RSV Miles per Gallon, Speeds, and Odometer Errors
Midrsv replied to V7Goose's topic in Watering Hole
Good work Goose. On a recent 4050 mile trip to Utah I averaged 31.6 mpg using 128 gallons of gas. My maximum mileage for one tank was 41.8 mpg and the low tank was 22.9 mpg. This was based on a speedo-healed odometer. I've found that my speedometer and odometer were both off 7.5%. On this trip we were loaded fairly heavily and pulling a Unigo trailer. About 1100 miles of the trip was riding 2-up. My typical around town mileage is in the 32 to 34 range with an occaisional 38. DT -
Do you have a mic cable spliced into the system? If not, you'll need Buddyrich's cable and you an search here for several threads relating the Zumo and the cable. If you have the cable and it's not working I have no idea. DT

I like it Brad. Just imagine how it will look when you get the "safety chrome" on it. Dennis

Confused about BuddyRich Cable for Zumo
Midrsv replied to Maritimer's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
Beer30, I use Buddyrich's cable and the IC does not seem to have any effect on my phone operation. When riding alone I generally keep the IC off. However, the passenger can only listen to the conversation. The passenger mic does not pass through to the phone. I've heard others state that their passenger can speak. DT -
I would look at the tire first. I've found that as my tires wear and get to the last 3k miles of life or so they will start to wobble a bit when I release the grip on the bars. Everytime when I put a new tire on the front it's cured.

Eddy, sorry it has taken me so long to reply to you. I just found the note tonight. I guess the visitor messages was a feature of the board that I was not familiar with. I have begun to notice a few more KY members here and I have actually been thinking of hosting a meet and eat in the Lexington area sometime. We occaisionally ride through Winchester. However, it seems most of the time when we go for a day ride we tend to go south and west of Lexington. Although last weekend we went to Rabbit Hash on the Ohio river. We try to do one big trip each year and throw in a couple of overnight weekend trips. Over the last 4 years we've visited the Grand Canyon, Rocky Mtn National Park (Colorado), Mt. Rushmore and the SD black hills, Yellowstone and Glacier National parks and the most recent trip to Utah. We'll have to get together sometime.

After first reading about the Rabbit Hash General Store in the forum here a couple of months ago it has been on my list of places to visit. Today was the day. We left the Lexington, KY area around 10:00 this morning and made our way through Frankfort and up US127 and arrived at Rabbit Hash around noon. A very biker friendly destination. We had a lunch of burgers and hot dogs grilled outside with several 4-legged beggars around. We spent an hour or so there overlooking the Ohio river. There are some very nice roads in the area for riding and if you are in KY, OH or IN it is worth the a couple of hour ride to visit. Attached are a few photos. Dennis

I once was carrying a 5 lb can of sorgum mollasses (for my dad, I hate the stuff) in the trunk of my '04 and the can had a press on lid. I was parked outside of work and a fellow employee came in and told me there was some type of grease dripping out of my trunk. Apparently the heat had caused the lid to pop off and the goo was in the bottom of the trunk. What a pain to clean that stuff up. DT

The radio on my '07 had exactly the same problem. A couple of times a week all of the buttons except the volume would go dead for 10 to 15 minutes and then start working again. The dealer replaced the controller under warranty and I haven't had any more problems in the last month or so. DT

I just calculated my mileage from my recent trip to Utah and for the total of 4051 miles I averaged 31.6 mpg with a high tank of 41.8 and a low tank of 22.9. About 75% of the mileage was interstate riding with the cruise set at about 72. The interstate legs were riding solo and the rest were 2-up. All were towing my Unigo trailer. This mileage was calculated from my speedohealer corrected odometer and confirmed with my GPS mileage. Dennis

For clarification on the mileage I must add that I have a speedohealer to correct the speedometer/odometer error and the correction factor is about 7.5%. So for those of you calculating your mileage from the stock odometer and are getting in the mid 30's you can probably deduct about 7.5% from your mileage. That being said, I also had the speedohealer on my '04 and I did not see this poor of mileage. I do plan to ask the dealer about it the next time in. This bike from the start has always seemed to get 3 to 4 mpg less than the '04. The few tanks where I got in the 22 to 25 mpg range was when we were running across Kansas with brutal head winds, constant 35 to 40 mph headwinds. And for the 1450 mile trip out and back I wasn't riding 2-up. My wife flew out. This was my fourth year to go west. Been to the Grand Canyon, Utah, Rocky Mountain National Park, South Dakota, Yellowstone and Glacier. Time for a new direction now. I'm tired of riding across the KS, MO and NE. Dennis

I made it home this afternoon after a 4050 mile trip from KY to Utah, an incredible journey. We met up with our wives in Grand Junciton, CO and from there we went to Moab, Monument Valley, Lake Powell at Page, AZ, Zion National Park, Cedar Breaks National Monument, Bryce National Park and Capital Reef National Park. The parks are incredible and much to our surprise the ride to and from the parks were equally as incredible. The bike ran well but got really poor gas mileage. I only had 5 tanks about 30 mpg. Most were about 28 mpg with a low of 22. I was towing a small trailer (Unigo) and rode 2-up while on the loop through Utah. The Gold Wings with me did much better on gas. They would always use 1/2 to 1 gallon less than me on each fill up. Here are a few photos from the trip. Dennis

We've completed our second day of travels on the way to Utah. Myself and 6 other riders. We ran into a little rain just west of St. Louis yesterday. Just enough to put the suits on and then it stopped. After a stop in Blue Springs, MO last night we left early this morning and made it to Burlington, CO. The wind this morning and early afternoon was brutal. I had ridden in windy condition before, I thought, but they were just gentle breezes compared to today. It's odd to be following a bike pulling a trailer and seeing the trailer run straight with the pavement but the tow bike is angled into the wind about 5 degress. I was pushed out of my lane by the wind more than once. The last couple of hours the wind subsided and the temps dropped to about 80 and it was a very pleasant finish to the day. Tomorrow we'll make it to Grand Junction where we meet up with our wives. Dennis

I have the same problem with the wings. That's why I have a Venture. 3 of my friends are riding wings and they are all over 6'2 and they don't have the same problem as me. Their legs extend beyond the pegs easily. DT

Di-lectric didn't do it. Radio still possessed, help!
Midrsv replied to FutureVentures's topic in Watering Hole
It's been a while since I looked at mine, but I think there is a balance adjustment from front to rear. Could it be that is biased to the rear? Just checking the simple things first. DT- 13 replies

I had a Vstar 1100 before the RSV and found it to be a bit light for highway cruising. It mad a good town bike and was good for slow country road cruising but I found if tiring for anything over 200 miles. I would like to have a smaller bike for commuting and 1-up riding and I really like the Vstar 1300. If you can find a left over '07 you can get a real deal on one. There are some dealer incentives from Yamaha and my local dealer has a Silverado (windshield and bags) for $8500. DT

I think the Garmin XM receiver must have much better reception. I've ridden through some very dense forests and never lose reception. I've been through some fairly long tunnels without a signal loss. I do recall once riding along some tall stone walls and lost the signal momentarily. Prior to the Garmin unit I had a Roady XT and I did find that the reception was not as good with it. DT

I'll probably start another thread with updates (each evening) from the road. I'll have my laptop along with me. DT
-
Would have loved to be there but on that Saturday I should be passing though Kansas on my way to Grand Junction, CO and Utah. Maybe next year. Dennis

I have the Zumo with the XM adapter and it is great. GPS, XM and telephone are all integrated into a very easy to use control. The XM unit is a bit pricey, isn't everything related to bikes, but I think it is worth it. I also opted for the XM traffic and weather package. I like being able to see the forecast and wether data while I am on the road. DT

I too installed my Wagner grill this week. Great product. Attached are a couple of photos. DT

The RSTD mufflers are esentially the same as the RSV with the exception of the tips and the two threaded holes in the end of each muffler that the tips attach to. You need those threaded holes to add the tips. DT

I thought no-fault only applied to personal injury and not property damage. At least that's the way it is in KY. DT

Seems to me that the person (or their insurance) that rear-ended you should be taking care of the damages and not Progressive. I have also had good experience with Progressive. DT

Can you give me the route numbers for the Virgin River Chasm and Grand Staircase ride? Thanks, Dennis
