employer
  2. all the work (tires, new lower fork tubes, brakes, oil change... etc.,) was done like 2 weeks before the bike was laid down @ 30 mph; I don't think he HIT IT, but laid it down to keep from HITTING the car when the kid ran the stop sign and took off (and all he got was a running the stop sign ticket????). ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS!!!! could be ANYTHING and it has a COMPUTER in the dash!!! im sure it was a wonderful thing WHEN IT WAS NEW, but now??? I don't mind doing "little things" painting/replacing broken plastics, spiffying up a machine, but ELECTRICAL WORK on a NON RUNNING BIKE??? how do I know it shifts right? is second gear working? has it been fixed? second gear fix is ... have to take the motor out and split the case... that is a DEAL BREAKER TO ME. oh it is a (somewhat) "good deal" IF IT RAN and I could RUN it around the block/town for a while, run it through the gears, test the brakes, lights, electrical; but the way it is, not starting???? I saw someone somewhere (mechanic) stripped ALL the electrical stuff off a bike and just ran the BARE MINIMUM of wiring on a bike, there was lots of wires left over, he cleaned it up a lot, but he was a mechanic by trade so he had a clue. Im sure that bike WAS a fine bike in its day, too bad the PO's did not take care of it too well, what a shame/waste of a fine machine. I know, happens all the time. "its just a car/truck/motorcycle!" is what most people say, they don't understand, no point in trying to explain it to them.
  3. The kill switch on the handlebar has been by passed. it is in the desert, under a carport, moisture is not an issue in the desert ... for the most part; but it did come from "back east" where moisture is a problem (I see signs of rust on it, not bad rust, but there is NO RUST in the desert, except in the mountain areas where it snows and they use salt on the roads and mostly no one rides motorbikes in "winters" there, no real "winters" here...2-3 days it snows and sticks...sometimes on the roads.) The Electrical situation is "scary" to me, the buy in price is acceptable; but I have spent $$$$$ on other "cheap" buy in machines and ended up spending WAY TOO MUCH $$$$$ on something only to end up with something that is still only worth about what I paid for it ... or LESS. It is/could be a GOOD BIKE with work and SOME PARTS, but I have a hard time saying "when"...if it would just start/run well. it is just not getting juice to the plugs for some reason???? the wiring? the kick stand safety thing, the handlebar kill switch that has been by passed? it came from "back east" and was probably left out in the weather...some?
  4. Vehicles do the same thing when the rear end is "not right"... they WHINE. ESPECIALLY noticeable in a van or SUV with little soundproofing. it sounds like running MUD TIRES in the back and REALLY fills the cavern of a van or SUV with poor sound deadening and or little or no carpet (don't ask how I know). Poor folks, just change the gear oil to a thicker oil 90w-140 and STP oil treatment and run it... that will work to a point in a 4 wheeled vehicle...if the rear end locks up cuz the ring and pinion are in a bad way... well that is pretty bad, but not CATASTROPHIC... as it would be on a bike. rear end oil should be changed every 2 years or ...10,000 miles on ANY VEHICLE as... oil is cheap, new differentials are NOT CHEAP. the first thing I do when I get a "new" (to me) used vehicle is change ALL THE FLUIDS!!!! including the differentials, transfer case, transmission, power steering, brake fluid (if I can get the bleeders out if someone was smart enough to put grease/Teflon tape on the threads when they put them in last time). Semi synthetic gear oil at WM, if they have it, it goes pretty fast, is $5.50/qt (or so). takes... 45 mins to change it, get tarp to lay on, little thing to catch the 4.4 (or so) oz of old gear oil in a cup that fits in there. make SURE U CAN GET TO THE FILL PLUG AND GET IT OUT BEFORE U START AS NO GOOD IN DRAINING OUT THE OLD IF U CANNOT GET THE NEW IN.. .might have to jack the bike up a little bit to get to the fill plug. I OVERFILL mine just a little bit... just because... it overflows out the vent when it is cold (below 60) but that is ok. I KNOW IT IS FULL!!! Royal Purple 85-90 gear oil $10/qt???? just don't know if I can do that on an OLD BIKE?
  5. OH it cranked just fine, it just is NOT getting spark... kickstand? was told that it normally starts with kickstand down anyways? I mean the bike could be brought back, but... wiring problems???? I watched a U tube video about buying a used motorcycle, the guys said "if it has wiring issues, WALK AWAY FROM THE MOTORCYCLE!!! he seemed very emphatic about that. I can wire stereos/speakers/CB's and plug in computers, that is about as good as it gets for my wiring "expertise"
  6. 83 venture wont start Im looking at a 83 venture royale, it is good price, BUT it went down when some kid pulled out in front of rider (and took off and all he got was a running the stop sign ticket????). it comes with new plastics, new dash, the old dash reads 4x,xxx new dash is irrelevant. he said it has been to shop, new fork tubes (pitted) seals...etc, brakes, tires...$2k worth of work 2 years ago (carbs too). battery is dead, jumped it off the pick up and it cranked well, but NO SPARK?? had extra spark plug and cranked it, no spark. he said it started last weekend, but NOT TODAY. it has been out in the weather so it is are weathered, but he has all the replacement parts.. . fuse box is a mess, half the fuses are missing, but it was that way when it started last weekend? so... why no spark to the spark plugs? what can change in 4 days? where to start looking. he said he did not notice any gear whine or problems with 2nd gear??? I WANT TO BUY IT...but if it wont start. short answer please. pick ups??? where are they, are they accessible easily, are they the culprits, wires eaten by mice?
  7. Im looking at a 83 venture royale, it is "cheap" $700 BUT it went down when some kid pulled out in front of rider (and took off and all he got was a running the stop sign ticket????). it comes with new plastics, new dash, the old dash reads 45,xxx new dash is irrelevant. he said it has been to shop, new fork tubes (pitted) seals...etc, brakes, tires...$2000 worth of work 2 years ago (carbs too). battery is dead, jumped it off the pick up and it cranked well, but NO SPARK?? had extra spark plug stuck between panniers and frame we fished out and put plug wire on and against frame and cranked it, no spark. he said it started Saturday, but NOT TODAY. it has been out in the desert sun so the plastics are weathered BADLY, but he has all the replacement parts in 2 big moving boxes that we can get at HD....$500 worth of parts. he works in oilfields, hauls crude oil to refinery, they don't just let ANYONE DO THAT so they pay accordingly. fuse box is a mess, half the fuses are missing, but it was that way when it started last Saturday? so... why no spark to the spark plugs? what can change in 4 days? where to start looking. he said he did not notice any gear whine or problems with 2nd gear??? I WANT TO BUY IT...but if it wont start. short answer please. pick ups??? where are they, are they accessible easily, are they the culprits, wires eaten by mice?
