I'm not sure I get it. does dingy's ignetech and MAP sensor as delivered running off the #2 vacuum port work or is there a tach issue that requires the dwell to be set at auto, and an advance curve issue that requires the idle advance to be set to 7 degrees and tweeks elsewhere, and a then the 4 into 1 vacuum can and map voltages to be adjusted?? I thought this was a mature system to replace the TCI..
-
And gary, is my ignitech programed for auto dwell or need I do it like lonestarmedic? & is my advance curve same as the which lonestar feels he improved? My tci is dead now but when it was working I think my idle was better then I see now with your ignitech. And i dont recall it taking so long to warm up (for intake popping to stop. What should I do?
-
And then so Gary did you design your tps because of problems running with your map? Which one do you like better (& why). & does the ignitech have provisions to run map & tps inputs?? Oh and is the four into one vacume lines with canister really beneficial with the ignitech and map as compared to the stock tci with pressure sensor?
-
I thought the ignitech advanced with rpm (sense off pickup coils) & the vacuum input acts to retard it a tad temporarily if you get on the throttle hard which drops intake vacume until the engine "catches up" & you get some volume going through the intake.. my stock 83 xj has hall effect pickups and a electronic ignition.. no vacume sense. And the dynamic ignition in my old Honda also don't have vacume input. And why we're at this, cars have map, tps, & a mass airflow sensor.. so why/how could a tps be better than a vacume sensor??

Between 3-4000 rpm (by 2500rpm) shouldn't the ignition be "fully advanced" to the stock number? Or are the advancing more with change to fuel or compression? & gas mileage? I thought performance should be everything (& throw away pollution control). BTW what is your combination? I have a stock '84 xvz12d just installed Gray's ignetech

I bought my bike without a battery and she's almost ready for the road. I read that the deka battery is the best to replace the stock BTG-GM18Z-3A-S0.. can anyone say where I can buy one in person or get it shipped? I live in Kearny, NJ. and my stock battery had a battery probe (I don't know what that checks...). any issues with a sealed battery? what are the pros and cons.. to a stock style vs sealed battery? and otherwise, what is a good battery and a battery to avoid? without input, I'd be shopping at walmart/

I just got the ignetech from dingy and had no plans to do the coil over plug mod. ran it but haven't ridden it. seems a little rough on the idle and sluggish on revving. is there a known problem/improvement to his map sensor and standard advance curve? I just plugged it in and have not yet bought the serial programming port cable../

I need a TCI for my '84 XVZ12

hey Kevin, I'll check that VIN tomorrow and send you a PM. I just installed Dingy's Ignetech and she fired right up and ran pretty well. popping out intake until she was warm but even warm was still missing a little. one or both rear exhaust donuts are leaking so maybe that's a problem (all but #1 warmed up to 230F but #1 went to 260F and that's the one that's leaking most). My fan came one when she warmed but my temp gauge is no longer reading since I installed the 4 brush ebay starter. ideas on that? will be on the road when I get through the brakes.. Oh, and the clutch cylinder under the left engine cover had been leaking but I still have clutch and seems the leak stopped so I'll ride it real close to home and watch -
cranking voltage
garyS-NJ replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
thanks all. I don't have a battery in my bike. I've been running it off a car battery with jumper cables bringing the juice to the bike. It just dawned on me that I never tested the voltage right at the car battery and perhaps the jumpers are dropping the voltage. I took the transistors out of my TCI (today (after changing diodes and all the electrolytic caps) it was only firing one plug) so I couldn't test it again (I guess I could but didn't want to crank it without the TCI in place and besides I had to work on the roof and work on my other bike... ugh. -
cranking voltage
garyS-NJ replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I read about the TCI supply voltage going through the run/off handlebar switch (and that thing was intermittent once), but that still doesn't explain the starter bringing down the supply voltage.. Also, just to be sure I was getting good voltage to the TCI, I did measure it right at the TCI.. At the TCI and at the battery plus, and on the other sides of the fuses, I had the same loaded down 7+ volts while cranking. current going through a high resistance connection can drop a voltage.. oops, wait, I never measured it right at the battery, maybe my new jumper cables are dropping some voltage.. report back later... -
I'm resurrecting an '84 xvz12DL and know I have a bad TCI (replaced diodes and caps and ran a jumper...) but a friend came by with his TCI that he swore started his bike yesterday and his TCI wouldn't start my bike either.. It cranked fast enough but I could see the 12V gauge dropping down around 8V and I just got to thinking that my starter could be getting worse and worse (it has been horribly slow cranking (especially with hot starter) and loading down the supply since I bought the bike). Oh, yes, we were using the battery from his truck with a charger in parallel (switched to "50 amp start"). I had an ebay 4 brush starter that spun fine on the bench so I opened it up and it looked beautifully clean and the brushes looked new (about 1/2" long). commutator was clean so we buttoned it back up and installed (yes a bit of a pain but I got to flush my radiator). before hitting the start button, I cleaned the battery connection to the case near the water pump (thermostat?). well it spun the same but still loaded down the battery.. I verified it with a volt ohm meter and even jumped the solenoid.. still 7 + volts cranking and I have to think that is low for the ignition.. I think I'm loosing a volt through the ignition switch so I jumpered from the battery plus (the jumper cable to the ignition fuse and that didn't help because the actual battery is just getting loaded down by the bike.. Now mind you I bought this bike engine seized and I broke it free but it does idle fine (well it did until I reworked my TCI and lost spark on 2 or 3 cylinders) and it has been running on and off a whole bunch so I don't think the motor is gauled up to load down the starter... thoughts anyone? what does your volt gauge go to while cranking?? (and yes, I'll either fix this TCI or buy the Ignitech).

TechSpark Repair manual on CD

Maybe I need to verify my manual download from this site to get clear pics on my laptop.. as for searchable pdf, I think a good scan can be ocr'ed in acrobat and saved as pdf or word. -
I need a TCI for my '84 XVZ12

XVZ12TDK 1984 venture Royale.. what do you mean by M/N. And I was hoping I wouldn't need to go with the ignitek due to cost. believe it or not my venture is one of four ponies in the stable and was supposed to be a low dollar test ride for keep or flip. -

thanks again Kevin.. I read somewhere about using a 26H on a 1984// is this possible? -
