Pull my finger!!

Ok here goes.. My daughter has a full itinerary for us. Saturday the 18th is the day we are renting a bike and the plan is to take the highway to Whistler.. In Whistler we are going zip lining... (she thinks we are still in our 20s like her). Anyone want to come along or anything else I should see along the way..?? I believe the zip line is set for 1:30 ish... so if we leave early enough there might be time for some side trips or after the zip line maybe side trips.. not sure what is a must do and what isn't..

Long distance on a well maintained 1st gen is very easy. I live near Hamilton Ontario and have been to Arkansas for the International (5,000 Kms round trip) as well as Indiana last year which was not as far. Just for fun the Navigator and I do day trips of 700 to 800 Kms frequently. I would not hesitate to jump on Blondie and go pretty much anywhere. Just go... and have fun..

Missing 4th and 5th Gear

Just to get going is an easy fix. with the bike on the side stand you don't even have to drain the oil. Just take the clutch cover off. find the pin that is out and put it back in then bend the holder back into place. If you are carefull you may not even mess up the gasket on the clutch cover. The unit can be rotated by hand so with a little luck you won't have to remove the clutch. Now after saying that it is a good idea to eventually replace that shift mechanism with a newer version from a late model V-Max. The only real problem I had was getting the screw out of the middle that holds it on. It has loctite on it. -
I'm trying to talk Paul (Blue Giant) into coming this year and he is from your area. There are a number of us in Southern Ontario going that would be going through Niagara. You could stop by here on the way if you came this way. There are lots from WNY that are going as well so you could hook up with them.

If you are going to be in Ontario (southern) we have a couple of spare beds available..

The 660 comes with a Ram mount. It should clamp to the bars beside your air controller and be able to sit with the unit just above that. It would be easy to see and I think it would look like it belongs there. The only concern is the one that comes with it might not be quite long enough (but it looks pretty close). If that is the case all you would need is the longer bar.

AWESOME!!! Mighty Purdy!! Looking forward to seeing you soon...

Do a search for your "hosts" file and open it in notepad. At the bottom may be a list of sites. If the site you want is in the list it will be blocked. Delete that line and resave the file. -
Nice stalking Bob... ehtogo

Hey Ray: PRAYER WORKS!!! SHE'S ALIVE... So after some word experimentation and a lot of persuasion her engine is back together and in the frame. She started right up (on 2 cylinders at first). Now lots of smoke when she warms up but it's just burning off the oil left on everything. So almost all the rest of her body is together. Should be up for a test ride on Saturday. a big Thank You to everyone who helped but most of all to my friend Carl.... :cool10:YAHOO!!! -
Annie: the best price I found is here http://www.need4digital.com/product.asp?itemid=garzumo660 I just don't know this vendor. It is cheaper and has free shipping (to USA). Has anyone dealt with them before? On another note if you are planning on getting Aussie maps later and continuing to use the unit you can't go wrong with a 660. If it is just for this trip then it is way more money than you need to spend. (my opinion) I've had a few units now including a 785 and a 765. They did everything but were a little harder to get mounted on the bike. Had to go to GPS City and get ram mounts and stuff. Then had to jury rig to get it to play music through the system. Then they were not water proof and I couldn't read them in sunlight. They DID have all the features I wanted though. Now I have the 660 and could not be happier. I believe B2MOM has had a similar experience.. maybe she will chime in here.

We were thinking that as well. In this instance the gear has holes in one side for the dogs to go into so going in backwards is impossible for either of the two gears. The larger of the two gears goes on the shaft and butts up against a shoulder then a washer and spring lock. There is no spacer on the shoulder side. Then the second gear goes on the shaft and that one has the dogs so can only go one way. Then there is a bearing which also goes up against a shoulder and then the heavy spring which needs to be put in with a press so that the split washer can be inserted. So this long story just to say that the two gears that are touching are the only two in that section. The only way that the gear could be in the wrong place would be the whole shaft is in the wrong place. We can't see how that could be once the unit is assembled and put into the casing there is a large bearing that sits flush with the end of the casing and is held in place with a flat bracket and screws. -
Annie: I think you are on the right track. The 660 is an excellent unit. Unless you want XM radio it would be the way to go in my opinion. The screen is bright so you can read it in sunlight. It plays MP3s and does routes as well as having room for future map updates etc. I love the one I have and I think you would be very happy with that unit. It also comes with the cradle for the bike AND the cage.

So it is looking like the consensus is that the forks are bent and I have to agree with that. Dingy even sent me good ones. I should have changed them but the originals looked fine. So out comes the engine and a kick in the butt for not just changing the forks with known good ones... Thanks everyone for your input.. I will keep a close watch on stuff as it comes apart just in case it is something else. I'll keep you all posted on the results.. -

LOL I actually gave that a thought but not a wrench.. maybe a bolt or something but I think it would make the noise all the time and be even worse...(if you can get worse) -
Come on by and watch me.... After spending most of the winter taking on the 2nd gear issue and having lots of ups and downs we finally got the bike back together. Hooked it all up with exhaust etc.. Lots of help from folks on the site.. Like Dingy, Dano and Skydoc. Mostly Marcarl.. Anyhow it started right up BUT it makes an enormous racket while in neutral. Goes through the gears fine and quiet in every gear but in neutral it sounds like a metal playing card on bicycle spokes... Looking like I have to pull the motor again which is a BIG job for my limited skills and then chase down the problem and re-assemble. Down time with not riding is going to kill me... Anyhow does anyone have any suggestions as to what I did wrong? Wayne

Cold Blooded
Wizard765 replied to GolfVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If it sits for awhile it could be that it just needs to have the gas pumped up. If mine sits for any length of time I turn the key on and listen for the pump to stop then turn it off and back on again and listen for the pump again. I do this till it stops pumping. Once I'm sure the gas is pumped and the bowls are full it starts right away. My engine was out all winter and upside down on the bench. After a lot of expended energy we got it back together and once secure (not exhaust yet) did what I just said and it started right up. -
You could get a 2nd gen starter from eBay or Pinwall for around $50 and it bolts right in. They are 4 brush starters and solves the problem.
