Anyone familiar with the San Jaun Scenic Byway in CO?
Midrsv replied to Midrsv's topic in Watering Hole
I checked out some of the Black Bear Pass videos. I don't think I could even walk up there much less jeep. I would lose my cookies riding with these guys... [nomedia= ] [/COLO"]YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.[/nomedia] -

Thanks for the input. I wish I didn't have to wait 9 months to leave. Dennis -
Anyone familiar with the San Jaun Scenic Byway in CO?

Thanks for the input. There are just too many roads in that area to ride. We only have about 6 days to ride while in the area and I'm trying to limit each day to about 175 to 200 miles in order to have time to look around. We plan to come into CO from the south through Santa Fe and then head back east through Denver. Our wives will likely fly into Albuquerque and we'll pick them up there and then drop them at Denver airport on our way back. So we're trying to plan the best 6 days between those two airports. I'm beginning to plan our big trip for next summer and we're planing to ride through Colorado again. Our plan is to ride from Santa Fe to Durango and on north the Rocky Mtn National Park. I need some advice on our route from Durango to Ridgeway. While I would like to make the complete loop of highways 550 and 145 but that would require backtracking. So my question is which route is the best ride if you can only go one way? Through Mesa Verde to 145 and on to 62 or just straight up 550? On the map 550 looks more interesting. Dennis

I know bigger is better, but would a 13 x 19 sheet work? I can print that on my photo printer. Maybe break it into 2 sheets. The paper for that runs about $1.75/sheet. I can do a test print if anyone wants to see it. Dennis

My 401k balance bottomed out about $100k from the peak about a year and half ago. It's back up a bit above that previous peak so that only means I've lost the 20% of my salary plus matching that I've contributed over the last year and a half. I'm not crying I know many who are still much worse off. DT

I don't think so. I zoomed the original file up and it looks like some type of oriental fat man face. Maybe a Sumo wrestler. Go figure! DT

I was driving along Ft. Myers beach in my truck this morning doing the speed limit and this biker zoomed past me (it wasn't a passing zone) and I noticed he was decked out in his biker attire even though it was about 92 degrees and felt like 110. He had a do-rag, leather vest, tatoos, boots, etc. He was idling along blipping the throttle to let everyone know he was there. I was thinking to myself "there is a real biker". Then I looked at the bike and I didn't recognize it from the rear. So I got closer and saw the name on the seat, a KYMCO 250. That made me smile. I can just imagine the ribbing he'll receive when he rolls up to the next biker bar. DT

I rode up to Daytona from Ft. Myers and back today. I was dissapointed in the vendors at the speedway. Seems like they only had half of what was there last year. I talked to the guys at Custom Dynamics while they were installing some LED turn signals for me an they said the vendor count was way down. There seemed to be more activity out by the Harley shop and JP Cycles. I won't do this marathon ride again to Daytona. 600 miles plus time at the speedway and JP cycles plus a cruise down main street. Dennis

Agreed, but I was dealing with the service side of the business and not sales. I doubt they sell many Ventures at this store. They seemed to be more into sport bikes and watercraft. DT

While trailering my bike to Ft. Myers I noticed when I was just south of Tampa that I noticed in the mirror that my passing lamp bar looked like it was about to fall off of the bike. I pulled over and checked and one of the mounting screw heads had fatigued and broken. So I wire tyed it to secure it until I could get to Ft. Myers. So great, now I get to hunt up a new bolt and hopefully I'll be able to get the old one out and replaced in the parking lot of the condo. As I neared Ft Myers I recalled that there was a Yamaha dealer just off I75. I called ahead and the service department was open on Saturday until 5:00. I stopped in and asked if they had a bolt. The service mgr found a bolt and gave it to me. I suggested that they install it, after al l've got this five year warranty. He said that if he did that he would have to write it up and there would be a $45 minimum charge. I said fine, send the bill to Yamaha. They must not sell many Ventures because he seemed surprised at the warranty. Anyway, he took my vin number and wrote up the work order. I left the bike with him and went on to store my trailer and about an hour later he called and said the bike was ready to go. They replace both mounting bolts. I was thankful that they were able to get it fixed so quickly. I wasn't looking forward to fixing it in the parking lot. DT

I like the Marriott (Courtyard, Fairfield, etc) beds and the Holiday Inn Express is also pretty good. DT

Second opinion on 26K service?
Midrsv replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
3.5 hours for a valve check/adjustment is much better than what my dealer charged which was 8 hours labor. DT -
Valerie and I made it home around noon today from the Southern Indiana weekend. Thanks to Joe (Freesyrider) and Donna for organizing the weekend. Although it was a bit cool yesterday we had a great time and met new and old friends and shared good food. What more could you ask for? Dennis

We're just getting ready to hit the road. We should make it to Corydon by 6:45 if we don't hit too much traffic through Louisville. Dennis

Hope the weather cooperates this weekend. Valerie and I plan to arrive at the Baymont in Corydon around 5:30 or 6:00 Friday evening. We hope to arrive in time for dinner. Dennis

Do you have the Yamaha Trunk Bag?
Midrsv replied to Freebird's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Don's right. It is just a big rain bonnet that fits over the entire bag. Mine stays stored in the small center pocket on the front (riders side) of the bag. The bag works great. Dennis -
Well I've been known trailer from ocaisionally. I do ride about 20,000 miles per year and my wife rides with me on most of the trips, be it to Utah, Montana, Colorado or wherever. However, because she tolerates my trips she gets a beach vacation as well and she wants to take the umberllas and floats and the kitchen sink. So in order for me to get some riding time in on those vacations I need to trailer and I'll be doing it again in a couple of weeks. So if anyone sees this poser going down I-75 next week, honk and wave. Dennis

For a retail customer you are probably being charged dimensional weight if your package actual weight doesn't meet the minimum weight per cubic foot. You could have shipped 53 lbs for the same rate. For a business customer who ships a lot the rate may be negotiated to actual weights. DT

Mark, Have a look at the Whelen strip-lites. They are more expensive but I think they are much brighter than other strips. I have one on my bike and I believe it has 96 LEDs and works as a run/stop light. They have models that can be set up for run/turn/stop lights. I have mine set up to provide a 4 flash burst followed by a solid brake light. There are a couple of photos of my mounting system on the old bike I had in this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29908&highlight=whelen And further down in the thread someone posted photos of the run/turn/stop model. The prices are all over the place so you need to search for the best price if you're interested. Below are a few links and there are many more if you search google. David, I don't know about Google Maps but I know you can do it with the Harley ride planner. http://www.harley-davidson.com/wcm/Content/Pages/Ride_Planner/Ride_Planner.jsp?locale=en_US This is the best online mapping site I've found. Just install the Garmin communicator software and then all you have to do is click on the GPS Synchronization button and the site does the rest. And it's free. You can also save the routes and have the site email the route to your riding partners. Dennis

Thanks for all of the input. That's what I was looking for. I feel a bit better about the purpose of the unit just not happy about the way it was purchased and I won't go into that here. I'll just say it was not purchased with grant money and the subdistrict that I live in is strapped with the entire note which is about $588,000. I and other residents feel that money could have been better spent on providing a couple of firefighters on duty full time utilizing the very good equipment they already have. The ladder truck is no doubt a very good piece of equipment but in this rural area that has a part time manned firehouse, if a fire breaks out in the off hours, after 8:00 pm someone (probably more than one person) has to make it to the firehouse and roll the truck for the call. I only live 1/2 mile from that firehouse and I would prefer that the firefighters already be there and roll immediately with the very good Freightliner engine that they currently have which is a 1200 gallon pumper. I just may have to seek a seat on the county Fire Board. Dennis

Scottt, thanks for the information. I am trying to learn more and be open minded. It's just that this is a volunteer fire department with limited financial resources and I am questioning if it is prudent to tie up so much capital in one apparatus that may have limited use. Could the funds have been better spent on two smaller trucks that could provide faster on scene response times? Please don't read this wrong, I fully support the fire fighters. They are fine group of guys that are very professional in their duties and they deserve the finest equipment to provide for their personal safety and to get the job done. I sometimes just question the wisdom of the fire board that controls the expenditures. Dennis

Thanks for the replies. This truck will be housed in an outlying area near some nice homes and the fire house is on the county line. There are no industrial complexes within the district. Those that are in the county fall within the city limits and are served by the city fire department. 90% of the area this truck serves is rural farm land which has small county roads with low hanging trees. In addition, probably 70% of the area does not have water hydrants. I'm no firefighter but to me this truck looks like an overkill for this district and in fact may be the wrong truck to pull out for most of the area if you can't get to the fire quickly. How many men will it take to pull that truck out of the firehouse? Dennis
