I usually order parts from motogrid.com or my local dealer. The last time I ordered from motogrid.com I also checket South Seattle and the items at South Seattle were a dollar or two cheaper but their shipping charges were much more. Counting shipping it was still cheaper to order from motogrid. DT

My wife and I got out today and rode about 180 miles. Had lunch with her sister and visited our niece. Atarted out a bit cool but warmed up soon. A great day. Below is our route. DT

Has anyone ever drained the tank completely to see how much it will hold without holes in the filler neck? If not, I'll try to do that in the next few days. I always assumed it would hold 6 gallons and when I went on reserve I still had 1.5 gallons or so left. Have I just been lucky so far? DT

What gas mileage do you get ?
Midrsv replied to greg_in_london's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On my '07 with 4000 miles I get 32-34 mpg with normal around the town and highway riding. If I am riding back roads at less than 60 mph I can push it up to the high 30's. Seems that my '04 did a little better. DT -
Thanks for starting this thread. I plan to order a Clearview this weekend and I'm trying to decide between the XL and XXL. I look through the windshield now so I'll have to look through either one of those. My question is, will the XXL provide significantly better wind protection for the passenger? DT

RSV Front Tire Size Recap
Midrsv replied to V7Goose's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks Goose, On my '04 I tried the smaller front tire (Avon) and found that it did improve my slow speed handling somewhat, I found that at highway speeds the bike did not feel as "sure footed" on surface transitions and grooved highways. On the next set of tires I went back to the stock size. My '07 has the Brickstones and I am trying to wait until May to put Avons on just before a big trip. I'm not sure I can wait another month. Ebay Saddle Bag Crash rails
Midrsv replied to Stratcat's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I really don't see them being much cheaper after shipping. $40 shipping brings them to $189 and www.motogrid.com has the rails for $182 with a more reasonable shipping charge. DT -
Sure was nice having a cooler (someone else's) along last year while riding through the desolate areas of Wyoming and Montana in 90 degree plus heat. DT

First Self Performed Maintenance

How about changing the rear differential oil? DT -
Eddie, I don't have a trailer for sale but if you find that you are interested in a Unigo I could show you mine. We're fairly close to each other. Dennis

Thanks, that sounds reasonable. DT

Bike Dead Need Help fast!
Midrsv replied to SaltyDawg's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Seems to me like Beer30 needs one of these awards I see attached to some people's name. Way to go Beer! Sure glad it wasn't something more serious. Dennis -
Just curious, I was in a dealership today and I saw a couple of Vmax on the floor and noticed the redline on the tach was around 9500 or 10000 rpm. I thought I had heard that the engines were very similar internally. What's inside a Vmax that enables it to rev 3000 more rpm? Or, is Yamaha just being real conservative with the 5 yr warranty? DT

I rode across the Going-to-the-Sun Highway last July with 6 other bikes. It was a great ride. There was quite a bit of traffic on the road but it didin't hinder our progress because we were going slow anyway to take in all of the scenery. While the Glacier area was beautiful, I liked riding Beartooth Pass even more. Attached are a few photos from our trip. DT

We did but that just makes it quieter and you can't hear the source. It never goes away completely even with the volume all the way down.
-
That seems to be about what I am getting on my '07 with about 4000 miles on it. I think my '04 with 40k on it did abut 5 mpg better. DT

Yes, it has the filter on the 12V positive and negative line. A friend told me that he had to put a capacitor in line on his XM radio on his Gold Wing to clear up some noise. Could that work here? Dennis
-
No it is definitely engine noise. It varies with the engine speed and comes through the aux input and CB. DT

I believe the antenna is from J&M. We haven't tried to tune it yet. We still got to find a meter. Dennis
-
Are the original plugs resistor type? If not, is there a resistor equivalent? Dennis

Has anyone successfully installed a J&M handlebar CB on their RSTD. I've been working with a friend and fellow member here to install one of the units on his Tour Deluxe. It was fairly easy to install but there is an incredible amount of engine noise in the system. To the point of being unusable. Initially we connected the power through a relay triggered by the aux accessory wire under the seat with the ground directly to the battery. After contacting J&M they suggested not to connect directly to the batter and to tie the positive lead into the tail light circuit and the ground wire directly to the frame. We did that also and it made a slight improvement but the noise is still very annoying. The SWR has not been set and J&M says to set that also. Woud the SWR have any effect on picking up engine noise? I am not a radio expert but that seems unlikely to me. I would be interested in others experiences with this system. Thanks, Dennis

Yes, the ride is still on. I'll be leaving on June 6 with 6 or 7 other bikes headed to meet up with our wives in Grand Junction on the 8th. From there we will do a loop through Moab, Monument Valley, Page, Zion, Bryce Canyon, and Capital Reef and returning to Grand Junction on the 14th. Dennis

I carry a Dell D520 or D630 laptop and just place it in one of the padded sleeves. Works fine in the trunk or if I have the Unigo with me it goes in there. Never had a problem. I'll probabaly supplement that with an I-phone once they come out with the 3G model. DT

Hey Brad, I've been thinking about a Meet-n-eat in Central KY sometime this spring. Would you come down for that? Dennis

I wear size 11.5 boots and I love the heel/toe shifter. I have tried shifting a few times as if I didn't have the heel part and found it too uncomfortable to lift the front shifter with my toe. With floor boards you don't have the peg to pivot your foot on. To me it feels very natural to lift my heel and upshift. When upshifing I just keep my foot on the floorboard with the heel adjacent to the rear peg and when the time comes to shift just raise my heel, pivot the foot about the ball of the foot and let the heel down. No problems. I have had my shoe lace catch on the front shift peg a few times. I've ridden my friends Gold Wings a few times and I hate the wing's shifter. To each his own... DT
